Postseason Open Thread
You may not know this, but they played baseball on the decks of the Santa Maria.
ALCS Game 3 starts us off at 3:37 CT. (Yet, somehow, it didn't occur to me to post the thread *before* that. Hm.) Lester and Garza opened the game; Garza is still in there, while the Rays have battered Lester and the Sox bullpen has taken over in the sixth.
NLCS Game 4 will get going at 7:22 CT--it's Joe Blanton against Derek Lowe.
Go Rays!

the Rays are a goin'
After the hype over Lester, you wouldn’t think this was possible.

Nice to see the Rays grab homefield back.
Now they no longer need to win in Boston nice
I have been wearing my old school(last years colors) Rays hat around town the last couple of days
Go Rays indeed

Gabe Kapler
The dodgers should sneak him into their dugout just in case a brawl breaks out in tonight’s game. I think he could kick any other major leaguers ass – torn latissimus dorsi and all. Of course thats only if you don’t count the retired Nolan Ryan.

Dodgers/Phillies
Anyone else just see the iPhone ad in the middle of the second inning? It featured the product showing a baseball highlight – specifically, Braun’s walk-off grand slam from the last week of the season.

Anyone else just see the Fan Post from hilbelink mentioning this very ad? It features exactly what I said above, just ten hours earlier. Whoops.

Is there still baseball on post-Brewers? I feel like a Bad Fan for saying this, but the sooner we get this World Series nonsense over with, the sooner we can start hatching plans for the 2009 Brewers.

Jamie Moyer, 5 years, $65 million
He was just a couple mislocated pitches away from a clutch postseason performance last night!
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Do you fear him picking up the next CC too?
How about Solomon Torres? Mike Cameron or Ray Durham? I think they were all pretty good moves.
You have to give the guy some credit.

I cannot wait to pay Cam 10 million next year
So he can strike out 3 to 4 times a game.

every GM has a tally of good and bad moves
we all have the advantage of hindsight. Heck, Suppan could actually be decent over the next two years. But Yost is another story. I’d love to hear an explanation for his devotion to that guy.

I know the K's were painful
but he was still an above avg. defensive CF and had above avg. power/OPS numbers. Better than any other option we had. The fact that we will most likely exercise his option this year shows that.

Do you know how the reply button works?
What is your determination that it is “most likely” based on?

Just the fact that he is an above avg. CF and we don't have a great prospect coming up.
Most people here would also agree. Gwynn is possible, but we lose all run production, power numbers. Probably not worth it for .20-.25 points better average.

You are right about Yost – thats a little tougher to see his reasons. But I would say that before our late Aug/September meltdown (not counting the final seven games), the brewers were in control of the wild card and still in contention to win the division over the cubs – despite Yost unpopularity. Its tough to fire a manager when the team is winning.
When we fell apart at the beginning of sept. that put them in a tough position where they either stick with him since it was so late in the season or fire him with just a few games left. Obviously they made their choice to get rid of him.

TGjr could increase run production. You add a left handed bat. You save about ten percent of the payroll which could pay for another starter.

Why not pick Corey Patterson or Tike Redman?
They’d be cheap and are left handed “bats” like Gwynn.

You’d be downgrading in OBP, slugging, and defense. Cam’s offensive VORP would be about 25 this year if you prorate it to include the 25 game suspension. If we expect Gwynn to be like Kendall offensively he’s probably almost right at replacement level. That’s already a 2.5 win downgrade, without counting Cam’s superior defense.
The second part of the comment depends on what you mean, though I disagree either way. If you mean “starting pitcher” by starter, that’s somewhat understandable but you’re still downgrading the offense by quite a bit. If you mean another starting position player, can you find an upgrade at any of our positions that costs about $10 mil, won’t cost us a player, and is only invested in for 1 year, and can upgrade the team at that position by more than 2.5 wins? I doubt it.

OBP and defense?
I don’t buy it. Cam’s defense is obviously declining. He had a hot month.
You do understand that VORP is a concept that is an attempt at an estimate. Has anyone ever measured its reliability or validity? Is it “extremely accurate,” getting close 2 out of 3 times the way PECOTA is?
The team is going to need more starting pitchers. The idea of Suppan plus Bush plus mystery scrap heap guy almost certainly guarantees a rebuilding year. If that is what the plan is, there is no reason to sign Cameron.

Gwynn’s AAA line was .277/.330/.332/.662
Cam’s MLB line was .243/.331/.477/.808
TG’s MLE line was .242/.296/.279/.575
So you’re saying they should go with an obviously worse player if they think it’s a rebuilding year? That MLE would be historically bad, and its not like TGJ is an extreme asset in the field. So when you say “OBP and defense? I don’t buy it”… even if their defense is about the same, Cameron is at least .200-.300 OPS points better.
And I do realize VORP isn’t that great. Care to suggest a better measure? I would make the arguement that Cam—→ TG would be about a 3 win downgrade, and I have numbers to back that up. If you can use that 10 mil to find a 4 win upgrade, go for it but I doubt you can.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.

if a measure isn't that great don't give it weight
and you compound it by using MLE. C’mon, what’s the reliability and validity of that measure? Does it come close half the time?
What is the reliability and validity of VORP? Does that exist somewhere?
And Cam’s defense is declining. For some reason you think TGjr is a bad defender. Your assumption could be incorrect.
You also put a lot of weight in slugging percentage. This is the Brewers.
You don’t like TGjr and assume he does and will suck… fine. Extrapolating that to 3 wins is based on a lot of crapshoot stats and negative assumptions.

You're right
It is easier to just say Gwynn could increase run production.
Waiver Wire Starting Pitcher could improve run prevention next year.
Do I have the hang of it?
