Riske business

David Riske, the veteran relief pitcher who compiled a 2.45 ERA in 65 games for the Kansas City Royals last season, is on the verge of agreeing to a multiyear deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to a club source.

My bold prediction is 3 years, $13 million.

If it were my baseball team, I'd appoint Riske co-closer along with Turnbow, unless some really good offer came along in which we could get a young-ish closer. As it is, I'd bet Melvin will keep looking for a trade for someone like Chad Cordero, which would make the bullpen surprisingly strong, moving D-Bow potentially as far back as the 7th inning.

Also, I'd like to make this the official David Riske pun thread. I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs to get a bunch of really bad jokes out of my system.

Trade?

I keep hearing Brian Fuentes might be a trade target. It might be easier to deal with Colorado than with Washington, too, right? Fuentes kind of has a (Coco) Cordero-y history, too, being a closer that was removed after a bad couple of weeks.

Here's my (bad) pun: This signing could signify the start of A bRiske Winter. :)

He's a setup man

Setup men almost never get saves (being removed for a closer), so looking as saves per opportunity for them isn't telling.

Four years seems to be the going rate

And I bet Moustache is feeling enough pressure (or is looking at the remaining unsigned FA relievers) to go for the fourth year. I guess we'll see!

Maybe not four years, after all

According to Tom H, both sides have seemed to settle on a three-year deal.

It appears the sides have focused on a three-year deal. I just talked to Riske's agent, Nez Balelo, who agreed with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin that the sides are closing in on an agreement.

So that's some good news, if it's true.

that Linebrink is making close to $5 mil a season.

$13 million is a good guess. Maybe $14 mil.

Solid Move

This would make me very happy! Think of it this way- even if we pay $4M per year that is an $9M per years savings over Coco...which can be spent on another gamble in the bullpen or to pick up salary in a trade for an OF. If this happens...in Melvin we trust.

I liked Riske back in Cleveland. He's a good pitcher. If it's something like 3/12-14, i'll be okay with it. It's a little much, but he's one of the better guys out there.

I thought from the beginning that it might be a better idea to see what it would take to get Chad Cordero than to look at a lot of these free agents. As Jeff said, that's not to say Melvin might not still do something like that, though it might take someone like Parra or Villy.
