If they put a couch in the dugout...

New quote from Ned from Jsonline.
 http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=655433

"If they put a couch in the dugout, we'd get it right every time." - Brewers manager Ned Yost, noting that second-guessers watching at home always make the right move.

Ok...my response is

if they put a couch in the dugout Ned would be more comfortable sleeping during the games

someone's got to have a better one that that....

If they put a couch in the dugout...
The second baseman or shortstop on the opposing team could run over, take a quick nap, wake up, stretch, climb the dugout stairs, roll the ball to first with his gloved hand and STILL get Estrada on the double play.

It is funny cause it is true
that one actually made me laugh out loud.

alternately, If they put a couch in the dugout...

the runner at first base could take a quick u-turn to the brewers dugout, take a nap and still make it to second before Estrada was able to throw him out

c'mon now...
clearly the couch would be for Estrada himself. He's got the shortest way back to the dugout after the defensive half-innings and he also spends the least time at-bat on the team. Coincidence?

i like this line
"I spent all that time in Atlanta," said Yost, who was on manager Bobby Cox's staff for 12 years. "We're not doing anything different than they ever did.

hmmmm, i would like to see atlantas record after the allstar break during those 12 years

Here we go...
Year   Pre-Break   PreW%  Post-Break  PostW% Change
        W    L              W    L
2002    56   32    .636     45   27   .625   -.011
2001    49   38    .563     39   36   .520   -.043
2000    52   36    .591     43   31   .581   -.010
1999    55   34    .618     48   25   .658    .040
1998    59   29    .670     47   27   .635   -.035
1997    57   30    .655     44   31   .587   -.069
1996    54   33    .621     42   33   .560   -.061
1995    44   25    .638     46   29   .613   -.024
1994    52   33    .612     16   13   .552   -.060
1993    50   39    .562     54   19   .740    .178
1992    49   37    .570     49   27   .645    .075
1991    39   40    .494     55   28   .663    .169

Good at the beginning (especially if you give them the benefit of the doubt for 1994 being cut off) and then they lost it except for 1999.

For the curious, the Brewers' numbers this year are 49-39 (.557) and 20-28 (.417).

well yost was sort of right
they dont do anything differnt then the braves, as they play worse in terms of record after the break, however, playing worse for the braves is still a .618 winning percentage in the 2nd half.

TheJay
I was looking at your website and saw that you adjusted Braun's Ab's to 422.  Today, I was looking at MLB.com Stats and they have Casey Kotchman on their leaderboard with 378 Ab's.  Have they made a mistake, or am I misunderstanding your analysis?

by Zel123 on Sep 3, 2007 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

It's plate apperances
Kotchman has 378 AB, but 427 PA so he qualifies.
