We hinted this morning that there may have been a fourth finalist for the Mariners job not yet mentioned in the media as having participated in the first round of interviews.
Well, there was, and Larry Stone and I just confirmed that it's Jack Zduriencik, a heavyweight candidate from the Milwaukee Brewers.
So, the Final Four of Mariners GM candidates are Tony LaCava, Jerry DiPoto, Kim Ng and Zduriencik.

Then again, Pittsburgh didn’t want him, so it’s a little early to be concerned.
I was wondering about this for a while now: how does everyone feel about Jack Zduriencik? I mean, he’s done a great job of rebuilding our farm system, and it’s great we have him, but how badly do you want to keep him in the organization? Would you kick Melvin to the curb and install Z as GM, if that were the only way to prevent him from leaving?
I guess…I’m leery about assuming he’d be a fantastic GM. As good a job as he’s done with the draft, to be fair, he’s had a lot of high first-round picks to work with.
[Speaking of which, Rickie was a second overall pick in the 2003 draft, IIRC. Although it’s still possible he’ll figure things out and become an upper echelon player, at what point does one consider that Jack missed with this pick? Granted, at the time, Rickie and Delmon Young were heads and shoulders above everyone else. Still, others who went in the first round of the 2003 draft include Paul Maholm (2008: 3.71 ERA in 31 starts for the Rats), Nick Markakis (career OPS: .851), Conor Jackson (career OPS: .810), and Chad Cordero (career ERA: 2.78). If you could trade Rickie for any one of these players, would you? Granted, maybe the Brewers rushed him through the minors, maybe he’ll blossom into a great player, and the 1st round of that draft is littered with players I haven’t heard of. Still, at some point, it might be fair to call Weeks a bust as the second overall pick in 2003.]
I guess…remember 3 or 4 years ago, when Mike Maddux was considered a sooper genius for turning around pitchers like Doug Davis and that Turnbow character? I wonder if we aren’t overestimating Zduriencik as well. Although Melvin’s made some boneheaded decisions, I think he is an above-average GM, and I wouldn’t be quick to replace him with Zduriencik.

I think I would give Jack the GM job rather than see him leave.

I think this boils down to the Hardy/Escobar discussion
do you keep the guy that you know is a solid player/GM in his place (and let the new guy languish where he is), do you shift everyone around to give the boku position to the new guy on the block, or do you cast off the old guy and let the prospect player/GM take over completely without a safety net

I don't like the term "heavyweight".
That probably means he has a very good chance. Any idea when they are going to choose their new GM?

Is it Kosher
for GM jobs for the holding club to make a higher offer after-the-offer? In other words, if the Mariners offer him a job, can he play that off to the Brewers to get a raise? Or once he’s given an offer does he need to accept or decline the offer in a vacuum?

pretty sure that's fair game.
don’t know if it would matter, though.
I would imagine most FO types want nothing more than a shot at GMing. The guys who chose not to be interviewed (Forst, Hoyer, etc) are ones who will get better offers in cities other than Seattle. The offer that would keep JZ around would probably be more $$ + a comment like, “Doug’s leaving after next year. You’ll be first on our list.”
Also, cheese.

The M's are exactly the kind of team that really needs Jack Z.
A team that is looking like they will have a lot of top draft picks coming up. That said, I look at the list of candidates and it almost looks like the M’s got their act together and picked four people who I think would make at least a good GM. That is very un-M’s like…

the M's are weird.
If you take out the Bavasi signing and all of things he did, I don’t know if the M’s look that bad. Upper management might not have the right priorities (I gather they’re happy as long as the team is turning a profit, which isn’t hard to do in Seattle right now), but they aren’t cheapskates and you’d think they’d know by now the importance of hiring a good GM.
Not that Brewers fans need reminding, but it’s amazing how debilitating a bad GM can be.

just be glad
you weren’t wearing Bavasi’s glasses. Those would annihilate your judgment.

There's also the issue that...
the Mariners may be sold at some not-quite-determined point in the near future. Could make no difference at all, of course…

At least we got to keep him a year longer than I thought was likely.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.
