Newsville: Sheets out until 9/1

For whatever reason, I relented and subjected myself to a Baseball Tonight.  As excruciating as it was, Peter Gammons, the lone voice of reason, came on and said that Ben Sheets will not be pitching for the Brewers before 9/1.  I don't think he has any other information.

Star-divide

I don't think the club will push him, but the optimistic Brewers fans should be disappointed.  I'm not concerned about it seeing how well Gallardo is pitching, but it's saddening nonetheless.

I've been firmly in the camp that many of Sheets' injuries were of the freak variety, but will the Brewers ever be able to count on a perfectly healthy Ben Sheets from this point forward?

Well, that's upsetting
I think most of his injuries have been freaky as well, but this is kind of ridiculous.

Yes, but
isn't that what we expected?  After the last discussion with the doctors, Sheets even said he expected to be out the full six weeks, which would be somewhere around Sept. 1.

Still, I agree that his string of fluky injuries is incredibly upsetting.  I only hope that he comes back strong in the final month to give the team a final lift heading into the home stretch and the playoffs...

Yeah
I guess I didn't want to believe that Sheets was going to be out that long until a man of some stature would come out and say it.  I think I was more startled than anything that Gammons lead off his segment with this, so at least he recognizes the Brewers are going to be in playoff contention this year.

ESPN
I had wondered why so many railed on the quality of ESPN...  Then, for the first time in years, I got cable, and good grief, ESPN is UNWATCHABLE.  After watching one episode of Sportscenter, I think I might have to punch the next person who says someone is 'clutch.'  Sorry if this is off topic.

Clutch
My kingdom for a Brewer who can get a clutch hit.

Sheets
I will be surprised if the China Doll makes it back by Sept 1.  Thankfully we have plenty of pitching depth.  And as much as I like to take some good natured shots at Ben, I don't think we are going anywhere in the post season without him.  In fact before the season started I was thinking that he would have to win at least 18 for us to make the playoffs.

Looks like
the Sheets/Gallardo pitching monster will have those 18 wins combined.  Not bad for the #1 position, but too bad that we won't get 18 from Sheets and 8 or so from Gallardo.

sadly
he's making it easier and easier to justify letting him go as a free agent after next season.

here's hoping for a sharp Parra start on Saturday, so we know we've got someone else to turn to if we get another injury and/or somebody (Vargas) implodes.

Ode to spring.

I like the snow as much as anybody who likes snow. I even don't dread shoveling. Still, I find myself anxious for spring.

Why?

I can't wait to play hookey from work or school and make it to a game at Miller Park. I want to have the money I save now go to a goal other than just tuition and bills. I want to sit behind home plate and watch Brauny hit a monstrous homer.

And that, my friends, is all I want for Christmas - spring.
