Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Open Thread: Game 2, Milwaukee (1-0) at Pittsburgh (0-1)

First place!  Feels great, huh?

Doug Davis (0-0, 0.00) goes against Kip Wells (0-0, 0.00).  Jeff Cirillo will try to maintain his .667 batting average, and the Crew is leading by a couple runs through seven, we might get some hints as to who Yost will give the ball to in the late innings.

Game time is 12:35 in Pittsburgh and 11:35 CST.

I just noticed that the Brewers don't play their first night game until the 12th, and 9 of the first 11 are day games.  Probably doesn't mean anything, but seems a bit odd.

Not really on topic
I watch most of the Brewer games on Fox Sports, and many of Daron Sutton's mannerisms tend to get on my nerves during the game.  For example, his ostentatious refusal to say "Best Damn Sports Show Period."  I have no problem with his refusal to say the word, it just seems like he draws attention to the omission.  Also, I'm pretty sure you could base a drinking game on his repeated use of the world "absolutely."  All things considered, I think he's a decent play-by-play guy, but I do find some parts of the broadcast irritating.

Why am I rambling on about this?  I subscribe to the mlb.tv package, which allows me to watch all the MLB games via streaming video, and yesterday I watched the Cardinals game, among others.  I guess I never thought about it, but it makes sense that Joe Buck is the Cardinals' every day announcer.

I will watch today's Brewer game with a new appreciation for Daron Sutton, and a fervent hope that I never find myself in a situation when I have to listen to Joe Buck more than once a week.

I'll be listening
on the radio. This game will tell us more about the Brewers. Must say I don't mind the Brewers announcers all that much, although obviously there are better ones out there...

I enjoyed watching the Cubs lose last night

Branyan
from the Journal-Sentinel: "Yost confirmed that left-handed-hitting third baseman Russell Branyan will start today against Pittsburgh right-hander Kip Wells. Branyan will see most of the playing time against right-handers with Jeff Cirillo and Wes Helms vying for time against lefties."

Here's hoping Branyan hits 3 HR's to go along with his requisite 2 strikeouts. ;)

Miller
And Miller should be starting today, right?  Moeller should only be playing when he catches Sheets?

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 6, 2005 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah...
Damian Miller will be starting behind the plate...

I don't get the Journal Sentinel, and do all my reading online.  The last couple of times you've posted Yost quotes about the lineup, I haven't been able to find corresponding articles online.  Are you referring to articles in the newspaper itself, or am I just missing the articles online?

Online
here's the main entry link for Brewers coverage:

here's the link to the story I quoted from today (scroll down its at the bottom of the article)

Gotcha
It turns out that you're just a more dedicated reader than I am.  I can't make it more than a few paragraphs into those human interest stories.

Scan, scan, scan!
With online newspaper articles, it's all about the speed reading.

I agree, you see a typical baseball quote (Damian Miller said, "I'm really looking forward to the season, this is a great clubhouse here in Milwaukee") and it loses all possible interest.

Branyan! Lee!
gotta love it. 4 zip Brew Crew

by AJ on Apr 6, 2005 12:07 PM CDT reply actions

Beautiful.
So I guess Branyan isn't starting out slow.  (How's that for sample size?)

But Branyan batting BEHIND Damian Miller?

WTFF?

I guess I should loosen up about Cirillo and recognize that the best of all possible worlds is having these two guys battle all season, both put up career years, and always have a .300 hitter with at least doubles power on the bench.

(Then again, we already released somebody who fit THAT description...)

announcers
Marty,
I agree, Daron can be irritating, and that he's much better than most of the other options.  Some of the Braves announcing pairs are pretty good, but Daron Sutton is quite knowledgable (like his dad is) and doesn't spout the stupid stuff that some people (I'm not naming names, but one rhymes with Moe Jorgan) can't keep away from.  I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised I was when I first moved to WI and discovered the TV and radio teams...I'm a Brewers fan more for Uecker than anything else.

Spivey!!!!!!!
Spivey hits one out the park at the PRECISE moment that the mailman knocks on my door, delivering my new Brewers hat to me (cue Twilight Zone music!)

So do you think that was a retaliation pitch when Davis hit Wells, or what? I predict a Brewers-Pirates brawl sometime this season

Helms
Helms should be getting a bus ticket to anywhere pretty soon now.

Branyan...
hits his 2nd double of the game

so is Jeff the all-knowing Swami or what?

lets see if JJ can knock him in. (I know, I know, we didn't bring him up from AAA ball for his bat)

by AJ on Apr 6, 2005 1:19 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, Jeff is the all-knowing swami.
Thank you very much.

And it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that RB BB'd ... a walk is one of the "three true outcomes."  Then again, Branyan's a little heavy on the other two true outcomes :).

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 6, 2005 1:21 PM CDT reply actions

I just realized
that I forgot an option when listing the Brewers possibilities for signing catchers in the offseason.

It didn't occur to me that they could've bid for Benito Santiago...and handed him the starting job.

And thank G-d they didn't.  As I've said before and will say again...only the Pirates could be that stupid.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 6, 2005 1:27 PM CDT reply actions

And of course...
...as I type that, Benito gets a hit.

Sheesh.  Benito's got even less hope than Cirillo :).

And now, sadly, I must return to work, and I might not find out the results of the game until 11 tonight!  yuck.  work.

Final Score 10-2
a damn good start for the Brew Crew

here's hoping the bats stay hot in Wrigley

among other obvious attractions to the 1st Brewers-Cubs series of the season, Zambrano vs Sheets on Saturday should be a great matchup

by AJ on Apr 6, 2005 2:42 PM CDT reply actions

Sure looks promising
The only thing that concerned me today was middle relief.  It's tough for me to follow the radio when I'm at work, but it sure seemed like the hits were coming easier for Pittsburgh once Davis was pulled.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 6, 2005 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Apparently not
After looking at the box score, it looks like Obermueller acquitted himself pretty well.  An altogether solid game from the Brewers.
