Game Thread #3: The Brooms Are Out

It's NLCS MVP Jeff Suppan versus non-NLCS non-MVP Jason Schmidt.  It's an odd matchup for this early in the season: Schmidt is clearly the Dodgers best or second-best starter, though he lines up at #3; while Suppan might only be the Brewers fourth-best starter, behind Sheets, Capuano, and Bush.

Regardless of who ought to be pitching game #3, I like our chances.  (Ok, I admit, I always like our chances, especially now that we have more than two good players on the team.)  Here's my series preview from Monday.

While you're waiting for the game to start, here are a few things worth checking out:

Unfortunately I've got a gig in a couple of hours, so I'm going to miss most of the game, but feel free to hang out here and chat about Suppan's shutout-in-progress.  If someone is inclined to post the lineup once it's announced, that'd be great, too.

Go Brewers!

Update [2007-4-4 19:34:56 by battlekow]: Ugh. Jinxie & the Head (great band name) are both starting, and Hart's riding the pine. It's only the third game!

Ouch
Good thing Jeff's not around to see this.  Whatever's Ned's problem with Hart is, it's definitely alive and well.

Ned's problem with Hart...
is Dusty Baker disease, just like letting Neifi Perez soak up outs over just about anybody else on their roster.  At least the Head is no Neifi Perez...

Speaking of weird outfields...
The Diamondbacks today started Eric Byrnes in CF and Alberto Callaspo in RF (!!!), leaving Chris Young on the bench.

Yikes
I sure hope Suppan brought his A game.  Schmidt looks really tough early.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 4, 2007 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

Schmidt
Even though we went 1-2-3 Schmidt was having trouble keeping his fastball in the upper 80's.  If that keeps up I think we should be able to score a few runs today.

by dixieflatline on Apr 4, 2007 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

Kinda watching in LA...
The game is on TV here; but I don't get channel 42.  It comes in kinda like an old black and white television; but snow-ier (no audio).  So, I'm rocking my Uecker via the internet (he is like 60 seconds behind my snow scene)...

Hope we can score some runs for THE SOUP!

This is a brilliant move.  The team has been playing poorly and needs a shake up.

Time to get in some gamers and some grinders, plus, Mench just turns outs into outs.

Mench, Counsell, Suppan in the next inning isn't the prettiest sight.

Although, it could be Villanueva if Suppan doesn't straighten up and fly right.

Nice inning there.  If Suppan keeps pitching well, it's going to delay my stem cell jokes.

Jenkins a choker?
I know the idea of a "clutch hitter" is pretty controversial, but I would like to see some statistics about Jenkins' batting in pressure situations.  My own non-scientific observation is that he Ks in the most crucial times.  It's beyond just being streaky.  He's played so long, but still doesn't seem to approach at bats like a veteran.

by keephopealive on Apr 4, 2007 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

clutch
Nope, Jenkins pretty much hits like shit all the time, you only remember the key at bats.
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 4, 2007 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions

hard evidence
Thanks for the laugh.  Unfortunately, it's official, scientifically speaking Jenkins chokes more in crucial situations:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/bsplit.cgi?n1=jenkige01&year=00

He's strikes out 1 out of 3 ab's late in close games, and he bats just .256.

by keephopealive on Apr 4, 2007 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually...
Dan Fox has Jenkins as the most clutch hitter in baseball last year, adding 3+ wins over what would have been expected given his rate stats and the situations he batted in.

by battlekow on Apr 4, 2007 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually
According to that:

Overall: 1002K in 3987AB, roughly 25%

Late & Close: 250K in 930AB, roughly 26%

Not really a big difference there.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 4, 2007 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

oops
You're right.  I was looking at thet 2 out RISP row for the strikeouts...

by keephopealive on Apr 4, 2007 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Off the cuff
Without looking at the actual numbers...

Jenkins strikes out at a fairly high rate in all situations, so I would expect him to strike out at a high rate in key situations as a matter of course.

However, the Brewers only have 3 hits in this game, and Jenkins has one of them, so I won't grab my pitchfork yet.

Wow
Ned Yost is getting an F for managing.  Nevermind that Jenkins got a hit, you have to pinch hit Corey Hart there.  And WTF is with leaving Counsell in also?  Bill says "it's too early to bring in Graffanino"; well, maybe it wouldn't be IF WE HAD ANOTHER INFIELDER.

by battlekow on Apr 4, 2007 9:13 PM CDT reply actions

Speaking of bad managing
It looked like Grady Little was engaging Neddy in a cripple fight there, leaving Beimel in to face Mench.

He ignored jacob's advice to pull Suppan.  I think jacob will be proved right on this one.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 4, 2007 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Suppan's stuff is nasty today.  Zero non-pitcher strikeouts bodes well for getting out of this one.

by battlekow on Apr 4, 2007 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

hrm, yeah
I guess the only way to enjoy the game is to challenge himself.  Maybe by loading the bases with one out.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 4, 2007 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Ned are you awake?
No pinch hitter there?  Counsell can't hit lefties, so maybe you should bring in hart.  Sure they go with Sanez but I'd much rather see that than Counsell up there.

by dixieflatline on Apr 4, 2007 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

To be truthful
Counsell should have been pinch-hit for before the game began.  As has been pointed out many times previously, Graffanino is simply the superior hitter, regardless of the pitcher's handedness.

Graffy's got an inch on Counsell.

by battlekow on Apr 4, 2007 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions

hey how bout that
We'll be second guessing Ned all year.  Nice play by councell.  We are just going to have to face facts that Ned is a bad manager.  Remember how long it took him to play Hall regularly last year?  He's just not a good lineup maker, or an in game decision maker.

by hyattff2003 on Apr 4, 2007 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

Well gee
He was saving Hart to pinch hit for Suppan.  Surprised he didn't go with Tony "Thunder" Gwynn there.

by battlekow on Apr 4, 2007 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yes, we will
The fun thing is to predict his foolishness, and be the first on record.  For example, Suppan never should have gone back out there, but we all knew Ned was going to stick with him.  Thanks to blind stupid luck, he actually got away with it.

So yeah, Ned's a bad manager, and we spend much of the games cataloging it :)

Oh well, 2-1 just keep it up!

by epo on Apr 4, 2007 10:34 PM CDT reply actions

absolutely disgusting
This one goes entirely on Ned Yost.  Show me a team in this day and age that puts in its fifth best reliever in the eighth inning down one game with everyone basically fresh and a day off tomorrow and I'll show you a bad, bad baseball team.  The Brewers aren't a bad baseball team, but Ned Yost subscribes to the Major League (the movie) idea of managing "I've got a hunch he's due."  Unfortunately, this isn't the movies.

There is NO EXCUSE for bringing in Carlos Villanueva in that situation with Wise and Turnbow out there fresh.  None.

And it cost us this game.

I hate Ned as a manager.  I just wish there was someone better out there.  My theory:  Ned just isn't very smart.

by Bill @ Brew Crew Ball on Apr 4, 2007 10:35 PM CDT reply actions

Actually.
Your reasoning is exactly right.  BUT--nearly every team in baseball does stupid sh*t like go with a bad reliever in a one-run game...if they're trailing.  It's as if bullpens are football teams consisting of offense and defense, and you can only put in certain players at certain times.

It's very odd, and while Ned might be among the worst at it, he certainly isn't alone.  Heck, I'm impressed by Grady Little that we saw Broxton in yesterday's close game when LA was trailing, and more impressed that he brought in Saito to get five outs.

Logical thinking and bullpen management do not mix in the 21st century.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 4, 2007 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

The fact that everyone does it...
makes it that much more frustrating. It would be such an easy advantage to grab! Just don't be a moron!
