Why the lack of activity??

There is nothing I love more than reading about the Brewers. I love this site and recommend it to all my fellow brewer faithful.  I see more discussion on pretty much every other NL central teams pages.  I think we need more contributions and links on this site. Multiple discussions across many websites are being targeted about the brewers and I would like this site to reflect that. Personally I respect the formulas and all of the (prospectus) material, but I find myself reluctant to join in conversation because I feel this site is just about projections, formulas and not the GAME.  I am a simple baseball fan, I love the game.  I would just like to see more involvement, more passion and less numbers.

More passion, less numbers?
Do you so quickly forget "I'd warm up with her anytime"?

Speaking of Hardy
He's asking for 3.05 million, and Bush is asking for 3 mil in their arbitration cases.

time
there's plenty of time to talk about the game when there's a game going on.

unfortunately this is the "dull" period i guess where not much is going on.

during the season it's an awesome place man. and all you have to do is look at our game threads when ned yost puts in chris spurling in a high leverage situation.

yeah, that's right, we can combine stats with passion :)

I have been a daily visitor to this site for over a year now, I know what it can be like during the season, I guess I just have a bad case of withdrawl/anticipation+I posted that at 2 in the morning. :)

I too am getting anxious.
Don't confuse the stats for the lack of passion.  You have to understand that to those of us who obsess with numbers, it is because, as Bill James put it, Baseball statistics have language.  They are manipulable and predictive, and give us a way to look into the inner workings of the games and see the why, the how, not just the what in what is truly our first love.

Some of us choose to use the numbers to give historical reference like TheJay.  Others use them to be on the cutting edge of research like Jeff and Dixie.  I just use them to make my coworkers and friends look stupid in Fantasy leagues.  Whatever the reason, they feed our addictions for this great game.

Besides, between the anagrams and puns, you'll find some nice low-grade humor here.

As for links, we have pretty good coverage over BP, The Hardball Times, Baseball Think Factory, MLB.com, and Espin.  Where we are really hamstrung is that only 2 newspapers cover the Crew.  JS and the Wisconsin State Journal are the only papers I know of that have actual beat reporters.  The JS Blog by Haudricourt has given us more information than we've had in years.  But some things aren't worth linking, like Mark Atanasio supporting Hillary, or Gagne not attending the Winter Warm-Up.  And the day I link Mike Hunt is the day you can ban my ass.

Anyway, I hope that helps your understanding.

Bizarre
So the Reds have the best #4 and #5 pitchers in the NL Central, each going undefeated for the year?

Color me skeptical.

From the linked blog
It's been a busy offseason for most of the teams in the competitive NL West. Using my baseball simulator, I am having each NL West team go head to head against every other NL West team. Each team will play 1000 games, both home and away, against every other team, with their #1 starter facing the other teams #1 starter, with the same being done for the #2, #3, #4 and $5 starters. From this I will get an average winning percentage for each matchup. The totals are then added up and averaged, viewable in the table below, sorted from the top to bottom team. Rosters are still not 100% decided and I had to made some assumptions as to which 5th starter to use on some teams. The sim analysis is not taking into account, pitchers that are injury prone and won't likely make every start for their team, so there is some margin of error. During spring training I will run a more thorough sim test. This will do for now. Please leave comments if you feel like it.

So when shifted to our division, I guess the Reds' #4 and #5 starters did better against the rest of the NL Central's #4 and #5 guys, whoever they were assumed to be. Since starting depth isn't taken into account, that skews it badly - I'm sure I'd rather take the Brewers' sixth and seventh starters than the equivalent from any other team in the division.

mentioned
it was mentioned that this study was not taking into account depth beyond the #5 starter, nor was it trying to guess as to how many starts each pitcher was going to make (injury related stuff) and that stuff would be looked at more carefully during the latter part of spring training.  And for anybody else, keep in mind that this study measures.

Team A Offense + Team A Bullpen + Team A Starting pitcher VS Team B Offense + Team B Bullpen + Team B Starting pitcher.

It's always fun to get different people's takes
But it seems that you might as well focus on how each team's right fielders did when they hit it towards an opponents' right fielder, or how a team's middle relievers did while another team's middle relievers were in the game. Obviously you've done a lot of work, but it doesn't seem like comparing teams against each other based on how the guys in rotations match up against the equivalent pitchers on other teams is very telling. After all, how often do #1 guys face each other besides opening day? I can't imagine a huge percentage of each #1's 30+ starts are against another team's aces.

For example, in his first ten starts against NL Central teams last season, Aaron Harang faced Carlos Zambrano, Tony Armas Jr., Zambrano again, Chris Sampson, Kip Wells, Paul Maholm, Matt Albers, Maholm again, Wandy Rodriguez, and Todd Wellemeyer. A lot of those guys aren't exactly the cream of the crop and you'd expect him to win a bunch: he went 6-0.

It seems you're trying to see which players do well against their equivalents in each league, but if you're ranking teams it might be worthwhile to try and figure out who in other rotations an average team's ace faces and go from there. If #1 faces #1, say, 35% of the time, sim that matchup 1000 times and weight it against the, say, 28% percent of the time a #1 squares off against #2's. You could do the same for each team's #2, #3, and so on. That sounds like a lot of work, though, so I can see why it might not be possible to implement.

matchups
Thanks for the thoughtful comment.  You are right it's too much work and mathematically it isn't very significant.  It will come out the same, or within the margin of error.  Now if you are talking about going more than 5 deep in the rotation and weighting the number of starts each pitcher is projected to make based on injuries etc..., then you are right. :)

Capiche
You didn't understand how the study/sim worked (read carefully).  The Reds #4 and #5 starters did NOT go undefeated.  There were 2000 games played by the Reds #4 and #5 starters against each of the other teams in the leauges #4 and #5 starter.  If the Reds won a majority of those games I listed them as stronger in that matchup, even if it was .501 to .499.  I was just pointing out which pitchers from which teams did rather well in the study/sim.  Thanks for the reply.

Packers
is probably the biggest reason for relative quiet. Many people are sports fans who enjoy both sports and it was a great season. My SO asked me what I was thinking about a day after their loss and my answer was "go Brewers." I'm not big on post-mortems.

I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed in your desire for a discussion of play not dominated by stats. The best you can hope for is that it isn't overwhelming. IMO, most use stats to support their biases and beliefs. You can prove almost anything with stats. Statistics is a science and if it isn't used in a fashion where the numbers and the method of derivation is discussed, it is more religion.

Having said that, I really like this blog and its kin, other "sportsblogs." Easy to use, I guess. Some are quite active, but a few aren't.

So chat away swampbuck.

But Still...
Any mention of statistics to prove that a certain team is "better" than another will be countered with stats like this: 98% of a**holes use stats to make a pointless argument.

I'm fighting with my computer, but I can't seem to get my signature to become a hyperlink. You can still copy and paste the site name to check it out! You can have your chance to participate in an interview with Jonathan Lucroy, the Brewers' third-round draft pick from last year! Any thoughts on why the hyperlink won't work?

Hyperlink
Signatures here are kind of weird. I guess you can't just put http://whatever and get it to link, but if you make it html code it's easy to go over the 160 character limit.

Allow me to suggest you change your signature to this:

Come check out <a href="http://sportsnationjb.blogspot.com/">BrewersNation</a>, a new Brewers blog that keeps you up to date on ALL Brewers news and rumors.

That should make the name of your blog a link to it and still be under the character limit.
