Game Thread #83: One Cappy Gone, One Cappy Back
This afternoon at 3:05 CT, it's Chris Capuano vs. Shane Youman. Youman is young, he's promising, and given the Pirates track record, he's going to be visiting Dr. James Andrews in early August. (Ok, maybe that's in bad taste -- I don't wish it on him, but Pitt's track record isn't all that good.) It's Zach Duke's spot in the rotation, but Duke is injured. I don't wish that on him either, but I certainly don't mind missing him, given some of the Duke vs. Brewers games in recent memory.
Here's hoping that yesterday night's Damian-fest, combined with some premature fireworks today, mean we can finally get the PNC monkey off of our back. I mean, it's the Pirates, right?
Go Brewers!

Last night's game recap
3-star- Billy Hall went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. He's slowly but surely raising his numbers to last year's level.
2-star- Carlos Villanueva. I hate to see line's like this from the long reliever, since usually it means that something awful happened beforehand, but Villa is proving that maybe we should rethink BOTH Vargas and Bush (despite his recent success) in the rotation (in addition for moving YoGa in). Anyway, Villa went 4.0 IP, with 2 hits, no walks, and 5 Ks. He recieved the W, and was the best pitcher in the game today.
and the #1 Star- Damien "don't call me Jake Taylor" Miller. Taylor had a career day, with his 7 RBIs and 2 jacks. It can't hurt getting that kind of production from your back-up catcher, who has 11 RBIs in his last 2 starts to go along with 3 jacks. By the way, it's always fun to scream "TAYLOR BUNTS" whenever he gets up there.
As for your LVB... Suppan only gave up 3 runs in 5 innings, but you need more than 5 from your inning-eating starter. Also, Jinx was 0-4.
Let's take another one with Cappy on the mound... but have YoGa ready to roll just in case...

Second half
Same with Rickie, though maybe to a lesser extent.
Suppan
Soup's recent history...
'05 1st half: 4.21
'05 2nd half: 2.78
'06 1st half: 5.83
'06 2nd half: 2.39
'07 1st half: 4.90
I am personally projecting a 2.63 ERA for Soup in the 2nd half.

its time
On a brighter note, of Cappy's last six starts, in five he received only one run of offensive support.

Please go away. I had a wonderful time at Wrigley Field on Saturday and was shocked at how gracefully I was treated after seeing how Cubs fans at Miller Park often behave. Don't ruin it.

cubs fans
Or when they attacked mike myers, their relief pitcher, for blowing a save.
You're probably the type of cubs fan who was excited when the White Sox won the world series.
As for the rivalry thing, cubs fans made it a rivalry by coming up to miller park. Also, im pretty sure we were in the world series in 1982, a long long time ago, but the cubs is far far longer. So yes, the brewers have been good for half a year, but that is far better than the entire cubs history.
Finally, the 'fine' state of Wisconsin. I believe its always illinois drivers going north every weekend during the summer. There are not many Wisconsinites going south. So you may be from somewhere else, but 'do your research' before you make comments about which you know nothing about.

wow...
For the record, the morons who attacked Gamboa lived within the 294 loop in Alsip, IL, which is a half hour from US Cellular Field. But this isn't about the white sox meth-headed fans. This is about the guys that blame a long dead animal for their team's issues. Not to mention a guy with a walkman for losing a game. He didn't give up 8 runs in the inning. Nor did he fail to show up for game 7. Stop your bitching, and take stock moron.

Ahh, memories
Perhaps most on topic for your post: do you even remember the last time the Cubs had a decent closer?
Mom, is that you?
Actually, our guest does have a point: we have only started to put a good team out there, and when anyone thinks "Chicago Cubs," they think of the Cubs' outstanding tradition of excellence on the baseball field. Remember that time when they won the World Series on the home run by....
Saaaaay....wait a minute....
Cubs history

I was saying
Not only that, but it's been more than 50 years since the Cubs have have even reached the World Series. Forget winning it, even given the opportunity to lose it. You've had a 25-year run of not winning the NL title going even before the Brewers blinked into existence.
Sure, the Brewers haven't been all that great, but we at least won the AL title in 1982, and, lest we forget, it was Lew Burdette's Milwaukee Braves who won the World Series in 1957. Why, I bet there are people even on your own Bleed Cubbie Blue who remember Milwaukee winning the World Series.
It's kind of cute, though, a mewling little kitten thinking he's a lion. Awwww, look at the little fellah, pretending to be something he's not. Yes, my wittle cubbie will be big and strong someday! Oh yes you will! In the meantime, I'm sure there's an obstructed seat at Miller Park with your name on it when the Brewers host the playoffs this year.
Hey numbnuts
Definitely sounds like a Cubs fan, since you sure don't know much about baseball.

I love Chicago!
Friday was awesome, until the end. The worst insult I suffered was a good friend of mine who is a Cubs fan, in the bar where we were watching the game, gave me a noogie. I'm 30. That was kind of embarassing, but all in all, a great day.
Then, on Saturday, I picked up the greatest ticket scalp of all time. Not 15 minutes after a guy wanted $150 for a bleacher seat right at game time, I picked up a $6 SRO seat from a guy who was friendly and just wanted to get rid of it. I met up with some friends and we took some empty seats near the top of the lower deck but behind home plate. It was awesome.
After the Brewers lost on Sunday, I was thinking, "Eh, whatever."
princefieldersdiet, I'm just not feeling your hate, kiddo. The Cubs are hot and so are the Brewers. We're both playing lousy teams this week.
Can't wait to get back to Chicago, though. Great town.

Cubs and Brewers ... separated at birth?
There's the Pirates and Nationals road trips they're both playing now. Then, after the break, the Cubs have 10 at home against Houston, S.F. and Arizona while the Brewers have 10 at home against Colorado, Arizona and S.F.
Then, both teams hit the road, taking turns visiting the Reds and Cardinals.
By the end of July, after playing pretty the exact same teams, I have a hard time seeing the Cubs playing those clubs at a record that is 7 games better than Milwaukee, considering the Brewers get a 10-game homestand as part of that run, just like the Cubs.
Maybe August will be kinder to Chicago-N.L.? Going to have to hope so if you're a Cubs fan.
by Augustine Jersey on Jul 3, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah he's an idiot
Maybe you should go back in time about a 100 years and bask in the glory of the Cubs when they actually could win it all. The Cubs should have more championships than the Brewers...they've been around about 60+ years longer. And they still only have 2 more....can you say sad?

Thank you, zero.
In fact, a big fat zero a few weeks back by the Brewers against Justin Verlander jump-started the Brewers current hot streak.

Now you're just not making sense.
You are sounding like the Cubs fan who can't be critical of his own team; one who can't step back and take a look at the team from another point of view. A face-painter. An educated baseball fan is the best team fan.
by lovejones72 on Jul 3, 2007 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions
While I do agree with you on that point,
Brewers fans, please don't lump this CS in with the rest of Cubs Nation. Personally, I love Milwaukee and Wisconsin on the whole. Goolsbys, Sprecher Abbey Triple, et al - love it all.

I'm sorry that we've been a lousy baseball team for only one-third of the time that the Cubs have been a lousy baseball team. Or that only one generation of Brewers fans haven't seen a World Series, versus 4 generations of Cubs fans.
I mean, did you know that the US only had 48 states the last time the Cubs reached the World Series? That the last time they won, the South Pole hadn't been discovered yet?
That's a lonnnnnng time.
