Game Thread #157

Counsell: War's over, man. Yost dropped the big one.
Prince: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Braun: Germans?
Hardy: Forget it, he's rolling.
Prince: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard]
Prince: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[runs out of clubhouse, alone; then returns]
Prince: What the f*** happened to the Brewers I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Prince, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Piniella, he's a dead man! Soriano, dead! Zambrano...
Braun: Dead! Prince's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Prince: We're just the guys to do it.
Counsell: Let's do it.
Prince: LET'S DO IT!

Star-divide

So the outlook is rather bleak for the Brewers, but it still only takes one streak and little luck to win the division.  I'm not very lucky so I doubt this game thread will help them too much, but I am a good jinx, and I'm currently sitting in Chicago.  Hopefully my thought beams will help us pick up a game tonight.

No doubt!

AND BTW: Cubs matchups this week.
Lilly (15-7)      Willis (9-15)
Marquis (12-8)      Barone (1-3)
Trachsel (7-10)  Olsen (9-15)
Hill (10-8)      Arroyo (9-14)
Zambrano (17-13) Harang (16-5)
Lilly (15-7)      Bailey (3-2)

Hey Ned! Ever heard of small ball? Or are your balls too small?

by CATALYST on Sep 25, 2007 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

I know it is a long shot right now but...
I really like the pitching match ups for the last 6 games.  It looks like no Peavy unless they throw him on three days rest which didn't go so well the last time they tried it.  We have hit Maddux pretty well recently and Cassel and Tomko are nothing special.

On the other hand, the Cubs have to face Willis, Arroyo, Harang, and an interesting pitcher in Homer Bailey.  The Reds have played well against the Cubs this year and hit Zambrano very well who is supposed to be matched up with Harang.

We probably have to go 6-0 to even tie the Cubs but I could definitely see the Cubs going 3-3 on this road trip.

Let me ask you this
A pitcher has a 5.32 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.

Is that a pitcher you have to face or a pitcher you get to face?

One of the things that makes me made about the media is the constant hyping of Willis even though he has slipped into at best a 4 or 5 starter.  If you are saying they have to face Willis, then say they have to face Barone too because he has a 5.30 ERA and 1.63 WHIP.

by MunichBrats on Sep 25, 2007 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be a bargain for somebody
I think Willis has just stopped caring in Miami.  Well, maybe that's not what I'm looking for...I think he still competes, but that it's hard to motivate yourself to function at the highest level when it's apparent that the highest levels of the organization just don't care about winning.

If Willis could find himself somewhere else next year, I think he'd have a shot at comeback player of the year.

by Marty McSuperFly on Sep 25, 2007 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I'D GIVE UP
Someone in the minors for Willis...  Maddux can turn him around too, right?

Or how about straight South-Paw-Swap?  Cappy for Willis?

Hey Ned! Ever heard of small ball? Or are your balls too small?

by CATALYST on Sep 25, 2007 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Not likely
Willis signed a 1-year deal for $4.35 million this year, plus $200k in bonuses that he probably didn't hit, for his first year of salary arbitration.  He's got five years of service following this year, so I don't know if that means another year of arbitration, or free agency.  I know that if Jason Marquis, Jeff Suppan and Ted Lilly can make around $10 million per year that Willis will not be cheap to obtain, but he may be worth it if he can become what he was in his 1st and 3rd years.

by Marty McSuperFly on Sep 25, 2007 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Well
The Marlin defense is not helping his numbers.  The Cubs have preformed badly against lefties.  His strong hitting should help him some.  Is he overrated, probably.  Could he still beat the Cubs, definitely.

Ya know
If this race was closer between the cubs and Brewers, I bet you would have cubs fans complaining about how that ump in the sandeigo game was baiting Milton Bradley just so bradley would came after him and would get hurt just before they play us

I feel good
about tonight.  I may have said this before, but at the very least we can get 2 more wins and get a winning record for the first time in 15ish years.  I probably would have taken that at the beginning of the year before the 24-10 record.  In perspective, it would be a victory again in my book.  Of course, we were 14 games over, so by then I would never expect to be at just 80 wins right now.  But I'll take it, so long as the Cubs don't make any noise in the playoffs.

"Ned is safe," said Attanasio, on hand at Miller Park for the Brewers' game against St. Louis.

Yeah.
There doesn't appear to be any good way to take it.  What's particularly troubling is the casual way he threw it out there.  There was nothing about it that appeared to be intended as a rip on the player, which is probably why the guy who posted it didn't think there was anything offensive about it.  But it's frightening to me when people still refer to or define others by their ethnicity, as if that's the only thing they need to consider.  Maybe I'm just naive, but I like to think that sort of thinking has become increasingly rare.  It's a little jarring when you run into it like that, but then, because of my own heritage and ethnicity, I'm not exactly in a situation or location where I'm likely to run into it often.

Ned just said a whole string of bad words...
Rock reports that Larussa accused the Brewers of throwing at Pujols, and Sveum looked like he was going to go throw down with Tony right there in the dugout.  I don't think I've ever seen Sveum that mad.

by Bigdogg2002 on Sep 25, 2007 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

Why on God's green earth
would anyone be throwing at Pujols there?  Pujols spun his head out of the way, and held it there for a moment or two, for some reason.  That might have made Larussa think it was closer than it actually was.  But why would you drill Pujols up 9-1 with no prior incidents to provoke it?  Unless Larussa thought it was payback for Hart getting drilled late in yesterday's game.  Kinda gives more insight into the way Larussa thinks than anything else.
