Five Fun Facts about Elmer Dessens
Here is 5 quick fun facts about the newest Brewer:
- Dessens has pitched in three different professional leagues, MLB, the Mexican League and he also spent one year in Japan (1999).
- Elmer has posted exactly one winning season in his 10 years in the major leagues (11-5 in 2000). In fact he ended that year on a pretty good run: 6-1, 2.85 ERA in 47 IP covering his last 7 games.
- The last game of that run in 2000 was the last game ever in County Stadium where Dessens was the starter and winner for Cincinnati: 9 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB that day.
- Dessens has pitched more innings against the Brewers (111 IP) than any other club over his career. He is 8-6 with a 3.57 era against the Crew.
- There is only one other person who has played in the major leagues with "Elmer" as part of his name since 1965. The other is James Elmer Ganter who had a pretty good career with the Brewers.

Melvin strategy
Now we know Doug Melvin's strategy: find guys who are effective against Milwaukee! Suppan, Vargas (in a couple outings, anyway), now Dessens... next offseason, that'll be the first thing I check with potential free agent acquisitions.
