We all know the sign in the background there, it's the old Masterson Co. warehouse. Something that didn't start making me laugh until I thought about getting a particular prospect out of the Red Sox's hands.
Awhile back, not sure how many remember, but a Sox fan mentioned possibly doing a JJ for Masterson and Lowrie deal. Not only does that sound impossible now, but it's just silly.
Given the way they've used him later in the year, and how well he has pitched, what do you all make of Justin Masterson, and what would you think would get a deal made and sealed for him?
This, of course, just one of the pitchers I'm kind of high on, so if you'd like to mention any other young pitchers you'd shoot for, not named Kershaw or Clayton, I'm curious to see who else is on everyone's radar.
But they won't necessarily have an awesome sign like Masterson would in the Miller Park back drop ;)

Masterson's stats...
…are here.
He had a fine rookie season, but I’d want to know more about him before talking about trading JJ for him. JJ’s in an interesting spot: he’s one of the few players we can trade and have a credible in-house replacement for (in Escobar). We really wouldn’t need Lowrie (stats here) per se, though given the holes we DO have, I guess I’d be more inclined to get someone back who could address a future need.
So why are you so high on Masterson? What do you know about him?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

The Red Sox wouldn’t need JJ either. Lowrie is suiting their present needs; they need someone to take Julio Lugo and his albatross contract off their hands. (if they let Lowrie get blocked by Lugo someone is not thinking.)
The Brewers already have a Masterson-type swingman on the roster. Actually, they have two—Villanueva and McClung—who are both major league ready and able. Masterson seems like a nice, level-headed kid (unlike that Buchholz joker they keep sending down to AA,) but he probably needs to shake some of the suck out and learn some more pitchcraft at AAA in 2009.

To be honest...
I’d keep JJ, unless the trade was truly worth it. I think JJ showed what he was made of for the past 2 years. Just brought his name up from a post a bit back by a Sox fan. Though, seems like our main talking points of trades goes towards a JJ or Prince, otherwise a prospect like Alcides.
To me, I’d like a Masterson type in the rotation. I think he has a plus sinker and, generally, keeps the ball in the ballpark. I think his stats, in a sparse time in the Majors, show what he can bring to the table. Pretty good WHIP, and his K/BB ratio was fairly solid(which at his age, you’d think could improve).
So when I think about Masterson, in terms of a Brewers perspective, I’m thinking starter not the way he’s being used in this Playoff relief role(which he is doing well in currently). Just getting other opinions on the guy is all.
What are both of you looking for in the offseason IF we were to make a move?
