Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

We are halfway there!

81 games down 81 to go.  What are you happy about? Not so happy about?  I'll go first.

-- Happy --

Hart and Hardy (sounds like a soup).   These are the hitters that surprised me.  I know others have been high on Hart, but I had not been bullish on someone that projected to be a .280 20/20 guy.

The Uber Prospects  I know its early and that they may occasionally struggle, but Braun can rake.  And Yovani can mow.

Sheets  Kind of taken for granted, and hasn't been flashy, but the healthy ace has been very good.

The Closers  Turnow and Cordero have been very solid

-- Not So Happy --

Middle relief  Dessens and Aquino have highlighted some shaky middle relievers.

Weeks His window for taking the next big step is closing

Starters not named Sheets  A whole lot of average.

Outfield depth  If Jenkins could hit lefties, Mench might never play.  Gross is just a guy.

more Good and Bad
Good:  Relievers have been pretty solid. Aquino and dessens make up 22.2 total innings.  They barely highlight the relief corps. Villenueva and Wise represent the long relief much more than the other two.

Good: Bye bye crapellan!!

Good: Damian Miller. For a backup catcher he's been pretty valuable.  I don't know what the record when he plays is now, but at one time it was unbelievable.

Good: Claudio Vargas. Probably the best 5 pitcher in all of baseball.  In other words, trade him now, cause he's not this good.

Good: Craig Counsell's defense.  It couldnt have been better.

Bad: Dave Bush. Poor mans Greg Maddux has looked like poor mans Mike Maddux.

Bad: Nick Leyva (3rd base coach) This guy needs no jock, cause he has no balls.

Bad: Ginger Jordan. I don't ever need to hear her talk at a brewers game again.

Ned for Prez!! Seriously, he needs a new job.

Regarding our recent Cubs series...
I'm ecstatic that we earned a Pythagorean series win (a .605 winning percentage), and I assume that Cubs fans are deeply disappointed in their team's performance, even if it doesn't show up in the standings.

1 Good, 1 Bad
The Bad: starting pitching.  It's been masked by out first half surprises of Hart and Hardy and the fantastic statistics of Prince, CoCo, et al., but grant76 hit it on the head: out starting pitchers not named Sheets have been underperforming (or had expectations set too high).  Sheets is doing what a healthy Sheets is expected to (though the walk rates are a little alarming), and Vargas is pitching above his head.  However, Suppan, Bush, Capuano have been disappointing.  Let's hope they get it in gear in the second half.

The Good: How about that Ned Yost character?  In spite of himself, he's still guided the Brewers to one of the best records in the NL, and for the first time ever, there were points during the season where he made good, not-so-easy decisions.  (I think he's going against his natural tendencies, like George Costanza did in that Seinfeld episode.)  I'm thrilled to have the team doing so well, and he deserves some credit, if not for properly managing the team, then for not screwing it up so badly.  Here's hoping we win the World Series, and he is in so much demand that we can't possibly keep him.

That's true
despite the good label, i wonder if Opposite Ned would have a better record.

My take
Good:
Prince Fielder - We all expected big things from him, but did we think he'd be leading the NL in home runs? I'd say he's done more than his share picking up the slack from some of the disappointments below.
J.J. Hardy - His early-season breakout was a marvel, though he struggled mightily in June.
Geoff Jenkins - While he's not lighting the world on fire, he stoically took his demotion to platoon player in stride and continues to provide a good bat in the lower part of the order against righties.
Ryan Braun - He was called up perhaps earlier than intended but has shown he belongs at this level. Hopefully he will avoid slumping as the league sees him a second and third time but for now it's a heck of a ride.
Claudio Vargas - Don't rip me too much for this, but "Voudini" has been a pleasant surprise this first half of the season. Sure he lets too many guys on base and has way too many jams, but if you told me after the Meche deal last winter that we'd acquire a pretty darn good #5 starter making $2.5 million this year, I'd have been happy.
The bullpen - Yes, I'm saying the whole thing. Sure, Aquino was bad and Dessens might be on the DL because the team can't remember what city they left him in, but overall these guys have done pretty well for themselves. When your biggest complaint is the 11th and 12th man (Spurling/Capellan), you've got a pretty good set of relievers.

Disappointing:
Tony Graffanino and Craig Counsell - The Dubious Duo perhaps made their greatest contribution to the season so far by forcing the front office to call up Ryan Braun. That said, they make up one of the best pairs of backup infielders any team has in the majors. Add the fact that Tony Graffanino might be a valuable throw-in at the deadline for whatever missing piece the team needs and it's hard to hate these guys anymore.
Bill Hall - His bat's been MIA most of the season. That in itself is a disappointment, though he's shown signs of turning his year around. His adjustment to center field is progressing well, however.
Kevin Mench - "The Giant Head" started the season in the fans' doghouse by whining about being platooned. Just a look at his time with the Brewers last year and the fact he got a $600,000 raise for it convinces me he should be thanking his lucky stars they were going to play him regularly at all. After a decent start to the year he's been essentially invisible, more so after he moved himself out of record-setting base on balls futility.
Chris Capuano & Jeff Suppan - I had expected a little more from both these guys than what they've had so far. That said, there's plenty of season left for them to turn it around.
Dave Bush - Once upon a time, a train approached a bridge displaying a red flag, meaning the train should stop. The conductor, hurrying to the next stop, ignored the sign and the train ran off the bridge and into a frozen river, killing all the passengers. Now, I'm not saying Dave Bush's year has killed anyone outright, but there are similarities.
Ned Yost - I'm not as militant about him getting fired as some people are, but there are things he does that I don't like. He doesn't manage the bullpen as well as some other managers, a comparison which probably gives him the most benefit of the doubt. He also, from time to time, makes questionable decisions on any topic a decision has to be made about. That said, he's not truly awful and I think the team could do a lot worse.

ok, that's a pretty good line.
