Brewers in talks for Gagne?

This in from Jon Heyman on CNNSI.com at short while ago, sure hope it turns out to only be a rumor.  Too many opportunities for Gagne to explode at the wrong time.

"The Brewers and Astros are among teams bidding for Eric Gagne, who has to be a closer wherever he goes (he was almost perfect as a closer in Texas last year, then perfectly awful as a setup man in Boston). Perhaps he could return to Texas, too, where he thrived."

why not
I know he was awful in Boston, but some guys just can't play there.  (Look at Edgar Rentaria)  Of course, it would all depend on the money he got, but I'd like to see it.  If he could pitch like he did in Texas last year, we'd have a pretty solid 8-9 with Riske and Gagne.  Again, it'd come down to the price, but I'm for it.

one reason not to
is that he'll get a contract for way more than he is worth. after shredding his arm a popular opinion was that his career was over.

there is a decent chance that seth mcclung has the same year next year as gagne.

players like gagne (and to a lesser degree guillermo mota) should be relegated to the less risk-adverse teams.

i think he's worth the gamble
i'd also be willing to bet seth mcclung does not have a better season than gagne.

of course, gagne would come with risks, which is why i don't think any gagne signing could really be evaluated until we saw some dollar figures.  however, based on talent and potential, i like the possibility and like the fact that there's talk.  wouldn't want to commit too much for him, but the general consesus seems too be that he'll get overpaid by somebody.  I'm not so sure that he will.

The problem with Gagne though
is that he's not a risk like signing a normally stellar player who just had an off year.  He had major injuries to his arm, and the safe bet is that he never returns to form.

I think he's worth
a one or two year deal.

He won't ever return to form because his arm strength isn't there any more.

But, as he showed in the first half of last season with Texas, he has developed a Hoffman-esque changeup that is slow enough that makes his fastball actually look like it's still fast.

He's definitely an injury risk, but I think his troubles pitching in Boston were probable more mental (adjusting to the town/pressure/setup role) rather than physical.

by thetoddmon on Dec 6, 2007 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

But he's going to be asking a fortune
and is thus not worth one or two weeks.  Mental problems don't make you pitch as mediocre as he did, and besides, he used to be a Cy Young-winning closer in Los Angeles, I don't see how being an 8th inning guy in Boston would add pressure or mess with his head.

However, in LA
he was most likely on steroids, and I hear that they can give you a big head (ba dum bum).

Maybe he's a little more sensitive now.

there's a chance
that he's only looking for a 1 year deal somewhere, hoping to put together a full year like he started to in Texas and cash in elsewhere in '09.  if that's the case, i'd be fine with slightly overpaying him if he'll only be on our books for 1 year.

i dont think he takes
anything less than 3 years, and somebody will give it to him.

prediction: 3/15

If 3/15...
it'll be massively incentive-laden, with a possibility to get somewhere like 3/30+.  His deal last year (going from memory here) was $6MM guaranteed, with incentives up to $10MM.  He'd be MUCH better taking that (and he could get it again, I'm sure, probably from Milwaukee) than to do $3/15.
Weird, but not weird.

where's Eddie?
Has anything become of Eddie Guardardo?  I always thought he would be the most intriguing closer possibility, but other than some talk here a few weeks ago, I've heard nothing about him.  Is he not available?  Are we not interested?

Deal
One year, 10 million pending physical. How does that sound Brewer fans?

by BroadwayJoe22 on Dec 8, 2007 12:10 PM CST reply actions

That sounds promising
The "pending physical" conditional part. The rest has me most distressed.

no chance
absolutely absurd to do 1/10 for both parties.

i'll believe it only long after i've seen it.

why?
it's probably roughly what he would get in arb, it's more than he got last year, and it's with one of the few remaining contenders where he is basically guaranteed a chance to close ... easy enough, if he's healthy, to rack up 40-45 saves and get Coco's deal next season.

I don't see who'd be offering much more.

Weird, but not weird.

because
What is he gagne's "true talent level"?
