Game Thread # 153 Brewers (78-74) at Braves (80-73)

"I don't say these things because I believe in the 'brute' nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he's exhausted on the field of battle - victorious."
-Vince Lombardi

I thought it'd be good idea to bring some Lombardi luck to the Brewers.
So, I'm guessing that since the Brewers lost to Jeff Bennett that they'll definately beat the likes of Tim Hudson.  Right?  That's how this team plays.
Anyways, Hudson is coming off a complete game shutout against Washington but we're not Washington.  I expect us to knock Hudson out around the 5th after he's give up three bombs and six runs.
For the Brewers, they counter with Villanueva.  In his last 21 innings, including a 3 inning save at Arizona, he's only given up 3 runs.  I like our chances tonight.  Here's my guess at the lineup:

2b Weeks
Ss Hardy
3b Braun
1b Fielder
Rf Hart
Lf Jenkins
C Estrada
Cf Hall

Go Brewers!!

"A baseball blog without a game thread is in danger of deteriorating into a medieval study hall." --- Vince Lombardi, sort of. [bumped]

Whoa...whoa...WHOA.....
Who the hell is C.F. Hall?
If A-Rod hits A-Bombs, does Fielder hit F-Bombs? It's dumb I know....

I don't know
how can a brewers lineup these days not include counsell and dillon starting....

I love that projected lineup
It would actually convince me that Yost is trying to win the game...

ANYONE HAVE
Any stats on how we've done in each series?  I swear we almost always lose the 1st game in every series then comeback to win the series.

Anyone have stats on that?

Hey Ned! Ever heard of small ball? Or are your balls too small?

by CATALYST on Sep 21, 2007 1:33 PM CDT   0 recs

I don't have the exact numbers
But I know we have only been swept once and that was sometime in June.

We don't always win the series, but we never go down three.  It's been critical to our success in slump times.

by MunichBrats on Sep 21, 2007 1:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought
We were swept by the Cards at home in August.

by drezdn on Sep 21, 2007 2:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

When we don't get swept...
Don't we usually lose the 1st game and win the next 2?

So anyway
Here's the record in three-game series, which doesn't really apply to this series, but whatever. The team has lost the first game of a series 22 times against 17 wins by my count. Of those 22 losses, seven times the team came back to win the next two games and the series. Fifteen times they didn't. In September they went "LWW" against Houston, at Cincinnati, and against Cincinnati again the next weekend.

Wow. I thought we came back more often than that... Shitty for us.

Can't believe Maholm is on the mound again
In his last start, the Astros ROCKED him WITHOUT Berkman in the lineup.  He was returning from a back injury and he can't be fully healed.  I guess maybe the Pirates didn't want the pitching nanny police yelling at them for not starting their regulars, but Maholm has to still be hurt.

by MunichBrats on Sep 21, 2007 1:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why was he in there anyway?!
He's a young pitcher! They should be throwing their grittiest veterans out there in a pennant race! He might not have started a game all season, but Shawn Chacon has a lot of experience. </cubtard>

You heard it here first
Rookie of the Year goes to the talented Milwaukee Brewer...Joltin' Joe Dillon!

(Comeback Player of the Year also applies.)

I'm just kidding...I don't think give out ROY awards to outfielders who trip over their own feet.  I think Ryan was sweating it a little, though.

Notes from the AL
I would pay to see Kansas City face Boston at the end of the season next year and have this guy spin a shutout to keep the Red Sox out of the playoffs.

He's starting tonight against the Tigers. In other starting pitcher news, why Baltimore why?

Tigers (wrong)
Angels
Yankees

NL:
Mets
Brewers
Padres

But the gritty veteran Counsell wins out over Rickie (box here).

Counsell, 2B
Hardy, SS
Braun, 3B
Fielder, 1B
Hart, RF
Jenkins, LF
Estrada, C
Hall (new September callup? :), CF
Villanueva, P

no
three games hes hit a home run.

by baseballdan1092 on Sep 21, 2007 4:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I forgot
The first one... Apparently he has never had a hit against Hudson... But Counsell should never be in the leadoff spot.

by drezdn on Sep 21, 2007 4:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Does Ned's mind work this way?
Rickie vs. Hudson: 0-8, 3 K
Counsell vs. Hudson: 6-17, 2 2B, 1 HBP

I wonder if he thinks 25 at bats spread over two players is relevant to anything.

Justification
So, what if he says "Well, we don't want Rickie to wear down and if we have to sit him, we might as well do it against a guy he's never had a hit off of." How many lashes does that deserve?

BA and the Rock have lost hope.  They just spent the last two at bats talking about how lucky the Brewers are to be set up with quality young arms and bats for the next few years, and how some playoff teams have to take their shot this year because their players are older and won't be any good in the near future.

Yost's brother
This guy either works for the Brewers, is related to Ned, or both.  He even pulls out the "couch" line in one of his answers.  He knows more than all of the fans because he sits in the press box at the games.  What a jerk off.

He answered 2 of my questions...
Q: Jessica Simpson of Los Angeles, CA -  I was wondering what the injury status of Manny Parra is?

A: Rick Braun - He's nearly ready but as I just said above, he won't be used in a game that's not decided. A question for you Ms. Simpson: Do you lip sync. And could you be attracted to an old, stocky writer?

Q: Kevin Bacon of Los Angeles, CA - Should the Brewers spend huge money on Cordero this off-season? Will Jenkins be back?

A: Rick Braun - It will cost huge money to re-sign Cordero. But if you want to win it, you have to have a closer. As for Jenkins, my guess is no.

by Jamie in LA on Sep 21, 2007 7:42 PM CDT   0 recs

but not the one i was excited about...
Q:  Who would win in the sausage race between you, Michael Hunt, Tom Hardicourt, Vic Feuerherd, and Andy Baggot?

by Jamie in LA on Sep 21, 2007 7:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the guy really is a jerk
Do you understand that if he was going to pinch-run for Bush he would have already pinch-hit for him instead? He was going to pitch in the seventh, so once you let him hit, you let him run. Yes, the way it turned out looks strange. But Bush is a guy who's in pretty good shape and not really a slow runner. The ball didn't make it to the wall, it was cut off in the gap. Only a select few fast runners score on it.

what a condescending tone
