Brew Crew Strat-o-matic Players

With the fantasy baseball league starting up, I was wondering if any of the other regulars on the site played Strat-o-Matic baseball, or any other simulation games.

I've been playing Strat for a few years, and I enjoy it so much it's pretty much caused me to quit fantasy baseball.

For those who aren't familiar with the game, it's a simulation game based on the previous year's MLB statistics.  Game play is like baseball, each team has a lineup, bench, pitchers, bullpen, etc.  A plate appearance is resolved via rolling 3 six-sided dice, and a 20-sided die for the advanced version of the game.  Those dice rolls refer to a specific outcome printed on either the card for the batter or the card for the pitcher.

The really cool part is that with that relatively simple game mechanic, player's end up with statistics that correspond very well to their performance in the season being modelled.

I had a SOM phase
and I mostly put together historical leagues and stuff.  My first major programming project was designing a draft-o-matic that was far superior to the strat program's.  I haven't played in a couple of years because all of my strat disks were 3.5" floppies, and I don't have one of those drives on my current laptop.

I do play Diamond Mind some, particularly using pre-season projections...I posted the results of a simulated opening day (Brewers won!), and as we get closer to the season I'll probably run more projections and post a lot more about those.

Strat Disks/Authorization
Strat went to an internet based authorization scheme about a year ago, and I think for some nominal fee, you can send your disks back in and get codes for authorization over the internet.

LONG TIME PLAYER!
Oh my, I've been playing since 1977, and while I stopped for awhile, I'm back into SOM big time with a number of computer leagues.  I love the replay leagues, and I'm in a few from the 20's through the 80's, and it is pretty cool.  Looking at Robin Yount's card in 1978 is pretty sweet.  I'm just about done with fantasy baseball, although I'm still in a couple leagues that have been around for 20 years, it isn't the same thrill as SOM.

Matt if you're interested I could hook you up with a few leagues, I don't know of any open teams, but I know we have a short wait list for those that open up.

Fantasy leagues around for 20 years?
That's incredible.  I knew rotisserie had been around for that long...but a continuously running league?  Amazing.

I wish I had gotten into strat earlier...I have a friend who has been playing since he was a kid (in the very beginning of SOM) and has all of those memories associated with the strat cards.  That seems so much cooler to me than my memories associated with a 1989 Topps Juan Berenguer :).

Strat Leagues
I'm in two leagues right now, a summer league and a winter league, and given my RL obligations, that's probably enough.

Thank you for the offer though.

Tis True...
Yeah we started our leagues in college, they were small leagues, of around six guys, but each year we kept doing it, and finally got to 10 in one league and 12 in another, one AL the other NL only.  One of the guys who was in my AL never won the league, but finished second a number of times, usually behind me.  The worst one was when he was in first place the entire year, and on the last game of the season, Tim Van Egmond started a game for the Brewers and got lit up like a x-mas tree.  He ended up pitching something like 1 1/3 IP, 8 ER and 12 hits & bb.  That line knocked my buddy out of first in ERA & Whip, and I won by a half a point.  Talk about a bitter pill for him!

cool
Tim Van Egmond = Glendon Rusch?  :)

That's great...I can imagine the rivalries run deep after decades of that!

very true
He was especially pleased when I sponsored Van Egmond's Baseball Reference page for a year in his name.  That might have been the best $5 I ever spent.

True Brew Speed
Best Strat Brewers team I ever saw was my buddy managing the 92 squad. Of course they had speed and more speed and some pitching as long as Bruce 2 minutes for Ruffin's card was nowhere around. He got them to 22-4 in his 26-game season with all teams and they rolled through the playoffs for a WS win. All he did was run and somehow that got it done. My personal favorite was the 2000 team. Jenkins and Burnitz had their career years with the Crew and the pitching was such that they got to the NLCS for me before losing to Arizona in 6 games. Again, with the short season anything is possible.
