Iguchi, really?

Here's something I hadn't considered.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/11/brewers-padres.html

I haven't really put much thought into this yet, but I 'd like to know people's thoughts on this.  I doubt we'll sign the guy, but if we did, where would he play,  As the article points out, there are basically two options:

A.)  He plays 3B, moving Braun to the OF, or
B.)  We play him at 2B and move Weeks to CF

The thought of Iguchi on out team is intriguing, but I feel like there are better options out there.  I'd rather see the money spent on good bullpen help or a true LFer.  (How about a home town discount, Geoff Jenkins?)  Maybe he's part of the package that will bring Carl Crawford to town.

Re:
Well, I highly doubt the Rays would want Iguchi.  They're already wondering how to make space for Evan Longoria and Reid Brignac.

There was also some rumbling about the Braves pursuing Bill Hall, which means we could shift Weeks to CF, but I'd much rather have Hall/Weeks in CF/2B than Weeks/Iguchi.

I think the main thing Melvin is doing is exploring all possible options, and even if stuff like this doesn't really make sense in the end, at least he's willing to be creative.  In the end, we just have to hope that he sees things like this are unnecessary.

I've been thinking about Jenkins lately.  I didn't want him for $9mm, and I'm not sure if I'd give him a two year deal now for like $15mm (which is what he'll get somewhere), but Joe Sheehan reminds us that, if used properly, Jenkins was a pretty darn good platooner.

Then again, I've been clamoring for them to give Gross a chance, and as it stands right now, he'll probably get it.

"If used properly"
Those three words pretty much sum up why the 2007 Brewers, with the talent and injuries they had, missed the playoffs (IMHO).

Can't trade Iguchi that fast
If you sign a free agent, you can't trade him until June 15 according to the CBA.

Well, actually, here's the relevant passage (Article XX, Section B, Paragraph 6, Sub-paragraph a):

(a) Any Club signing a contract after the expiration of the election period with a Player under this Section B may not assign his contract until after the next June 15. However, notwithstanding the foregoing, such contract may be assigned for other Player contracts and/or cash consideration of $50,000 or less prior to the next June 16 if the Player gives written consent to such transaction.

All that out of the way, if they sign him it should strictly be to play third base. Since he hasn't played third in the majors before, you have to wonder how good he'd be there defensively. At this point, I think anyone outside the organization they consider to play third needs to be pretty good defensively. Finally, like baumann said, I think it's good Melvin is looking outside the box.

I really like Iguchi
but I don't love moving Weeks.  If there's some understanding that Weeks could play decent OF though, then Iguchi would be a better option than most of the free agent LF candidates.  He's incredibly consistent (which is something the Brewers need), a decent fielder/hitter, and as that article points out, he might come cheaper because of the focus on Castillo/others.

What about
Moving Weeks to 3B?  With the way he's overthrown  Prince from 2B, maybe 3B would be better for his arm? He's got the quickness.

I just don't see how you'd want to make another guy learn CF. It took Billy half the season to look comfortable out there.

But.
If Rickie's troubles involve making throws, why would you move him to a position that requires him to learn a new throw, arguably a more complicated one, at 3B?  He has the arm strength, sure, but I'm not sure how productive it would be.  Aside from moving Braun to an OF corner, I don't really like shifting people around anymore.  With that in mind, the only players I'd be interested in on the free agent market anymore is Mike Lowell.

But, Melvin could get creative and surprise us.
