Spewing vitriol

There's a story by Al at the  other BCB about supposed vitriol that we were coming up with during the game.  Now, I don't deny we might not have been nice (what fans are ever nice to opposing fans?) but I wouldn't call it vitriol.  Al (who genuinely seems like a nice guy, except for the whole "being a Cubs fan" thing) takes the high(er) and tries to calm down people on both sides (or so it looks).  Which leads to one of their guys saying this. Which I find weird, because I think the reason that us "dumb asses" haven't mentioned that we've pissed away a HUGE lead is- well, because we haven't.  The biggest lead we have had was an 8.5 lead on both the Cubs and Cards on June 22nd and 23rd.  It's now at 6.5 games.  I wouldn't exactly say that's pissing away a lead.  So, to recap- 8.5 games- HUGE.  6.5 a week later (and a week closer to the end of the year), a pissed away chance that shall ruin us and send the franchise into a tailspin (ok, I exaggerated that, but still).  Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying that a 6.5 game lead is huge.  I'd rather we were up 15, because I'd feel safe.  I don't feel safe at 6.5, and I didn't feel safe at 8.5 at the time.  Now, if it were the end of August/beginning of September, I'd feel better.  But there's a lot more baseball to be played.  Another thing- I don't know why we'd fall down to "the old Brewer ball that we all know and love," because this isn't those teams.  This team is better than those teams.  I'm not saying we won't slip.  We probably will.  And I hope we can hold on and stay on top, because I've been waiting for the playoffs with this team for a long time.

Oh, and the reason we don't go choke on a brat is because we (unlike some other fans, apparently) can chew and cheer at the same time.

As a spewer of Vitriol...
I will gladly say that when it comes to class and baseball acumen, we as fans far exceed them as fans.  Period.

Odd
The quote is:
I wanted to say a few things to Brewers fans, some of whom I know read this site. I've read some of your comments, particularly at Brew Crew Ball, a site I admire, and frankly I was astonished at the vitriol you threw our way. For my part, I just want you to know that I have always respected the Brewers and their fans; when Milwaukee was an AL team I used to root for them, obviously, I don't any more, but I do have a great respect for what Doug Melvin and Ned Yost have built -- you guys have a very, very good team to cheer for this year (and likely, with the youth of your lineup, for many years to come), and I look forward to the rest of this season, to perhaps a closer race, and a budding rivalry that could become a great one. Let's not hate on each other. Deal?

I know it's easy for things to get out of control on a blog, where anonymity tends to bring out the worst in some people, so I'm usually in favor of statements like Al's to keep the peace.  Having said that...am I missing something?  We were visiting friends in Appleton, so I missed the third game's thread, but I don't remember anything that out of line --- certainly nothing like "UP YER ASSES BREWERS" like you get on the Cubs' site.  Heck, we even had a Cubs fan visit the site, and I think he was pretty well treated.

What kind of reaction would a Brewer fan get if he posted a "Good Luck Cubs" diary on the other BCB?  I'm guessing not so pleasant.

Anyway, fine, call a truce, if you like --- I'm all for it.  But let's not pretend it's a 50/50 split, OK?

I must have missed it too...
I don't recall us being jerks to any cubs fans in the game thread.  Al didn't post any instances of us being jerks.  kinda confused.

Again, my experience with cubs fans this year.
http://www.brewcrewball.com/story/2007/6/5/14841/92283

For some reason, I forgot to mention that I also got beer spilled on me and the first response I got from the cubs fan was, (yelling) "You think I f*** did that on purpose?  That cost me 6.50."  Eventually I got a (yelling) "I'm f*** sorry!"

I know that all cubs fans aren't like that; but I had three very unpleasant instances that day in my home stadium.  No respect.

I actually don't go on Bleed Cubbie Blue, cause I really don't want to start anything (and I'm a Brewer fan, and don't really care what the cubs fans are saying).  I kinda wish we would keep to our own pages so the websites don't turn into the trash talking website the ESPN Brewers page was.

I like this page cause everyone respects everyone 99.9% of the time, and shares their well thought out or not so well thought out points (like me wondering if the Twins would trade Pat Neshek for Mench).

i thought al's comments were pretty tacky, and as usual, poorly researched with a dab of disrespect.

To be fair
a couple fans (including Al) have called the person on what he said after I posted.  So there ARE some there who don't think along the same lines as azweber9 (which doesn't surprise me).

If you look at that thread...

in my impression
charges of "vitriol" being spewed are often used as code for "those meanies were making fun of us, how dare they".

Eh
You managed to disclaim your association with rationality and intelligence with the high-school level use of "punk asses" and the illogical claim that the Brew Crew has "pissed away a HUGE lead". It's pretty funny to see you play the "oh, woe is me, that meanie jacob isn't taking seriously my serious attempts at serious discourse" card now.

by Zeyes on Jul 3, 2007 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Well that was nice...
At least, until I read what you seem to be apologizing for:
Thos fans talk a whole lot of shit.

Just a bunch of punk asses if you ask me. One thing their dumb asses forgot to mention, the Brewers have managed to piss away a HUGE lead in this division and it isn't even the AS break yet...

I hope they come talkin smack when they have dropped even further down.  I am fully confident that they in fact, cannot hold this lead and are soon to return to the old Brewer ball that we all know and love.

I for one, now can say, that I HATE the Brewers and THEIR fans.  As one of those morons said about the Cubs and their fans.

Why don't they go and choke on a brat?

I'm with Al, who seems like a cool guy to me: do you really want to explain to us "punk asses" which is the "ironic/humorous" part?  Isn't it more likely that your apology now is full of shit?  (Actually, now that I look back, you didn't really apologize, did you?)

Hey, but no one says you have to.  There are plenty of well-meaning Cubs fans (and Cardinals fans, and Brewer fans, and even Yankee fans) who are welcome to talk baseball here all they like.  If you don't like us --- and, as so you eloquently stated, you HATE us --- fine, just stay off the site.

Or, as a wise man once said:

Here is what I am not wrong about...

You are a troll.  You DO spew and run in that, you drop by whenever there is some pointless, annoying, and often obnoxious comment to be made.  You visit here only when you THINK you have some point to make with regards to a team that you do not like.  I recently saw a Saturday Night Live with a character that always chimed in to "one up" everyone else.  She was extremely annoying and I found myself saying aloud to my wife, I really hated that woman.  Guess who you are in the sketch.

I am right in saying that you are not welcome here by most, and that this blog would be MUCH better off without your worthless input.

I am right in saying that the White Sox suck shit this season and you most likely come here to talk out of your ass, (and often leave quckly after that) so that you can feel a little better about yourself as a Sox fan, and even more, as a person.

I am right when I say, I have pointlessly wasted too much breath responding to you, as do many others here.  You are a wannabe intellectual who offers supposed insight where it is not all that welcome.

Finally, I am right in saying that you are extremely annoying and you should just stick with a Whiote Sox blog where you can commiserate and remain in similar company.

I'd say that was pretty manly to admit where I was wrong.  Hopefully you are done here.

Personally, I don't get the hubbub
I wonder what, exactly, the "vitriol" was. I don't think there was anything out of line. I'm sure some of what I said was taken badly but I fail to see how it was vitriolic. I certainly didn't mean anything more than I personally feel like we here have a superior set of contributors when it comes to baseball analysis, especially from a statistical bent. If that's not your thing, fine, enjoy the superficial, up-front parts of the game. If what we said was vitriolic, so was mocking the game graphs, for just one example.

What really annoyed me was the guy who continually complained about the Brewers stealing bases (get a catcher who can throw guys out if it bothers you) and whoever it was that called for Fielder to be beaned (grow up). I know they weren't the same people.

Like they've said on Bleed Cubbie Blue, it sucks that obnoxious fans exist, but I don't think there are any that egregious here or there.

One more thing
I really shouldn't bring this up because it'll just continue this dumb squabbling, but I don't see how this diary is at all mocking, as claimed here. The diary admits that we said things that might not have been polite and then goes on to break down a comment from a Cubs fan (supposedly in jest). Excuse me if I don't see how that could bruise anyone's feelings (which brings up another point: if you bleed blue, what color do bruises turn?).

I'm glad they said, in the comment I linked to, that the guy posting here today was a jerk. As for us jumping on the Cubs...well, they're in second place and that's who we were playing.  Has anyone from here gone over to their BCB and made dumb Cubs-bashing comments all over their daily thread? I certainly hope not because I tend to think other-team bashing should stay confined to your home site (i.e., it's okay to read and react to other sites, but not okay to post inanely on them).
