Brewers sign Luis Vizcaino

Rotoworld:

The Brewers and Luis Vizcaino have reportedly agreed to terms on a two-year, $7 million contract.

So much for Ken Rosenthal's report that he was deciding between the Rockies and Pirates. This is probably about as good of a bullpen bargain as a team is going to get this winter, though it does leave the Brewers with a ridiculous six relievers making at least $3 million (Eric Gagne, David Riske, Derrick Turnbow, Guillermo Mora and Salomon Torres). Lefty specialist Brian Shouse figures to get the other spot, so pitchers like Claudio Vargas, Carlos Villanueva and Manny Parra won't be on the team if they fail to claim rotation spots.

Confirmed???
Seems like there is some confusion on what teams were really involved.  Let's see what really shakes out here before we anyone get too crazy.

There are some pretty interesting Brewers related comments on this Yankees blog.

you're being too nice
there's a lot of...let's see...uneducated people there. :)

my favorite: Meanwhile, what are the Brewers thinking???

Just like the O's recent past. Signing middle relievers to high-dollar contracts when the rest of their team's construction needs work.

Hmmm...
Anyone wonder if worries about the whole Gagne situation and the Mitchell report drove management to make a last minute run a Luis?

Also, I'm always for bringing back the former crew members if they still have some juice left in the tank, and a switch back to the N.L. should helps his numbers bounce back a bit.

Finally, I wonder how many of these guys the 'stache has offered a chance at the closers role?

Hm
The post also called him Jose Vizcaino, but I wouldn't be surprised if both that and the rumor he was headed to Milwaukee were just weird screw-ups. Far more interesting is the fact the Orioles apparently claimed Greg Aquino off waivers a couple days after the Brewers signed him to avoid arbitration. It seems weird to sign a guy to a contract and then put him on waivers right away unless the team needed a 40-man roster spot right away. Then again, can you put a guy you've only offered arbitration to on waivers without designating him for assignment?

He is going to Colorado
per WFAN and MLBtraderumors.com.  Signing him wouldn't seem to make much sense for us.

Rotoworld's update
The Journal News has changed its report and no longer says the Brewers and Luis Vizcaino have agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract.

That's what we get for trusting a beat reporter who covers another team. Peter Abraham says two years, $7 million is still the right amount, but he's signing with another NL team, "likely Colorado." He probably picked that up from WFAN, which is saying a deal with the Rockies is in place.

weird...
i'm a little surprised that the Brewers weren't in on Vizcaino earlier ...he's probably better than Mota and comparable to Torres, and not too much worse than Riske ... in other words, he's exactly what we were looking for, but maybe he wasn't interested in coming back, or somebody in the f.o. doesn't like him that much.

but yeah, good thing we didn't just add ANOTHER $3MM+ reliever.

Weird, but not weird.

This just tells me...
'Stache is going to make a trade for a 3B or LF.

The way I see it (and I'd do it) is either:
Package Cappy, Bush, or Vargas in a package for a mid-to-high grade player at 3B or LF.
or
Trade Sheets and maybe one of the above to get a high grade player... Like the rumor of Seattle. They need SPs. I'll take Clement and that young OF of theirs.
or
Hold for a while and watch the SPs market dry up and wait for the desperate come calling.

Either way, we free up a chunk of money for us in '08 to pay for the Pen and get us something to fill that hole in the order.

Thoughts?
