Breaking news: Dana Eveland traded

Eveland, of course, is the centerpiece of the deal between Arizona and Oakland, but several other players are involved:

Dan Haren is being traded to Arizona for Carlos Gonzalez, pitchers Brett Anderson, Greg Smith and Dana Eveland, outfielder Aaron Cunningham and first baseman Chris Carter.

In all seriousness, I'm not at all sure that's a good deal for Oakland. I expected them to do better dealing Haren to Cinci or Cleveland. Gonzalez is a top-tier prospect with (I believe) All-Star potential, but I expected something a little bigger in the rest of the deal, especially given the very reasonable contract Haren is signed to--a little over $16MM total for the next three years.

it's a good thing Pence is already in the majors..

or he would've been traded too! I've never seen a mediocre system gutted so quickly.

I don't understand why Oakland would trade a good, young pitcher who is locked up for 3 more years? Can anybody enlighten me?

Greg Smith, a command and control lefty, comes in at No. 13 for me, after Javier Herrera but before Jerry Blevins, while Dana Eveland is no longer eligible for prospect rankings, though he's seemingly always eligible for a seat at the buffet table; when you're David Wells, being fat is kind of cool, but when you're 25 and have yet to establish yourself in the big leagues, it's kind of annoying.
