Random thought: most team wear their white jerseys at home, right? If you're the batter trying to hit a pitched ball, from your point of view, much of the flight path of the ball is being set agaainst the backdrop of the uniform of the pitcher. I wonder if it's tougher to pick up the ball when the opposing pitcher is wearing white, as opposed to a darker contrasting color. You only have a fraction of a second anyway...
This seems like a question for TheJay! :)
Oh geez
I do know there's a rule that a pitcher can't wear a long-sleeved undershirt (or anything on their throwing arm) that's light colored, because it'd make it nearly impossible to pick up the ball. In a Cleveland-Seattle playoff game years ago Lou Piniella tried to rattle Bartolo Colon by requesting the umpires make him change his gray undershirt, and they did.
