Manny Parra threw a perfect game last night. It was only his second start in Triple-A. I don't want to overreact here, but I'd say his prospect status is alive and well.

Wow.

Pen

He is the perfect candidate to pitch out of the pen. His ability to pitch has never been in question. The guy has been a top prospect with great stuff ever since signing as a DAF. But his deal has been injuries. A bit plagued last year, he nonetheless put up quite a few innings and he has made it almost half the year without incident this year. As such, the only thing holding him back is his health history. If the Brewers see him as a starter for the future, then shouldn't the proceed a bit cautiously with his arm? Putting him in relief in the bigs for this year would solve that while allowing the team to rely on crappy arms like spurling and shouse. A full year of health for Parra would go a long way, I'm sure, to helping his confidence as well as taking some pressure off of his arm and let it rebuild itself from the years of problems.

I like the idea....

I think the Crew needs a lefty in the pen that can get both lefties and righties out. I just don't like the idea of a lefty specialist that can only get lefties out.

The downside is that Parra just moved from AA to AAA last week and its probably too early to be promoting him to the bigs.

Still its something to keep an eye on. With Carlos V, Parra, Inman, and Vargas, they have to move guys to the bullpen or trade them.

Seriously, if you are looking for a guy to exchange for Buehrle, this might get it done. Being that we have a commitment to Bush and Vargas.

on the other hand, the last two AAA perfect games were thrown by Ryan Meaux and John Wasdin, so it isn't exactly a guarantee that we've got the next Sandy Koufax here.

why

isn't there more disgust at the idea of putting YoGa in the bullpen? Vargas hasn't pitched into the 7th inning all season, there's absolutely no argument that YoGa isn't better. Maybe I'm reckless, but I just don't think the innings issue is enough of a reason to keep the youngster from maximizing his value to this team.

I hate the idea of moving him to the bull pen, He has done great starting and what happens if he struggles out of the pen, then do we put him back at AAA as a starter, or does he stay in the bull pen there?? He is too young to take a chance at screwing him up. I know it shouldn't matter when he is pitching, but it could, why ruin a good thing!

vargas has

absolutely no real potential as a major league starter. Does anyone really think he will just all of a sudden "get it" out on the mound and figure out how to pitch beyond the 6th or be able to decrease his whip below 1.50??? He hasnt done anything in his career yet beyond average at best (and thats a stretch).He has no fire in him... instead he just plods along excrutiatingly slow looking like he is intimidated by big league hitters. You can't always tell if a guy will be a good player in the big leagues, but you can certainly tell when a player will not be good. Guys his age who havent had great success in the past dont all of a sudden become stars. How long will it take Nedly to figure this one out? Seeing how he hasnt figured out about Spurling yet, get used to seeing Vargas in the rotation and Gallardo peeking over the outfield wall.... If Ned puts Yovani in the bullpen and keeps Vargas, he has absolutely no baseball sense. How can anyone say they think Vargas would help the team more than Gallardo???

Vargas in relief

While he looks eerily similar while starting and in relief, he does walk a higher rate of guys when coming out of the pen.

That said, I still like my idea of having Gallardo pitch five innings per start (to limit his innings) and coupling him with a flex long reliever, a guy who is available to pitch the day (or two) before Gallardo's start if needed but is used mainly to finish off Gallardo's games.

long relief

Vargas seems like an ideal long relief guy if he can hold it together. long relievers seldom go more than 4 innings anyways amd that fits his pitch count well. And although Villanueva would be a very good starting pitching option (a vast improvement over Suppan!) he seems to be relegated to pen for the remainder of the year. Since he is then stuck there, he is far to valuable to be primarily an innings eater when he has already shown this year he can blow through hitters for 1-2 innings as a middle reliever, or better yet, as the 8th inning setup guy

One reason

It prevents Yost from leaving YoGa to throw 120 each start and ruin his arm for future generations of Brewers fans to enjoy. This forces the staff to keep an eye on his pitch count and prevents Yost from having to make a decision (usually the wrong one) when the pitchers' spot in the order comes up in the 6th or 7th with YoGa at 98.

Or something like that.

even if he wants to protect Gallardo, dump Vargas and use Bush when Capuano comes back. And if they are so afraid about Gallardo's health, then just have him pitch his 180 or whatever innings in AAA and rest him until next year. I just dont like the idea of Gallardo in the bullpen. Parra is a much better bullpen candidate in my opinion

Little room

If the suddenly stellar Parra gets the call, another move would have be made, probably involving the suddenly Ricky Bottalico-like Shouse.

All this pitching is a great problem to have. I agree that the team should dump Vargas and his Victor Santos imitation, but Team Canada won't do so hastily.

I am a firm believer

that when you start to take in effect the number of pitches a person can throw that dude always gets hurt. I am sure Yovanni has been beaten by little league and high school coaches by throwing complete games since he was in 5th grade to not think that he can come in and throw 120 pitches because he is 21 is something I do not believe in. You pull a pitcher when he is getting tired (not completely tired) and good coaches should see that. Not that I was ever a professional but when throwing in college out of the bullpen it seemed to put more strain on my arm throwing 30 pitches every 2 days than 100 every third or forth day. It is a different mind set releiving you get ready different, you seem to throw harder because you are put in positions that need you to get out of innings.

This team is not 10 games under .500 what is to say we never get a chance like this again rookie or not you use Gallardo the best way you can to win ball games and right now he is our #2 pitcher and we are in first place throw him out there every 5th DAY

Throwing styles

are 100% different Wood had that herky-jerky motion and had that wicked arm wip for those amazing sliders he threw. I will say I am one that is not for 140 pitch games just pitch him normally and if by 25 he cannot throw I would just think it was not meant to be

I doubt there are many that want to pu him the pen

The Brewers are pretty good about their pitchers. None of them get left out to throw 130 pitches, so I'm not to worried about the handling of Gallardo.

Sheets is the only guy that gets up into the 115-120 range, and he's at least a veteran that they know pretty well.

The only arm injury that I recall in the last few years was Ohka.

I don't care if Gallardo only pitches 5 innings per start. He gives them a better chance to win every fifth day than Vargas does.

Its possible that the Brewers will trade Bush or Vargas, but I would be ok with either of them in the pen.

the comment by Maddux I think it was that said the teams' record when Vargas starts should be taken into account is BS. Unless Vargas is producing all these runs himself, it is pure coincidence that the team scores runs when he pitches.

end of year staff (plaoff roster!!!)

a rotation with Sheets, Capuano, Suppan, Bush, Gallardo with Vargas, Parra, Shouse (but hopefully not!), Wise, Villanueva, Turnbow, and Cordero will be the staff come end of the season
