Nunez and Kolb, oh my!

Yeah, so this is what passes for news these days.

Abraham Nunez was invited to camp.  He's on a minor league deal, so there's no reason to complain about picking up such a weakling; he's great insurance in case Counsell needs to start and we need a backup infielder.  Nunez got a whole lot of starts over Wes Helms in Philly the last couple of years, for whatever that's worth.

And the Red Sox, who have been very quiet this offseason, signed Dan Kolb.  I hope Danny likes Pawtucket as much as he liked Indianapolis.

depth
Melvin is consciously developing some depth for Milwaukee, which is a concept I've never experienced as a Brewers' fan. More veterans keep coming in to compete for starting jobs. Competition should bring out the best in these young and veteran players. Melvin's work has made a trade very possible, however. I'm looking forward to see what Melvin has up his sleeve.

1.

Thankfully, nobody has come in to compete for a starting job. There is only 1 job open (if you buy the implication that ned likes villy in the rotation) and that is bush/cappy/vargas for #5.

Nunez
I wonder if he'll ever slug above .300 in the majors again. :)

He doesn't need to
that is, if he keeps his OBP over .500.

Saaaaaaayyyy...

Why?!?
He's a waste of the NRI list.  Did they just do it to make Kendall feel a little better about his batting acumen?  I know it's no real commitment, but still.  This guy doesn't belong in a major league camp.

I think I feel a new poll coming on.

I disagree
Nunez took away many starts from Wes Helms last year at 3B for the Phillies. Sure, Wes Helms is not the best player on the face of the earth, but it shows that Nunez does have value with his speed and defensive skills. Hopefully, Nunez will provide us with some depth in the minor league system, if not contributing off the bench.

Nice rambling plug, by the way

Speaking of Ramblings
Al's line about Nunez sums it up:

"Like most backup infielders, he can't hit a lick, but as a switch-hitter, he adds the inability to hit from both sides!"

My dream move for next offseason
It'll never happen, but I want to see some team take Jason Neighborgall in the Rule 5 draft. You never know, he might just finally get his ERA below double digits next season!

I hear ya!
I've had my eye on him for a couple of seasons now.  What unbelievable numbers.  It just goes to show the lengths that teams will go to for an arm. . . .
Bob Gibson threw 9 pitches: "two different fastballs, two sliders, a curve, a change-up, knockdown, brushback, and hit-batsman."
