Game Thread #80: We'll Be Just Fine, Thank You

Three blown saves out of thirty chances in the first 79 games?  If you'd offered me that from our closer on April 1st, I would've taken it in a heartbeat.  Every one of those blown saves hurts, but in the grand scheme of things, we're doing a-ok.  Paul at the WSB does a nice job of putting things in perspective.

Here's hoping that Cubs fans will get a big dose of perspective from Sheets today.  Sheets hasn't faced the northsiders since April, when he left after three innings and scared the crap out of each and every one of us.  So, while his season numbers against them aren't great, they aren't at all related to how he's pitched since then.

For the Cubs today, it's Sean Marshall, who has pitched quite well this year, but kind of looks like a rapper.  In a bad way.

Go Brewers!

it's nice to see brewers games on national tv.  I believe this is our first on fox this year and we had one on espn.

and it sucks for MLBtv users
The game isn't being shown in our area but it is still blacked out on MLBtv :(  I am sure Jeff won't be able to watch either.  Bob and Jim for us.

by dixieflatline on Jun 30, 2007 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Alternate Fox?
If you have satellite, there's some Fox Sports channel that broadcasts in Spanish and usually has one of alternate FOX broadcasts. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I know my dad has been able to watch games that aren't the FOX national broadcast before.

As an aside
I wonder if the 2005 draft was redone today what order Gordon, Zimmerman, and Braun would go?  Both Gordon and Zimmerman have struggled this year but scouts still hate Braun's defense.  Maybe a good question for Goldstein or Sickels.

by dixieflatline on Jun 30, 2007 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Gordon still first
I am fairly sure everyone would still put Gordon first.

by trl1020 on Jun 30, 2007 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

BTW that was a great AB by Braun
seriously catching up to Pence for the NL ROY.

by dixieflatline on Jun 30, 2007 3:56 PM CDT reply actions

Will Braun...
qualify as a rookie again next year? Or has he played to much this year, assuming he finishes up the year?

by trl1020 on Jun 30, 2007 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

BBWAA rookie rules
To be eligible for the RoY award, a player has to have less than 45 days of major league service time entering the season. A batter must have less than 130 career AB prior to the season. A pitcher must have less than 50.0 IP prior to the season.

So Braun wouldn't qualify as a rookie next year.

True
But they better do it quick, he might end up with the six AB's he'd need by the end of this game.

There is no need for him to go over 100 today.  Let him pitch the 6th then let Capellan get some work.

That was a bit suprising...
but Sheets is allowed up to 120 pitches.  Its counter-intuitive, because of his injury history, but his arm has always been sound and he's a vet.

Plus you never know how Bush is gonna be with his odd pitching schedule.

Check it out.  The thing about that is (and i have noticed this the past few days) is that as soon as they get down in a game, they start making fun of other people (such as Fielder and Froemming).  I assume it's to make them feel better about the players on their team.  Fielder may be fat, but I fail to see how that has any relevance in any game save the MN game with the inside the park HR.

by The Prospector on Jun 30, 2007 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

Pinch hitting for Sheets?
WTF Ned.  He is only one inning away from the complete game!  He is only at 124 pitches.  Be a man.  Let his arm fall off to get him the complete game!  It isn't like there is a lot of the season remaining.  Getting this last inning builds confidence in the team and in Sheets.  That is worth like 10 wins in the standings.

Perhaps
I don't know when pitchers are picked, but I wonder if Ned was trying to make Sheets' stats look nicer by giving him a few more innings to get strikeouts and limit the damage to his ERA by giving up four runs. I kind of hope it wasn't as weak a reason as that though.
