Wise designated for assignment

Courtesy of the JS Blogs.  You know it's a bad omen when they give your jersey number to someone else while you're still on the team.

The Brewers have 10 days to trade him or release him.

Best of luck, Matt.

I wonder, though
Wouldn't we have gotten more in a trade if we did so before DFAing him?

Also, given the Mota trade, I think Moustache et al. think that Mota has a higher upside than Matt, recent numbers notwithstanding.  I wonder if Wise is really done --- I hope that's not the case.

Maybe, but they were out of time.
I'm not sure how much interest he would have drawn anyway after his meltdown last year.

I dunno
He's been pretty good for the last few years, and if his head is on right (a big if), he could be as good as many of the relievers we just brought in.

I bet there'll be a half-dozen teams looking at him.    Even if it's just selling him for cash, I'd hate to think we're going to let him go and get nothing in return.  (Mench?  Sure.  But Wise...)

I'm not saying I don't like him.
He was pretty solid for a few years.  I don't doubt he'll draw interest when he's free and I'm sure he'll end up pitching somewhere, probably in the National League.  But I doubt there was any kind of trade market for him.

I suppose you're right
Just the same, a nice American League team would be a fine destination.

Wise
Wise has been a very valuable part of our bullpen in the last few years, and he's a great guy.  I hope he has great luck wherever he goes next.

It would be a shame to not get anything in a trade for him.  Hopefully Melvin is able to work out something...Hank Blalock anyone?

Based on how he ended the year
Who would trade for him?  He was a basket case after hitting that Reds Player in the face.

Also If I was a rival GM who actually wanted Wise I know the Brewers are up against it with the 40 man roster I just bide my time and wait till the Crew DFA's him than make my move. Its not like there will be 10 teams trying to sign him.

Matt was a great guy but he could not find the plate at the end of the season I am glad the Brewers are moving on.

I went back and reread some of my posts at the WSB from the last two Septembers same song in both years bull pen meltdown I am very happy that they are really making major changes in the Pen.

My God Yost is coming back the 2008 season is already a disaster and they have not thrown a pitch yet. ;)

well said

For a fan
of the Brewers you see to absolutely loathe the people who play for them.  It's ok to be disgusted with a performance of a player, like Estrada last year, but you seem to take their poor performances personally. I don't get it.

I don't loathe everyone
That's a mighty overstatement.
  • Estrada sucks.
  • Wise sucks.
  • Our 2007 bullpen sucked outside of Shouse & Cordero.
  • I'll get rid of Sheets because he's got the injury bug.
And Yost Blows.

I still like everyone else, including Hall, Counsel (for defense), Gross (though not as a starter), Hart, JJ, Prince, Braun, duh, and I like Tony G.

So, tell me, where's this about not liking all the players on the team?

Wise
Best of luck to the only guy in Brewer history to have multiple seasons with a 1.000 batting average.

Weird roster technicality
Apparently the team just DFA'd Wise and Mench to open the roster spot before non-tendering them tomorrow. So I guess that means there won't be any trades.

Interesting move
Wise will definitely attract interest.  I give Doug Melvin credit for re-making that bullpen, but picking up two guys whose names will be on the Mitchell Report (Gagne, Moto) is very curious.   Prediction....Solomon Torres and Dave Riske are saviors in that pen in 2008.   At least they didn't give Gagne more than one year.

I'm not trying to be an instigator, but the imperative for the Brewers has got to be to improve that defense.  Good pitching and defense go hand in hand, and right now the Brewers are God awful defensively in too many spots.  I'm dead serious when I say that I'd move Rickie Weeks to center, Ryan Braun to left, Billy Hall to 2nd and go out and trade for a 3rd baseman like Joe Crede.   The Brewers would wind up a much better ballclub as a result.

could you please
post this same exact comment 8 times in other threads. oh wait a second......

also, do you have some sort of source lisiting who is going to be named on his report, or are these just your random speculations.

Like last time
Not saying you're wrong, but how do you know Gagne will show up in the Mitchell Report? Can I use you as a source for that?

You dont improve defense
just by flipping the infield and outfield.  Weeks is a much better 2B than Hall and Braun will improve drastically either way, in 3B or in LF.
You heard it here first: Prince Fielder will hit more homeruns than Eric Gagne's ERA x 100.

Wise
Maybe lost in the shuffle is the fact that Wise almost never was used on back-to-back days. That might not be his fault but if Yost wasn't going to use him like that unless he absolutely had to, then not having him on the team makes sure we have a seven man bullpen every game instead of a six man bullpen on days after he pitched.

I'm sure he'll catch on somewhere since he'll be a relatively cheap experienced reliever.

Sorry to see Wise go
hopefully he can bounce-back from his issues at the end of last season.  At least his release will be productive though, I'm excited to see all three of Riske, Torres, and Gagne in Brewers uniforms.

I'll miss ya
Matty. Whoever picks him up is getting a steal.  I see why this is being done, but it makes me sad, and I'm not sure it is solid reasoning.  I hope he bounces back big time.  One bad half in three years...

Avoiding arbitration
Looks like Aquino and Son of Clung avoided arby, so say the JS Blogs.  Munson and Rivera also signed one-year deals.

Who's left?  Funny you asked.

The Brewers have five players remaining in arbitration -- right-handers Dave Bush and Claudio Vargas, shortstop J.J. Hardy, and left-handers Brian Shouse and Chris Capuano.

I liked him
I hope he ends up on a team (ideally not in the central).
