left hander

just wanted to get everyones thoughts on our situational left hander. Has Shouses' ran his course? Do you think we need to get rid of him and replace him with someone. Or with the log jam in the pen is there a place to add another left hander. Here are a few names to ponder that could be available for not alot of scratch.

Steve Kline SF

Mike Stanton Cin

Jimmy Gobble KC

thoughts???????????

I'm not a fan
of Shouse, Spurling, or Dessens (who's probably been dumped in a swampland somewhere in Jersey by now)

but

I'd hate to lose even a semi-valuable trading chip to replace one mediocre pitcher with another.

dialogue
Melvin: "How's that elbow soreness?"

Dessens: "Doing good.  I think I'm ready to go on a rehab assignment."'

Melvin:  "Hey, look over there!"  <WHACK>

You're so naive
to think Elmer Dessens is still alive.  He's been sent to the glue factory.

shouse
our shouse, is a very, very fine shouse, with two cats in the yard, pitching used to be so hard, now everything is easy cause of shouse.

Shouse
I don't understand all this agitation about Shouse. He's not a bad lefty specialist, if they would just use him that way. The fact that he has faced more righties than lefties is just inane.

Consider this. Shouse has better career numbers against lefties than Mike Stanton does and Stanton is just getting rocked when facing lefties this year. Of course, Stanton's numbers against lefties should improve when his .459 BABIP drops. Shouse compares well to Kline and Gobble as well.

Kline is signed through next season ($1.75M), as is Stanton ($3M), while Gobble is still arbitration-eligible. It would be kind of weird if the Royals gave him up.

shouse
those were the only three I could think of off the top of my "summer Shandy" soaked melon. BAtters have a .257 batting average against him. He does give up a hit an inning. 18 hits for 18 innings total. Yes i do agree he faces WAY more right handers than he should. He has walked 7 in those 18 innings as well.

just thinking for this season. I'm sure the Giants would dump Kline for that much dough.

Egads, man
How could you forget Ray King?! The guy practically fills up RFK Stadium by himself!

Personally, I don't think any of those guys is a big enough upgrade (if any) over Shouse to make it worth trading anything for them.

JOE THATCHER
Joe Thatcher, a 25 year old lefty currently in Nashville, needs to be given a shot in Milwaukee.

In 2005, between Helena and Brevard:
16.6 IP, 1.67 ERA, .904 WHIP, 13 K/9, .54 BB/9

In 2006, between WV, Brevard and Huntsville:
65.6 IP, 1.40 ERA, .899 WHIP, 10.98 K/9, 2.33 BB/9

This year, between Huntsville and Nashville:
28 IP, 1.29 ERA, .893 WHIP, 12.54 K/9, 1.61 BB/9

Best case scenario for me, trade Vargas to make room for Cappy, replace Capellan and Spurling with Thatcher and Parra (or Balfour) in the pen.

parra
parra has some injury past. pitching out of the bullpen is different from the rotation. Luckily Villanueva has taken to it.

Not so sure we'll be able to replicate the success of Gallardo up here with parra or thatcher.

not so sure i'd trade vargas. As davey Nelson said on the pregame. He throws alot of pitches though. He needs to get ahead.
