can someone explain this to me?

OK, The Brewers talked to the cardinals about Scott Rolen. One thing the brewers do is hit well. They score runs and hit for power. Yes Ryan Braun isn't very good defensively at third. But why would the brewers think about this deal. Or any consider doing this. Rolen adds, average which we're ok with. He adds power which we're ok with. Why would we spend $33 million on an often injuried third baseman. We need pitching, as does every other team. If Braun is so bad, after only one season, why would we add salary. If they don't think braun can play third move him to left field. I'm ok with that. Then move Hall to third. He can play infield, its' been proven. Then fill in the outfield spot. We have a few candidates to do that. The result, we still hit good. We just shuffled players around. Best part is we didn't Add any $$$$. Hall can probably field better than braun. I don't see any reason to add Rolen. Now take that money and go out and pick up another couple arms. Last i read the Rolen deal is dead. But some feel the others will drop and they cardinals will come crying to us.

Hall
The Brewers want to give Billy a steady position, but I think that's the wrong approach.  Maybe his slump had something to do with center, but more likely he regressed to the mean. An outside possibility is that he was simply less focused/driven once he had a regular spot. In any case, I think Billy is a respectable starter, but what makes him valuable is his versatility.  Why take his best asset away from him?

talks with the dodgers
those are exciting.  any one of Ethier, Kemp, LaRoche, Billingsley, Broxton would be a nice addition.  Whoever came up with the Sheets & Hall for Kemp & Ethier, I like the way they think.

My big questions is, why do the Brewers feel like they have to win it all in 2008?  All of our core players are young enough that we're not talking about a 1-2 year window here.  It's more like 4-5.  Braun and Prince aren't even in their primes yet!  A trade like the one above would likely give us a pretty sick OF in 2009-201?.  The infield is set.  We could be dominant.  If what to do with LaPorta becomes a problem, so much the better.  Deal Ethier at that point for some bullpen help or whatever we need.

Likewise, if Bill Bavasi really not that enamored of Adam Jones and Jeff Clement, we should be interested in both.  The M's have asked about Sheets, right?  Why is Melvin wasting his time with guys like Rolen and Crede (btw, I never realized just how bad Crede's OBP numbers are.  what a joke).

I do agree with keephopealive, though.  Billy never seemed to be affected by moving around, and a lot of his value is wrapped up in being able to move him around.

Rolen/Crede
I'm sure their defense plays a big role in why their names have been dropped as possibilities (ditto Pedro Feliz) even though they can't hit. Given how much people have ripped on the team defense, it makes sense they'd explore options to upgrade it.

Not Going to Lie
Looking at that makes me salivate over the young talent we have control over, most of them beyond 2010. I think it's going to take a real genius (Yost?) to mess up the opportunity the crew is going to have in the next few years.

I think I'm going to bookmark that page to cheer me up when someone does something stupid.

I don't really want Rolen either
But I just wanted to again point out that the pitching was good last year, the fielding was terrible.  Even worse, Jenkins was, by far, our best defender last year and he is gone.  Rolen is not just a good defender but an excellent one.  This year he was the second best 3rd baseman according to RZR and that was his worst year in the past four.  In a vacuum, Rolen would help this team.  His health, his age, and his contract though make me not really want to trade for him.
