Quick note on Estrada

According to metsblog.com, the Mets offered Johnny along with Lastings Milledge in today's trade with the Nats.  The Nats DECLINED.  It sounds like the Metropolitans are just going to release Estrada.

Ahahahahahahahahahahah!

hmmm
So, is the joke on them...or us?  I mean, are we laughing at them for trading us Mota for a guy that they are going to non-tender, or are they laughing at us for trading them a guy that they can just non-tender while we take on Mota and his salary?

Now, I think that Mota for one year is a decent gamble, but I'm just sayin' there's two sides to this coin.

I don't know about shooting down,
I was just suggesting that the Mets may be fairly pleased with themselves over this too.

The really interesting thing, to me, will be to see where Estrada goes if the Mets do give him the 'ol heave-ho (and how much he gets in years and dollars).

I'm really interested in Mota.
At least he can throw semi-hard

I got your back, G!
Mota has had some success in the not-too-distant past.    (It looks like after the trade from Cleveland to the Mets in 2006, he was lights-out, though that wasn't the case in 2007.)  We owe him $3.2 million in 2008,  which seems kind of reasonable given today's reliever market.

Worse case scenario, we traded someone we don't want for someone who may just be a mop up reliever.  More likely, though, we traded for a guy who, though perhaps not dominant, will be a useful addition to our pen, one that most teams would like to have. I imagine New York fans are slow to forgive, but I think they'll regret giving Mota up for so little.

Agreed
Plus it's only a one-year commitment. If he's only as good as, say, Chris Spurling, then he's overpaid and easily let go in the offseason, but if he ends up about the same as Scott Linebrink was last year, he's underpaid in this market and we got a steal.

better still
...and Mota signs a big contract after 2008 with some other team --- like the Mets (!) --- and we get a first round pick for him.  :)

Oh hellsgnaw
Mota has got to be better than Spurling.  I can't imagine him being equal to or worse than him.
