rolen to brewers

Remember this was peter gammons on XM today.Peter has a tendancy to make some things up in the past. He said Scott Rolen is heading to the brewers. Would/Could make sense with pay structure, he wouldn't be a huge contract since he's been hurt. Braun has said he'd go to the outfield if needed. PLUS, what a slap in the face to tony larussa if Rolen came to milwaukee. With the past problems they've had.

I hope not
I hope Mr. Twenty Dollar Bill is making it up.
  • If we move Braun to left, where are we putting LaPorta?  I'm still clinging to the idea that they have a plan that looks beyond five minutes from now.
  • I think Rolen has $36 million left on his contract over the next 3 years.  That's a lot of cash for a guy who best years were 10 years ago, and who has been getting hurt a lot the past few seasons.  There's no way he's going to live up to that.
  • I'm leery as to what we're going to give the Cardinals for Rolen too.  Something tells me it'd be more along the lines of Sheets than Aquino.

not sure of age
What is the timeframe for LaPorta? isn't he still two. If the cardinals want to move him that bad maybe they'll eat some of the amount plus not expect much back. I'd just hate to see a deal and move braun to left. Then turn around and have Rolen get hurt and then who plays third. It's a gamble either way or either that or gammons had some ink left in the last pen in the box and he wanted to open the new box and needed something to write about.

LaPorta
I'm betting we'll see him sometime in 2009.

I guess this is one way around the lack of impact FA leftfielders (who aren't indicted, I mean).  Still, whenever you sign a monster contract like Rolen's, in the back of your mind, you're looking for a sucker team to pawn off the player to at the contract's end, when he's just about done being useful.  I'd hate to see the Brewers be the sucker.

OK, I'm hijacking this thread
While I rant about the idea of Rolen playing here, that is one thing you can give credit to Moustache for: we don't have a lot of backloaded, bloated contracts to aging veterans (like $36 million to Rolen).  Our worst offenders were the contracts for Sheets and Jinxie, and they were pretty tolerable compared to, say, Rolen's.

Of course, I'd be singing a different tune if El Caballo or CoCo had accepted Moustache's offers, which were far higher than I was comfortable with, but as far as salary goes, we're pretty albatross-free.

part of me...
wouldn't mind having rolen, but at a very reduced cost, and i just feel this would have disaster written all over it. i think just too many things could go wrong here (who we give up, can rolen stay healthy, braun play in lf...)

HOLY
Hey RogueJim great post on the stats. Hey did you see his first year errors when he came up with the phillies?  24 errors and then the second year it was down to 14. Interesting............

Sound like someone you know? :)
I saw him play for the Phils dozens of times --- he'd still probably be in Philadelphia if they didn't hire Larry Bowa as manager.

Funny how now he's considered the king of defensive third basemen.  Ryan, there's hope!

The details of such a deal could make it ok, but I'm leery of this one.

Say, do you think Moustache ever yanks the chains of the other GMs?  Like casually check on the availability of Henry Blanco, and ask if they're interested in Prince Fielder?  That could be really funny.

Rolen
I'm leery of this trade, too, but it's less about his contract than his health. He can still hit if he's healthy (see 2006) and I doubt they'd make the trade if he's still hurt. I also can't imagine Melvin would make the deal without the Cardinals picking up a lot of the salary, though, so I'm sure he won't cost the $12 million per year he's still owed. I'd guess one of the longer-term cost-controlled pitchers (Bush? Vargas?) would be headed to St. Louis rather than Sheets.

As for blocking LaPorta, I say worry about that when he's ready to make the jump to the majors. There's still plenty of time until that day. It'd be nice if he wasn't blocked in 2009, but you can't not upgrade positions now for only that reason.

Cappy to the Cards?
Seems like they're interested.  A Cappy for Anthony Reyes swap supposedly is rumored.

Maybe the conversations with the Cardinals have shifted away from Rolen?

I think Reyes has great potential and would definitely be a cheaper option than Capuano.

by thetoddmon on Nov 30, 2007 2:53 PM CST reply actions

that would be so weird...
to have cappy on the cards; and coco on the reds.

and have kendall from the cubs...

isnt it weird that we are bigger fans (more loyal) of the brewers than the actual brewers are. i know its a business; but it still seems weird to me.

Unfortunately we don't have any players bad enough to fit on the Pirates.
Weird, but not weird.

by Jeff Sackmann on Nov 30, 2007 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

Huh?
What would be the purpose of a Capuano/Reyes trade?    I thought at first that Anthony Reyes was a reliever (thinking of Al Reyes), but then remembered he's perhaps the only starter who had a worse year than Capuano last year.  I guess it's a salary dump, but why trade a decent starter who had a terrible year for just a terrible starter?

by stevie ray Braun on Nov 30, 2007 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

Reyes is younger...
and only a year or so removed from semi-prospect status.  Without looking up the numbers, I think he had a really good half-season in 06.

Basically, we'd be getting 3 or 4 years of control of Reyes for 1 year of control of Capuano.  Just winging it, sans research, I suspect I'd do that deal, and that the Brewers would win, if not in '08.

Weird, but not weird.

by Jeff Sackmann on Nov 30, 2007 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

Could be
I don't really know anything about Reyes except his stats, but as a 13th round pick with a career ERA of 5.42 and 2-14 record last year, it still seems mighty risky.

I've seen it previously reported
that the Cardinals refuse to eat any of his salary and want someone awfully good in return.  Sounds like a terrible move to me, we need pitching not another injury-prone, aging star.

Then again, recent quotes from Melvin seem to indicate that Mench is as good as gone.  We might need another position player, because I don't think many people would crack a grin with The Grynn in left field.

Rolen update
Also per the JS Blogs (of which I'm a big fan), Moustache doesn't seem to be playing the fool:
As for those who have mentioned that Peter Gammons said Milwaukee is still "a likely destination" for St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen, not if the Cards insist on dumping his entire contract. At $36 million over three years, he doesn't fit the Brewers' budget, and they certainly wouldn't want to give up much in return.

all this rolen talks proves one thing:
the brewers don't trust braun at third and would like to upgrade.

that's assuming of course that the rumors are true.

Peter Gammons is a hall-of-famer.  At 66 years of age he's still travelling to baseball games in foreign countries and working 16-hr days for baseball tonight.  I'm willing to believe that when he reports something he has more basis for telling the truth than you do for disputing him.  How many GMs did you call to fact-check your flaming post?  That was classless.

Melvin denies anything brewing
According to Tom H:
The rumors that the Brewers will acquire St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen continue to spread but general manager Doug Melvin told me today he has nothing imminent with the Cardinals.

In fact, Melvin said he hadn't talked to the Cards for a couple of weeks. That doesn't mean the trade won't happen at some point, however.

Everyone knows unfounded rumors never happen, so someone must be lying. ;)

seems pretty clear doesn't it?
:)

I hope he's right, because it'd be cool to have a "source" near to this blog. This is the one to be right about too because it makes absolutely no sense to trade for scott rolen.

I hope he's wrong, because I don't like the trade. Rolen has to bounce back all the way to justify the contract, so there is little potential for "value." Banking on an aging player coming off surgery to bounce back to pre-surgery form is a riske, riske gamble. Not really Melvin's style. It also means moving braun to the OF, which i think means Marty McSuperfly stops being a brewer fan.

And that's bad for all of us.

IF he is healthy it would be pretty cool to add his defense and leadership.

i have to say; i didn't think this would be a move we were going to make; i guess we will see if it actually happens.

on a personal note, RJ: im gonna go ahead and put tom brady on the bench tonight in our fantasy football matchup to save him for the playoffs. holmgren's hammys already have this week in the bag. :)

interest...
Could this be that Rolen wants to come to the Brewers (or is at least talking with friends about the possibility) but the managements have yet to decide if they want to make this trade (and if the Cards would eat any salary)?

by oaklandbrewerfan on Dec 3, 2007 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see the Rolen deal happening
Melvin has made it clear that he hasn't even talked to the Cardinals in weeks, and that moving Braun is a last resort.

This deal seems ridiculous, and the kind of big-name signing Melvin's been avoiding.

by stevie ray Braun on Dec 3, 2007 2:24 PM CST reply actions

Me neither
UNLESS the Brewer management has reason to think that Braun won't improve at third, reasons that they're keeping to themselves.

Meanwhile
The Cardinal blog is all a-twitter (ha!) over a Rolen/Cappy trade.  They seem to be envisioning Rolen/Reyes for Cappy/Hall, which doesn't seem very likely, if you ask me.

It did get me thinking, though: if we're so concerned about Ryan's defense at third, then move Hall back to third.  I mean, if you hammer it long enough, you can eventually fit the square peg that is Bill Hall in the round hole of centerfield, but if you have a square hole at third base...

by roguejim on Dec 3, 2007 2:34 PM CST reply actions

Maybe I was wrong
Hardicourt's reports from the winter meetings make it sound like the deal is coming along.

I'm still not too jazzed about it, but I guess if the Cardinals eat some of the money and we don't give up anybody too spectacular, I would be happy to have a healthy Rolen, in theory.

Scratch that
Nevermind, I still wouldn't be happy with this deal.  Rolen is overpriced and overrated, and moving Braun spells disaster.  He will improve at 3B, let's not mess with his mojo and lose his offense somehow by making him learn LF.

It sounds like the Crew is meeting with the Cards again today. Sure sounds to me like this deal is going to happen.

Maybe the real reason we want him is Yost is pushing for a Card insider that can give him all of La Russa's soft spots for that La Russa vs. Yost UFC 87 battle they are planning after last seasons incident.
