Will Ben Sheets be a 2007 All-star?

I got the Sporting News magazine in the mail today and the writer (Stan McNeal) listed who he thought would be on the rosters.  He listed Fielder as a starter and Hardy and Cordero, but no Sheets.

Pros
8-3 3.19 ERA
Winning team
Name recognition

Cons
Started a little slowly
Strikeouts are down.  Hasn't been real dominant.
Every team needs to be represented.
Might have 3 other Brewers on the team.

I'm guessing he sneaks in with an ERA of 2.98. Story is online as well http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=225733

Oof
It appears to be a rough year to be an NL starter, but I think Sheets' chances will be dependent on which (or both) Pirates starter will go and if LaRussa decides to pick Francis from the Rockies.  I think the All-Star team will name six starters (numbering in no particular order)...

Locks

  1. Peavy
  2. Penny
  3. Hamels
  4. Smoltz
Hamels has a lot of strikeouts and a lot of wins.

Maybe

  1. Webb
  2. Gorzelany
  3. Francis
  4. Hudson
  5. Sheets
  6. Snell
  7. Morris
  8. Harang
  9. Oswalt
One thing Sheets has in his favor is that LaRussa sees him all the time, but that also works for Oswalt and Harang.  The Astros should have Lee represent, and the Reds will have Griffey make it as a starter (give it up, voters, it's not 1994).   Matt Morris is also a darkhorse ... if Bonds doesn't get in, LaRussa's history with Morris may give him the benefit (because the Giants are terrible).

I'm not losing sleep over it.  Prince and CoCo will be there at the very least.

Pretty close to right
I would say that Francis would be below sheets, but everyone else is pretty acurate. Francis probably won't make it because Matt Holliday is the lock on the rockies.

Also, what you think hurts sheets, i think helps him.  You thought that his slow start hurt him, but i think his strong finish coming into the all-star will really propel him.

Ned for Prez!! Seriously, he needs a new job.

Forgot about the Morris/Larusa factor
McNeal lists the starters in this order:

Peavy
Penny
Chris Young
Morris
Snell
Smoltz
Hamels
Webb

Closers are
Cordero (Francisco of course)
Saito
Isringhausen
Hoffman

If you look at this you can see that Sheets matches up pretty well with some of the guys, but it looks like a crapshoot.  Could be any combination of things.

Chris Young
I don't think he should go based on his air-ball punch.

Heh.
That would be awesome: if he gets voted in, but is excluded because he punches like a girl.  :)

If he is....
JJ Hardy will have to be excluded because he runs like a girl

One more consideration
Every year a pitcher or two on each team is named to the team, and then doesn't pitch due to injury, or having pitched the day before, or something.  I think sometimes the managers actually pick a pitcher who they know won't be available just so they can honor another player or two.

So...Ben's chances are probably a little better than we make them out to be.

If anyone on the crew is going to get snubbed
It's going to be JJ.  And that is through no fault of his own.  JJ is having an awesome year to this point, despite slowing down a little right now.  Unfortunately, there is also Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins, and Edgar Rentaria having great years as well.  I think Sheets makes it, and JJ gets snubbed, or in as the 30th man.
That's not the Chirizo, It's Enrico Polazzo!

Voted No
I think the only way he gets in is if he pretty much dominates his next two starts and gets to 10 wins.

With Coco, Fielder, Counsellino, Mench, and possibly Hardy- thats just too many Brewers.

...you forgot about gabe gross who really improved his chances with that walk in Monday's game
