It's Official? Yosted For Another Year

According to ESPN.com, Brewers manager Doug Melvin has announced that Ned Yost will be back for next season, although it is unclear what his future with the organization holds after that.

---------------------------------------
"I'm not prepared to make a change with Ned at this point. But again, the bar is raised for all of us. I don't take anything for granted," Melvin said Wednesday.
---------------------------------------

I'm not really sure what Melvin means by all of that (sounds like a lack of confidence in Yosty though), but it looks like everyone's "favorite" manager will be back next year.  Sorry for the bad news all.  Derrick Turnbow better be getting ready to get put in mid-8th inning some more so he can give up 3 runs...oh and they also talk about how they are going to make an "aggressive" move to keep Cordero, and how they want to acquire guys through the trade market that will draw more walks.  I would also think you might like someone who could hit...but walks are nice too.

Well....at least the Cubs lost.

Eh
I really really would have been surprised if they made a change.  And besides, in the non-BCB world (if such a place exists), he "led" them to 83 wins, the most successful campaign we've had in a long time.

I think Moustache is smart enough to know that the window for a club like ours isn't open for very long, not with free agency looming on the horizon.  I'd venture to say that when he says "But again, the bar is raised for all of us," he means it.  If we're not competing in September, I assume that'll be it for Nedgar.

Besides, we get www.firenedyost.com for another year.  As far as we know, that's Marty's sole source of income.  Without it, he's eating packets of secret stadium sauce for dinner.

In quasi-defense of Yost
I looked at the Brewers stats for the season, and I noticed that the club finished with a record identical to their Pythagorean method.  One measure of manager effectiveness I've seen tossed around is the comparison of record to Pythag record.  And by this measure, it seems that while Ned didn't get us any wins, he didn't screw us out of wins either.

So, here's a question for those out here:  How do you get Ned Yost to improve at his job?  If you're Doug Melvin, do you get him a SABR book for the Winter Holiday of choice?  Do you tell him to hire an extra bench coach, who specializes in bullpen management and gameday decisions?  What can you do?

by Matt L on Oct 4, 2007 8:20 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You could argue...
that Ned cost us runs by messing with the Menchkins platoon and other lineup decisions and then allowed extra runs because of his poor bullpen management.

Hm
It would be interesting to see just how much leaving the wrong half of the platoon in to face a reliever from say the fifth inning on impacts a team over a season. As I pointed out in the Menchkins recap, except for the eight Dillonino games, the left fielders at least started against starters they were supposed to.

This could be a fun topic
I say you goad him in the first inning of each game to get himself thrown out.

(I'm pretty sure the books don't work --- he's allegedly already read them LAST offseason.)

Well, and Attanasio
I'm sure he bought into the argument that this team was probably going to win in the mid-80's number of games and the fact they started off hot doesn't mean much since streaks happen. So I suppose the goal should be to convince him that playing badly happened because of Ned, not because of "that's how baseball goes."

If that was truly "epic."  If it were trult epic, it would have broken the Internet tubes.

I think it was more "epic-y."

I mean, they could have fired him and gone hard after a Dusty Baker or Davey Lopes type.

Maybe this is wishful thinking...
... but does the "at this point" comment and the "bar is raised for all of us" comment suggest to you that Ned might have a short hook next year?  Like, maybe Melvin won't necessarily wait for September to pull the plug if things aren't going as well as he expects?

I don't know.  Melvin's comments aren't exactly a ringing endorsement (though there were others he made that were more positive).  It may be true that Melvin fired a warning shot or two over Ned's bow in the post-season dinner.

In any event, it was the Ned is learning too comment that Melvin made (recorded elsewher) that got my blood boiling.  Screw that.  We shouldn't waste one second of what appears to now be a 3 year window (and it may be shorter than that) while Ned learns how to manage a team in a pennant race.  That's complete crap.

Brewers rack disaprin !!
If I were Doug Melvin and Mark Anastasia (or whatever), then I would have ash-canned Nedley.   He's a good manager, but too much a Phil Garner type and Bobby Cox wannabe.

If it were me, I'd hire somebody like a Bud Black who truly knows pitching.  Because the Brewers will go as far as their pitching can take them given the envious core of outstanding young positional players.  Orel Hershisher would be a dynamite fit as manager.

Offseason moves?

  1.  Dump Johnny Estrada
  2.  Try to move Bill Hall in trade
  3.  Work on Ryan Braun's ability to play 3rd base and Rickie Week's ability to play 2nd base
  4.  Lock Ben Sheets inside a hyperbolic chamber until spring training
  5.  Wave bye bye to Cordero and Linebrink because they will both break your heart in 2008 when they are signed to mega $$$ deals
  6.  Keep the faith.  My Cubs aren't that good.  The NL Central will be there for the taking.

I hate agreeing with Cubs fans
but you'll find a lot of support on here for everything you wrote.

We don't have a Joe Mauer waiting in the wings, and Damian Miller sure seemed to wear down when he was playing everyday.  Although he might be the least popular Brewers regular, but we might need Estrada.

I still like Bill Hall, but I've seen more than one opinion that he should be traded.  In theory, the return for him could help the team.

Sheets could hurt himself with a box of Kleenex.  Still, he's our best pitcher.  I wonder what we'll do with him after 2008.

I think we're going to try to re-sign CoCo in earnest, though that's probably a mistake.  Still, considering how awful our bullpen had been, there's some logic to trying to re-sign one of our few good relief guys.

Resign Coco?
I agree they will try to resign him, but it will be like Carlos Lee, he will get a decent offer from the Brewers but a megadeal from the Mets or someone...and he won't refuse!

I don't mind, he did give us a fine service while we had him... was the Carlos Lee trade a good one? I think so, just Coco's saves the past season plus was worth it.

Rack Disaprin???
OK, so this was bothering me long enough.

WTF is "Rack Disaprin?"  I did the obligatory Google search and it appears to be some type of computer geek speak because most of the hits involved either Halo or cats saying things with funny spellings.

Somebody help me out?
