Braun's heritage

I've seen Braun referred to here and in the Journal/Sentinel that Braun is Jewish. However, that isn't entirely true. It said in the JS today that his father is Jewish and his mother is Catholic. Therefore, to Jews, he's not Jewish. According to Judaism, that's passed down through the mother. For example, I myself have Jewish "blood" in me, but I wouldn't be considered a Jew, but my dad would, as his mother's mother was Jewish. Just wanted to point that out to those of you who didn't know...

Interesting
Frankly, I never understood what all the brouhaha was about regarding his heritage, unless his parents were Cub fans.

I know
I expect he and his parents to renounce their evil ways before he's on the team.

not Jewish?
does that mean I can't use the "Happy Braunakkah" joke this holiday season?

You know what
It don't matter.  The guy can mash.  This just means we should call him The Razor, as opposed to the Hebrew Hammer.

I'm pretty sure
...that he's referred to himself as Jewish. Therefore, he is Jewish. It only matters because "Hebrew Hammer" is a nice little wink to Hank Aaron's Milwaukee years.
He's extremely quick and good.

Hebrew Hammer...
...could also be a reference to Judas Maccabeaus who "smote" the mighty Roman Empire and who was nicknamed "The Hammer."  On second thought, Eric, you're probably right.

By all means...
Still use the "Happy Braunakkah" joke!

My only concern
is that he's going to miss Saturday's game because it's the holiest day of the year in Judaism, Yom Kippur.  If he gets to play ball while I'm in Temple, I won't be happy.

Prepare to be unhappy
Here's the quote (from this article):
Yom Kippur, the Jewish holiday of the Day of Atonement, begins just before sundown on Sept. 21, and some wondered whether that meant Brewers third baseman Ryan Braun would sit out two games. He cleared it up on Friday. "I am half Jewish, and I am not Orthodox," Braun said. "So I never grew up celebrating the holidays. I'm going to play."

That son of a bitch
Well, at least my sins will be atoned for.  Though I do forgive his defensive game, it would be nice if God did as well.

but . . .
if Braun apologizes to the fans for his defensive sins, doesn't that mean that all is good?  I'm not clear on the Jewish take on atonement, or if it varies from sect to sect.

...unless
Ned decides to bench him to put in Counsell.

That Rottino guy might need some playing time, too.

If he misses Saturday,
That's all the more reason that he shouldn't have been out of the lineup this past Sunday.
If A-Rod hits A-Bombs, does Fielder hit F-Bombs? It's dumb I know....

careful, there
being jewish may not be much of a big deal in baseball anymore, but wanting some other dude's abs ...well, I wouldn't shout that from the rooftops. :)
Weird, but not weird.
