Dodgers Disarm Brewers

The Dodgers appear to have done the Brewers a huge favor, signing Juan Pierre to a five-year, $45M deal.

"Easy there, Doug," I picture Ned Colletti saying. "Put down the center fielder. Think of all the people who'll miss you when you're gone."

So, if you're drinking tonight, have a toast for Ned Colletti, Inadvertent Brewers Savior--at least until Milwaukee signs Dave Roberts.

The funny thing
is that the money it would take to sign Roberts just went up.  Frightening.

One more time...
..let's hear it for Kenny Lofton (if we must sign a CF)!  His numbers genearlly beat Pierre's stats (especailly considering he had 230 fewere ABs) and  match up well to Roberts...and he can had much, much cheaper than either of them -- have you even heard Lofton involved in a signing rumor?  Forget his age -- he's the best bargain leadoff hitter around...

Lofton:    469 ABs, 79 runs, 3 HRs, 41 RBIs, 32 SBs, .301 avg, .361 OBP and .403 SLG

Pierre:    699 ABs, 87 runs, 3 HRs, 40 RBIs, 58 SBs,    .292 avg, .330 OBP & .387 SLG

Roberts: 499 ABS, 80 runs, 2 HRs, 44 RBIs, 49 SBs,    .293 avg, .360 OBP & .393 SLG

Lofton can only hit righties, so he's a natural to platoon with Clark.  Then we could drop Rickey in the order against righties and let Lofton leadoff.

Whatever happened to Ramser Correa???!

yeah
important if: IF we MUST sign a CF...

...but you're absolutely right.  He might be the best guy out there for 2007, even not taking the obscene amounts of cash into account.  And we certainly don't need a CF for '08, unless the brain trust has given up on TGjr.

Speaking of CFs
A number of teams have inquired about Astros CF Willy Taveras, but G.M. Tim Purpura isn't as willing to move him as he might have been in July. A 30-game hitting streak and a .308 batting average in the second half improved Taveras' status within the organization. "We like Willy," Purpura says. "We're not looking to move him. He's a pretty valuable commodity: a young center fielder with speed who can lead off." The Astros also are pleased with Taveras' decision to skip winter ball and attend the team's January minicamp in Houston.

OK, so TGJr isn't Willy Tavares (yet).  But their game is similar, and TG is pretty darn young.  I'd be supremely disappointed if we give up on Tony so quickly.

Actually, he might be
TG has a bit more power (as in, ANY POWER AT ALL), and according to my numbers, he was the 4th best CF in the minor leagues last year.  The whole minor leagues!  I seem to recall that Tavares is in the middle of the pack, fielding-wise.

Yeah
Chris Dial had him at +6/150 games. Juan Pierre was at +15, Brady Clark at -4. How does Nix come out using your PBP system, Jeff?

by battlekow on Nov 21, 2006 10:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nix
he didn't get all that many innings altogether.  Combined, he was -9 in about 430 CF innings, and +7 in 220 RF innings.

TG was +26 in 800+ innings.

And even more surprising, the second best corner outfielder in the minors last year: Drew Anderson.  Go figure.

lest we forget
if we really need to sign a centerfielder, i hear jeffrey hammonds had a good year in colorado once...

I'm sorry
But I'm going to have to ask Jeff to ban you for making such comments.  There's no place on BCB for Jeffrey Hammonds comments.  :)

I may be
...the only Brewer fan with a soft spot for Ole Stubby: at one of my first Brewer games, he hit a walk-off grand slam. It was only years later that I discovered, much to my surprise, that he sucked.
