johnny estrada

I just heard on the cubs broadcast last night that the cubs announcers said Johnny Estrada had a 10% throw out percent. WOW didn't know he was that bad. Is he worth the money and the slow base running to keep around? I remember when they traded for Henry Blanco that they wanted a defensive cather. Wouldn't that be better than what we have now?

I'll go ahead and take that
No.

now that we've gotten that out of the way, go ahead and compare him to a "defensive" catcher... say Brad Ausmus:

Estrada: .278/.298(really? Wow).404, 104 h, 32 xbh, 155 TB, 57 SB allowed, 11 CS

Ausmus: .231.312(again really?)/.313, 74 h, 19 xbh, 100 TB, 44 SB allowed, 15 CS

The usual caveats apply with pitchers holding runners and the like, but I don't think those extra 4 CS, and 13 not running against are worth sacrificing the 55 TB.

i agree
Catchers are certainly hard to come by, but estrada has been a definite disappointment both defensively and offensively.  His approach at the plate is disgraceful... it's not so much that he doesn't walk, but he doesn't even take pitches.

All in all, Melvin's moves have turned out very badly this year: Estrada, Suppan (Marquis has had a better year, is younger, and cost half as much), Dessens, Linebrink -- pretty awful.  I'm still happy to have Melvin over the long haul, but you have to place blame where it belongs.

calling a game
Does anyone know whether the starter's woes are worse when Estrada is catching?

Member of the Wisconsin Hip Hop Group of the Year Catalyst did a great study on that.

JUST ANOTHER
reason to hate Estrada.
  • Poor batting - Check
  • Poor pitch calling - Check
  • Poor defense - Check
Why isn't Miller starting?  Or Mike Rivera?  Or Vinny Rottino?
Hey Ned! Ever heard of small ball? Or are your balls too small?

And another thing...
Just because you trade for a guy doesn't mean he has to be the starter...Especially when he's sucking ass right now...

It's not like you have him $42million. =/

Estrada
hasn't thrown out a runner in 25 attempts or something absurd like that, it's sad.

non-tender is the night
non-tender Estrada, let Miller walk, and sign Jorge Posada.

JKs!

I'm all about Rottino getting some time in for 2008.  Some major Major League time in.  Like 110 starts worth of Major League time.

Michael Barrett anyone?  Oh right, everyone's so concerned about "clubhouse cancers."  He's at least an upgrade in offense, the same in defense, but probably too expensive on the open market.

Question:

Are the Brewers going to make a run at Schilling?

by baumann on Aug 30, 2007 11:19 AM CDT reply actions

Let's just trade for Matt Tupman
He can't really hit lefties down in AAA so maybe we will have to platoon him behind the plate but dang is he clutch, hitting .333 with RISP. :)
