Football's over! Open thread
For me, the best part of the Superbowl is that it means we're nearly to baseball season! Now that all this football nonsense is over (did the Packers win? ha) we can get down to business.
...but there's not much business today.
If you missed them, you may want to read up on my lists of interesting prospects here and here. The Brevard County Manatees (our Florida State League affiliate) have named their Manager, Ramon Aviles, who managed in West Virginia last season. And here's an interesting article about Tim Smith, a JC player who the Brewers drafted last year but haven't signed.
Also, check out the new poll to your right; you can use this thread to comment on it, if you want.

Some Nice Optimism
He's no Frank Bundy, thankfully...
This line...
WHY IS THAT THE CONSENSUS!!!???!!!
Look at the Braves rotation last year, or about half the teams that ever make it to the playoffs in the AL. You don't need to have four aces to get to the playoffs--you need one ace (check), a couple strong mid-rotation guys in the 2 and 3 slots (check, check), at least a league average guy #4 (check), and somebody who doesn't pull you down too far #5 (check). And really that last one doesn't matter.
Anybody who thinks Milwaukee doesn't have the pitching to contend either a) thinks every contender has Clemens/Pettitte/Oswalt up top, or b) has no fricking business writing about baseball because they don't know anything about the anonymous guys pitching for the Crew.
By the way, it's interesting you could link to this article and its full text...I followed a different link to it earlier today and it was insider only.

the thing is...
I mean don't get me wrong, there are reasons why the Brewers won't get to 90 wins. But barring multiple major injuries in the rotation and/or bullpen (or some big-time underachieving, yet to be seen under Maddux), on paper it doesn't look like it will be because of the pitching staff.
Melvin says it best
Until we reach the playoffs, we'll still be the same ol' Brewers in the minds of baseball fans around the world. And, to be fair, one .500 season won't be enough to change their minds.
finishing the quote...
"While the consensus is that Milwaukee lacks the pitching to contend, that discounts Melvin's ability to find arms and pitching coach Mike Maddux's ability to work wonders with them."
Exactly... so let's hope the Melvin to Maddux magic works again. Man I haven't been this excited for a baseball season in a while.
