Home Run Derby

Baseball Tonight just reported that Prince will be in the Derby and Howard will be back to defend his crown even though he isn't an all star.
I wish Prince would sit this one out and not mess with his swing.
The Fox crew was talking about it Saturday during the Mets vs. Phils game, which us east coast saps got instead of Cubs vs. Brewers.  They said Wright is sitting out this year because he felt it really hurt him in the second half and his HR total suffered.  However, Howard obviously had a great second half after winning the derby.
Thoughts?

Bobby Abreu
it seems that his usefulness offensively all but ended with his HR derby win 2 years ago.

I'm not worried
Prince's swing -- at least before there are two strikes on him -- is a home run cut, pure and simple.

Not that it's necessarily related, but anybody remember if Cecil ever participated, and if so, how he did?

Too Easy :-D
Way too much history available here: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/hr_derby.jsp

Cecil Fielder:
1993, Baltimore - 5th overall with 4 homers
1991, Toronto - 3rd overall with 4 homers (same year noted power threat Chris Sabo hit 0)
Perhaps the most bizarre:
1990, Chicago (Wrigley) - the wind must have been blowing in because the eight players combined for 5 home runs. Cecil had none.

Interesting
I remember the Sabo year -- I couldn't figure out how he got in.

I had no idea all of that was available ... thanks!

More Sabo
You'll never EVER guess what he's endorsing now, but you have to watch the commercial. He's towards the end but the beginning part is worth it.

I'm going to go ahead and
make a prediction.  During the HR Derby and after a particularly long HR, Chris Berman shall say "That one's all the way to _____!" and name a smallish city near San Francisco.

Rancho Cucamonga
I don't know where in CA (it is out there, right?) that is, but I bet Berman won't be able to resist saying it.

RC
Their minor league (an Angels affiliate) is called the Quakes.  It's a long story, but I have a pile of random minor league hats I got from a friend, and I always wear the Quakes hat when I play tennis.

Whenever anybody asks me what the hell it is, I say "Rancho Cucamonga" and it always gets a laugh.  Silly New Yorkers.

I knew they were the Quakes
I was always kind of bummed they didn't have a two-word nickname, so the team name would be four words total. Of course, it still wouldn't have beaten the old Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons.

Well, hell
I don't think I'd be able to either.  That'd be just a fun word to say.

I'm going with
Berkeley.  though on second thought, since they're hitting towards the water, it's gotta be Alcatraz.

Sausalito is more likely
It is on the other side of the bay...

Menlo Park
San Jose
Angel Island

do it prince
Nothing brings a players power status to the forefront more than a home run derby. We always hear about prince's power during BP, but its way too early to watch it live. Now's our chance to see the moon shots that prince can hit.  Its rare for a brewer to be in the home run derby, but prince would be a huge crowd pleaser and gain even more national attention.

However, it may get boring when all the homers land in the water and nobody in the crowd knows how far they actually went.

Prince has three things going for him that will help him become a household name.

  1. The first name of Prince.
  2. His lineage.
  3. His weight, everybody loves the loveable fat guy. i.e. John Daley
Ned for Prez!! Seriously, he needs a new job.

by Zel123 on Jul 3, 2007 10:43 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, sure
I think it'd be fun to see Prince unleashing bombs all over the place too- I just don't want to see him risk messing up his swing.  Perhaps as Jeff (and others) have pointed out it's less of a risk for him than some others, but I just don't see it as being worth the possibility, however remote, of screwing up his season.

by sheeter on Jul 3, 2007 5:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He's cold right now
so maybe the national exposure will get his bat back on track.

and I hope you're right.

apropos of not much
but your mention of BP made me think of those "Derrick Turnbow launches some awesome homers during batting practice" comments out of the clubhouse a few weeks ago. :)

(At least I think it was Turnbow...)

by Zeyes on Jul 3, 2007 6:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Prince
I have to believe the "swing-messing" capabilities of the HR Derby do not affect everyone.  You know they go out there in BP sometimes and try to hit HRs.

Besides, as Jeff said, Prince won't be altering his swing significantly.  David Wright, however, probably did.

the affects of the derby
are a convenient excuse.  Where did Caballo's power go last year after he skipped the derby, blaming it for his second half swoon the year before?

by Bill on Jul 3, 2007 11:14 AM CDT   0 recs

Caballo always has a 2nd half power swoon
It's just his way.  Career wise, he hits homers every 5.1 games in the first half, and 5.5 games in the 2nd.  I think it's a conditioning thing, and I think this year's swoon will be more based on the fact that he ate Chris Burke.

i have on occasion
salivated on what our offense would look like if we'd somehow signed Caballo last offseason (while retaining our haul from Texas) and put him in LF.  But I have to say that I'm very, very glad that a division rival, not us, is paying his enormous, lengthy contract.

Has anyone noticed that Carlos always seems to find his way to get to losing teams?  After the White Sox traded him, they won the WS.  Now we're having a good year.  Meanwhile, his Astros are basically last year's Brewers:  Carlos hitting with occasional help from somebody else, inconsistent pitching, losing record.

only if we hire buck showalter then fire him we'd be in the gold

Ode to spring.

I like the snow as much as anybody who likes snow. I even don't dread shoveling. Still, I find myself anxious for spring.

Why?

I can't wait to play hookey from work or school and make it to a game at Miller Park. I want to have the money I save now go to a goal other than just tuition and bills. I want to sit behind home plate and watch Brauny hit a monstrous homer.

And that, my friends, is all I want for Christmas - spring.
