Around SBN: Newcastle Battle Injury Woes Ahead of Tottenham

Poor Tomo Ohka

I remember before the season when some people (maybe not here, but on sportsline's message boards) were bad mouthing the Crew for not resigning Ohka on the cheap instead of paying big money for Suppan.  Well, Ohka wasn't good enough for the Blue Jays now either, as he was released after going 2-5 with a 5.79 ERA in 10 starts.  All I can remember Ohka for was the day that he switched batting sides for the Crew, and had like 2 or 3 hits, that was awesome.  The rest....wasn't so much.  I'm sure he'll find a new club....maybe even as a reliever.

Wow
How the mediocre have fallen.

I think the thinking on this site was to offer Ohka arbitration --- not so that we'd keep him, but so that we'd get more for him if he signed elsewhere.

Or something like that.

And, in fairness
odds are that Ohka's ERA wouldn't be above 5.00 if he were pitching in the NL Central instead of the AL East.  Not saying he'd have been good, or that he's going to be good when the Phillies sign him (or whoever), but he was almost uniquely set up for disaster.

Pah
My ERA wouldn't be above 5 in the NL Central.

In fairness
Tomo has pitched against some of the best hitting teams in the majors this season...

Boston - three times
Detroit - once
Tampa - twice (they're schizo, though)
Texas - twice (before the bottom fell out)
Baltimore & Minnesota - once each

I think an NL team would be wise to pick him up.

As Jeff Green would say, "He's a victim of circumstance!"

shoulder
Ohka tore his rotator cuff last year and had surgery to fix it. he won't be the same pitcher he was every again.

I was going to suggest...
... that the Cardinals should pick up Ohka right away.  And that they did.
