Other Reasons for the Team's Slump?

We've dissected and trisected and inspected the team's slumping play to no end lately. I haven't seen any of these guys listed as reasons so I figured I had better throw them out there so every possible angle is covered. If I miss one, feel free to add to the list!

Brady Clark

  • Glaring bald spot no longer confronts team with own mortality, spurring more desire to win.
  • Center fielders playing at normal depth confuses pitchers.
  • Opposing pitchers no longer are distracted by smirking when seeing his name at top of lineup.
  • Jorge de la Rosa
  • Entire bullpen too focused on not being worst pitcher on team; clarity removed since trade.
  • Yost now uses all pitchers on staff regularly.
  • His trade led to Graffanino arbitration shocker in offseason.
  • Chad Moeller
  • Pitchers no longer feel bad for him and don't feel the need to throw well to make him look good at something.
  • Offense no longer self-conscious that they haven't hit for cycle lately.
  • Team depressed Wisconsin Dental Association missed obvious player for sports/dentist commercial when he was with team.
  • Doug Davis
  • No longer teaching everyone lessons on why free baserunners are bad. Player(s) acquired for him teaching opposite lesson.
  • Team used to long games due to 3-ball counts; offense doesn't fire up expecting to win it just after the four-hour mark.
  • No one left on team who bats right-handed but throws left-handed.
  • Ben Hendrickson
  • No longer sponge for bad pitching karma.
  • No longer keeps Prince company on the "dad-has-issues" list for the team.
  • Lack of true AAAA pitcher makes current staff nervous about own futures.
  • Joe Crawford (see here)
  • Angry at not having own page on Brewers.com like those other coaches, sabotages video scouting reports in retaliation.
  • Lack of media coverage of "Digital Media Coordinator" causes bizarro continuum centered around ballclub.
  • Like I said, anyone else you can think of?

    One thing about "the slump"
Actually, "slump" is a fun word to say.  Slump slump slump.

The problem I have with calling it a slump is that we've been playing pretty bad baseball (with a few stretches excepted) for what, 3 months or so.

I imagine there's a fine line between a good team the slumps its way through the year and a bad team.

    Yeah...but
Slump flows better than "continued bad play compounded by managerial inefficiency." :)

    My theory
Is that Yost is trying to maintain the memory of the '82 Brewers by not letting the '07 Brewers succeed.

    Man I hated
Every single one of those players you mentioned.
    If A-Rod hits A-Bombs, does Fielder hit F-Bombs? It's dumb I know....

    Come on.
Brady Clark was fun to watch for a while.  He tried anything to get on base.  Sort of like Fernando Vina without the pesky talent.  I just couldn't believe it took the league a season and a half to realize he never tried to pull anything, he stood with a foot outside the batters box, and he enjoyed sticking various body parts over the plate so the pitch would hit him.

It was always fun, at least to me, to see the confused look on the face of the pitchers when Clark would get his 2nd or 3rd hit of the game.  Not to mention the opponent's mound visits that appeared to include some variation of the theme:  "you're getting killed by Brady Clark.  Brady freaking Clark."  Even the umpires appeared to get annoyed by his relative success near the end of his run with the Brewers, or so it appeared.  I've never heard of an umpire telling a player other than Clark that he was "bush league", for instance.

I'd have to add Dana Eveland...
after all, Prince must have found it much more difficult to keep his weight down after his primary donut competition was shipped (har, har) out of town.

    Dana
Did anyone notice that Dana Eveland made a start in AZ last night?  Dbacks staked him a 8-0 lead and he was gone in the top of the 3rd when it was 8-5.
I turned on the game saw the name on the back of his jersey and laughed and then called my dad to laugh about it with him.

BTW, lay off the Chad Moeller jokes...
he'll probably be the Brewers' manager in 15 years or so. ;) Seriously though, I wouldn't be surprised to see him surface as a TV analyst if not as a coach...he always seemed pretty intelligent in his interviews and he's got the "crappy catcher with defensive credentials only" pedigree that seems to be all the rage for the colour commentary spots.

by Zeyes on Sep 2, 2007 10:18 AM CDT   0 recs

    Yeah
but the pronblem is those same credentials seem to qualify him for a managerial spot as well.....

    Ode to spring.

I like the snow as much as anybody who likes snow. I even don't dread shoveling. Still, I find myself anxious for spring.

Why?

I can't wait to play hookey from work or school and make it to a game at Miller Park. I want to have the money I save now go to a goal other than just tuition and bills. I want to sit behind home plate and watch Brauny hit a monstrous homer.

And that, my friends, is all I want for Christmas - spring.
