LaPorta!!!
Weird, but not weird.

Bobby Bramhall
Sounds like a name you might hear on late-night infomercials... And Kurt Crowell must be some weird mix of Kurt Russell and Russell Crowe.

BTW, LaPorta DH'ed the game...be interesting to see if that was just for the first game, or if they'll work him half and half like they've done with Jon Lucroy (who's been splitting time between C and DH). Or maybe he's not physically ready to play the outfield altogether yet?

Finally...
A LaPorta sighting!!!

Nice line!

Hey Ned! Ever heard of small ball? Or are your balls too small?

LaPorta
Is he a 3TO type of guy?

by drezdn on Jul 31, 2007 8:16 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

3TO
Not really.  He hit for average and rarely struck out at Florida.  He was the complete hitter there, but if he turns into Adam Dunn, that wouldn't be the worse thing ever.  At this point, there should be plenty of hope for a few .310/.400/.600 lines in his prime.

At this rate
Laporta will be breaking Bond's soon to be record in 5 major league seasons. 1HR per game played...
Watching Yovani pitch probably compares to driving a Lamborghini Gallardo.

And...
it was in his first at bat as a major leaguer. I wonder how often that happens. Guy must be pretty confident.

Even better...
"Missoula scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning, but LaPorta tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. On an 0-1 count, two out and no one on LaPorta hit a no-doubt home run to left field with his first professional swing."

First swing!

And this is probably why he is playing DH for now: "LaPorta had spent the last three weeks rehabbing a leg injury at the Brewers' minor league facility in Maryvale, AZ. He is currently expected to be day-to-day in Helena while the athletic training staff continues to evaluate and treat him."

damn it!
You stole my line!

Maybe we should just start with a promotion to West Virginia . . .

It will not happen
But seriously I would take the bet that if Jenkins and LaPorta had the same number of AB's this season in the BIGS LaPorta would have better numbers.  As far as D goes hell Graffy had played left for a few games.

Good things to come
Does anyone know what Geoff Jenkins did in his first major league swing?  You guessed it, swung and missed against a lefty.  So Laporta is already following a different path then jenks.

Im not really sure what jenks did in his first swing, but i wouldn't be surprised at all if it was.

Ned for Prez!! Seriously, he needs a new job.

he homered in his first major league AB, don't know how to find out what he did in his first professional AB.

Nearly impossible to find...
I can't find a box score from back then. I'm pretty sure his first game would've been in June of 1995 on the Helena Brewers. The Helena Independent Record is the newspaper the boxscore would be in, but their archives only go back to 2000. I think we can safely assume he struck out on a curveball in the dirt. Jenkins was 9-28 with 1 triple, 2 runs, 0hrs, 9rbis, and 11ks in his 7 games with the Helena Brewers.

Gord on LaPorta
"As soon as he is able to play the field he will move to [Class A] West Virginia," Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said. "When that will be, I can't say. Hopefully, within a week to 10 days."

latest Notes at brewers.com

I'm a bit surprised...I figured with his late start they'd have him play out the season at Helena.
