Excellent!  Also, a pretty solid lineup for Nedly.  Certainly you could argue flipping Fielder and Braun but besides that pretty solid.

Wow look at that FB and LD percentage
for Rich Hill.  No wonder is has given up so many homers.  With the wind blowing out and high 80's temperature hopefully he will give up a couple more tonight.

how to beat rich hill
you're going to get two pitches from rich hill curveball and mediocre fastball. As i said last year, rich hill is the successful version of Ben Hendrickson. You simply have to be patient with him and sit on the high fastball. Knock him around all day...

In fact, if you'll recall Hill's last start against Milwaukee, it took him 92 pitches to get through three innings. We'll see if the club can still play like that, or if they are pressing too much. Patience today boys, this kid is soft!

by jacob on Aug 28, 2007 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

The did foul off about a million pitches
That is unlikely to happen again but they had the right approach like you said.  I mentioned it in the series writeup as well.  That fastball is very straight and not very fast.  Get in hitters counts and hammer the fastball.  Hopefully they will keep that approach going today.

Wow I can't believe how fired up I am
for this game.  I wonder if the guys in the dugout are just as fired up or if they are deer in the headlights?  I really have a good feeling about tonight's game which is strange for how I have been feeling about the team recently.

A lot more contact there
and still not a lot of curves for Hill.  The must have looked at the tape and saw the crew was laying off that pitch early in the count in his last two starts and decided to go with a lot of fastballs.  Unlike Suppan, Hill has been up in the zone a lot today.  If we can make contact we can make him pay.

by DoubleJ235 on Aug 28, 2007 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, this is what I don't get
I don't exactly do anything earth-shattering or useful in stats breakdowns on my blog, so I figure he/she is in one of two categories:
  1. He/she has quite a statistical bent and really dislikes what I do. I can't imagine someone like that being that flippant.
  2. He/she is like the Cubs fans that troll here, a complete idiot that thinks anything statistical, whether useful or useless, is gibberish and feels threatened by it and must post anonymously in some self-important, feel-good way as if that will turn everyone into some Cubbie Care Bear, fall-asleep-in-the-poppies-to-the-strains-of-Kumbaya, love-your-brothers clone.
At least, those are the only sorts of Cubs fans I know of. Either way, I think it's funny they spent enough time here to get the link to my blog and then decided to post a stupid comment. I know I shouldn't talk about having a real life, but c'mon, have a little pride in your trolling. If you're going to rail about someone, at least make it into some sort of self-important, rambling diatribe. ;)

Did anyone say anything about lucky breaks when the team had that ridiculously hot start? It was a bad inning; I don't think it's jump-off-a-bridge bad. What team have you been watching the past two months?

This is PRECISELY what's happened ... over and over and over again since the break.

I'd kill...
for the Brewers to be this "lucky." It always seems to be the other teams get lucky ... 14 times this season the other team has been lucky when the Brewers have had a three-run lead. What good team blows 14 three-run leads?

After a while, for this board, who feasts on numbers, would need to say: "That's a negative trend."

And his fault or not, Yost can't push the right button, no matter what button he tries to push.

But to not recognize the seventh inning of tonight's game as a microcosm of the season ... I can't agree with you there.

"You could give the man in second place an extra 180 home runs and he still wouldn't catch Aaron in total bases."

by HobokenCrew on Aug 28, 2007 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying the other 14 times were luck
I'm saying that two infield hits isn't going to happen often. For all I know the other thirteen times they blew a lead the ball was hit hard. I'll grant that the double that tied the game was hit hard, but what does Ned Yost have to do with Linebrink misplaying a chopper to the mound? Is he supposed to rush out and field it himself? I mean, really.
Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

I personally don't blame Yost for the way he
managed tonights game.  I agreed with the calls he made.  Unlike other games, I thought he put his team in position to win a tight game, which is really all you can ask.

I do blame him for the fact that this is a team with above average talent that is under .500 5/6 of the way through the season.  Maybe they'll right the ship and finish 5-10 games above .500.  Maybe that's as good as they are.  But I don't believe they're a sub .500 club and right now that's how they're playing...

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Aug 28, 2007 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh no...
... not the "he can't pitch or hit for them" canard.

If we're honest here, it's not just the poorly fielded ball. It's a series of moves that lead to a guy having to make a tough play to get the last out of that inning.

It's leaving Suppan in to hit with Hardy on first and one out in the seventh. If you're going to yank Soup if he allows a runner, why leave him into hit? May as well get a pinch hitter up.

It's taking Suppan out at all. Many have made the argument that taking him out after the Floyd HBP was a mistake as well. Soup seemed to be on his game.

It's IBBing the pinch hitter, Ward, to get to Soriano. Soriano's grounded into eight DPs in 138 ABs this season. Was that a smart move? Now, there's one out with two men on and the top of the order coming up? Is that something you want? And guess what -- Pie, running for Ward, scored.

Regardless, it could be a gork, a flare, a frozen rope, a screamer, a wind-blown double, it doesn't matter. That seventh inning was more of the same ... and it's becoming exhausting to watch and to explain away after.

"You could give the man in second place an extra 180 home runs and he still wouldn't catch Aaron in total bases."

Suppan
"If you're going to yank Soup if he allows a runner, why leave him into hit?"

Because he's on his game, as you said, and if he sails through the inning you're that much closer to the end.

Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Aug 28, 2007 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

But then...
... if he's on his game, you don't take him out just because he hits Floyd.

And if he isn't on his game, if you're going to yank him as soon as someone gets on base, why do you waste an out in the top of the seventh by having Suppan sacrifice? That doesn't makes sense.

If you're going to pull him at the first sign of trouble -- why have a relief pitcher inherit runners? Why not just have Linebrink start the seventh?

And if you have inherited runners, why not bring in Shouse, who has been lights out with inherited runners?

The more I think about it, the more the four-run seventh makes me angry.

Hmm
"And if you have inherited runners, why not bring in Shouse, who has been lights out with inherited runners?"

If you're general usage is to be brought into jams to retire a lefty and you're a lefty, shouldn't you be by definition good at dealing with inherited runners? I'm a Shouse fan and think he's a decent option, but bringing him in to face a number of righties isn't a great situation for him.

But when does a series of blown games
in the late innings become more than something that just happened that we shouldn't get too worked up about?  I see what you're saying.  There certainly was some luck involved in the Cubs 7th, but there's been plenty of games where we've blown leads that didn't consist of a couple of infield hits.  To continue to say, well it's just one inning, or just one game, or just a couple of infield hits that could have been outs fairly easily defies logic.  For months now I've heard how things statistically will balance back out and this team will go on at least a mini-winning streak.  And it made some sense when I heard it, but it's getting late, and we're still waiting.  The infield hits may not constitute a fundamental flaw, but that this team consistantly finds ways to lose certainly appears to be.  The method may have been slightly different tonight, but the outcome was the same.  And no one is going to convince me that Linebrink didn't break under the pressure of that inning tonight.  Maybe he had some bad luck, but it clearly got to him.  A calm, clear thinking pitcher doesn't misplay that ball on the mound and gets out of the inning with the game tied.  He panicked, plain and simple.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Aug 28, 2007 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Alright
Let's assume that blowing leads is some sort of repeatable "skill." Who does the responsibility rest on? Is it the bullpen, for not executing? Is it the manager, for putting the wrong guys in situations to succeed? I guess what I'm getting at is that when something goes wrong, it's easy to say, oh, someone else should have been in there and blame the manager. On the other hand, the only bullpen guy who seems to get flak when he fails is Turnbow (and, I guess, Cordero). Even tonight, the criticism seems more towards Yost than Linebrink (and maybe I'm biased and failed to read the thread above close enough).

I'm no fan of Yost's bullpen usage in general, but I don't think he's at fault all fourteen times they've blown a 3-0 lead. So, that in mind, would firing Yost at some earlier point in the season have changed the outcome tonight, or last week, or the week before? If not, what do you change in the bullpen? I think Melvin did what he could to upgrade the bullpen at the trade deadline and it hasn't worked out as planned. So, going forward, what's the plan? Try and trade for some veteran reliever that's cleared waivers? Let Seth McClung pitch more innings that have gone to Linebrink, Spurling, et al?

Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Aug 28, 2007 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't have any trouble with trying McClung
in tight games in the 7th or 8th at this point.  We need to find out what we have in him for next year anyway.  Linebrink has coughed up 3 leads in his last 3 appearances.

And it's not a repeatable skill.  I know it's tempting to statistically analyze those blown games to find some underlying cause that can be attacked by using a different approach.  But I don't think it's that simple with this group.  These are still human beings after all and hitters can press and pitchers can tighten up when certain game situations come up, particularly when they're similar to those where those same players have recently failed repeatedly.  That may not be very satisfying, but it doesn't mean it can't be true.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Aug 28, 2007 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Jay...
... I agree with you on this. Not all of them have been Ned's fault per se.

Like I said in another post, no matter what button Yost pushes, the button doesn't work. Nothing has lately... I have feeling a bullpen of Gossage, Fingers and Eckersley in their collective prime would find a way to shovel a win into the loss column right now.

Has it been bad luck, bad timing, bad play, bad decision making?

It's been a little bit of everything, but it's added up to one game under .500 and third place in the standings.

Disagreeble prick
:D

I believe this should fall after the two "Not at All" comments, and everyone knows that punch line hits on the third.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

And that's the point.
As I've tried to say a few times now, I thought he actually managed a pretty good game tonight.  There are other games we've blown where I was upset with Ned's decisions, but not tonight.

That said, this isn't a team that should be a game below .500.  There's too much talent here for that.  If Ned doesn't get them to play to his potential, which I think is what's happened, then he needs to go.

By the way,
read my post below on what I thought of Yost's management calls in tonight's game.  Maybe it's more clear below than it was above.  I'd like to see Ned go, but I don't believe I've ever called for him to be canned in season, which would have been counter-productive in my opinion.

God Damnit
You can now officially count me on the Fire Ned Yost Bandwagon.

Yeah, I blame Ned for everything tonight
He yanked Suppan after the first baserunner in the seventh, that's a black mark. He stuck with Linebrink even after a cheap infield hit, another black mark. He probably distracted Linebrink during his misplay, so another black mark. I hate him too.

Sarcasm noted.
I thought pulling Suppan was probably the right call, though it was a tough one.  Ned has certainly left his starters in only to see them collapse in that situation before.  This time he came with the hook which looked to me like the right call.

Unfortunately, Linebrink gave up a couple of runs and then blew his chance to get out of the inning 3-3.  But I agree that's not Yost's fault.  I don't blame him for not going to Shouse in the 7th either, which would have only resulted in Pinella bringing a righty off the bench.  I liked Gross pinch hitting for Hall a lot. I've been looking for him to make that kind of call all year.

I still don't like Yost, but I thought he managed a pretty good game tonight and put his players in position to win, but they didn't get it done.  I haven't said that often because I don't really be it's been true most of the season.  But I think it was true tonight.

Slight disagreement
I think Yost panicked.  With Suppan going well and Linbebrink struggling, he should have stuck with Supp at least one more batter.

However, what was Supp doing throwing the inside pitch to Floyd, anyway?  He'd looked awful on two off-speed pitches.  You've got to try that pitch again...out of the strike zone away to get him to chase.  Awful pitch selection there.  Maybe Floyd ends up getting a hit, but you can't lose him with a HBP after having him 0-2 and then 1-2.

It sounds like that will take you
right back into the "Estrada/pitch selection" argument again.
If A-Rod hits A-Bombs, does Fielder hit F-Bombs? It's dumb I know....

i just can't understand yost's comments though
in his postgame interview he talked about how he was happy with linkebirnk's effort and he gave it his all so by proxy he did a good job. i can understand he wants to stand up to his player with the media and may say differently behind closed doors. but just once i'd like to hear him talk about results. and stop using cliche' lines like we have to play and battle ect ect.
if hard effort doesn't = results, then what's the point?

Nearly a month ago now...
.... Yost admitted in a press conference that he didn't know what to say to his players anymore.  I doubt he knows what to say to the media at this point either.  Everything's been said a hundred times since this team started to fall apart.

Got to say my main concern is quickly becoming how this season might carry over to the next.  It happens, in sports, though it's not quantifiable and amenable to statistical analysis, and thus many baseball fans don't like to talk about it.  The best players on this team are really just kids.  Someone's got to get their minds right before next April, and I'm not so sure that a guy who admits he doesn't know what to say to them is the guy for that job.

i know he's older...
but i'd love to see the brewers bring in davey johnson. he's won whereever he's gone and has lots of experience

we have now
scored 621 and allowed 637. pretty much lines up with their record. Maybe its time we realize this team is not as good we all thought

I think
I think it has only happened 5 time where a team gave up more run then it scored and won the division
