BCB Endorsement
For years, all we've heard about is how we need a change. The reasons are myriad: some fault the stubbornness of the administration, placing loyalty over competence. Others question how veterans are treated, or the cringe-inducing press conferences. To me, the most unforgiving fault has been the insistence to ignore the data on the ground in favor of going with a "gut decision," usually with the anticipated uninspiring results.
Regardless, the current regime has failed us over and over again, and it's time to go in a new direction. Right now, for the first time in years, we have a unique opportunity to have some say in new leadership. The air has become crisper, the leaves are changing color, and October is about to turn into November. With an eye toward 2009 and beyond, now is the time to let your voice be heard.
Now is the time for BCB to make an endorsement.
===================
We all know that Doug Melvin is a regular lurker here at BCB,* and that he values the judgment and baseball insight BCB posters have provided over the years.* Consider: BCB posters and commenters have demanded that Yost be fired, and Yost was fired. A lot of people saw in Sveum a continuation of Yost's poor decision-making, and Sveum was not returned as head coach.Yet now, in Doug's hour of need, we have all but abandoned him.
Whom do you want to take over as Brewer skipper for 2009?
I want names, people! If we don't come up with ideas for who we'd like to see running the team, Doug will have no choice but to go with someone else from the 1982 team. Is that what you want? Kevin Bass, with an OPS+ of -69? Do you want fans showering the field with Bob Skube Snacks every time we allow a go-ahead home run in the 9th inning because a reliever was left in too long?
Too much is at stake for us to remain silent.
Every time there's a managerial search in basbeall, there are are always some names that pop up that have the tag, "one of the brightest young minds in baseball," or some such nonsense. Yet, for the Brewers, all I'm hearing are old retreads, most of whom, let's face it, weren't very good at their last job. More to the point: in the scouting vs. sabermetrics debate, I think it's safe to say that this site leans toward sabermetrics. Do we want another coach to give lip service to statistical analysis? (Remember, Ned's read those books!)
So have at it: whom do you want to coach the team? Any particular reason why?
Your team needs you!

Honestly
I have no idea. All names mentioned are unappealing (I think I could withstand Macha or Randolph) and would much prefer a stat-minded up and comer. However, that’s not going to happen, so … as long as it is not Showalter, Brenly, or Little, I think I can get by.

What about Bobby Valentine?
Honestly, I don’t know a lot about different managers, but I’ve heard a lot of people praising him.
Would he be a good fit?

Please not Showalter
He showed nothing but disgust towards the Brewers when he was on Baseball Tonight throughout the year.

Plus, he sucks.

is Ned a "gut" guy or a "data" guy?
He routinely recited data to support his decisions. Some of his comments that could be read as going with his gut like the Parra came to him when he got up to take a leak were sarcasm I believe.
I think most of the time when people used data they are supporting something that is also an emotional or gut belief. You can have dueling data all day long, but how often do you hear people recite data without an opinion?
Having said that, I think Ned is a knucklehead who is wound too tight.

Davey Johnson quote
His prospects as Brewers manager are not overly promising. This is from July:
Q: If Omar Minaya called you after the Olympics and said, "Davey, we need you back, we need you to turn this thing around … "
DJ: First of all, it’s not going to happen. I respect Omar Minaya as a good general manager, but I haven’t had a working relationship with him … but as far as do I want to pursue a career in the big leagues again? No.

Buck Showalter
gets my halfhearted vote. Yeah I couldn’t stand him on Baseball Tonight any more than you guys could. But his reputation for micromanaging and OCD are a good fit for the youngsters on this team. Plate discipline and defense are the keys to improvement next year.
Bobby V is a guy I’d be happy to see get the job.
IMHO, if Moustache was looking for a winner I think he should’ve done a better job of placating Frank Kremblas, who’s been a winner everywhere he’s been. Good luck Frank, I hope you get a chance in the Show…

Hmm...
Didn’t the Rays just prove you can win with a new guy? So why do we have to go with one of these crappy retreads.

Two words...
Jerry Royster.

Maybe the front office looks at it this way
Maddon’s a guy who had a couple years to learn the ropes before this season. The Brewers don’t really have years to burn on a guy figuring out this managing thing — they’ve got the chance to win now and they want someone with winning experience to guide the team going forward after the guy they had learn on-the-job didn’t pan out.

What is more important in a manager
1) massaging the egos in the club house?
2) motivating the club house for 162+ games?
3) game decisions?
In my opinion #2 & 3 are the primaries. And in my opinion, the old re-treads are best @ #1 – avoid them.
The Brewers need a motivator and someone who will not have Brian Shouse Walk Ryan Howard and then have him pitch to a righty…
And no matter what – someone who is not associated with 1982.
Frank Kremblas would have been my first choice.

And yea, but anything I would say, would’ve been said… it’s cool though. I had something to say then, so I did. =)

Something tells me you’ll be editing that sig file soon as well. I was digging around a Venezuelan blog and saw a picture of Kremblas in Venezuela as well as Nick Leyva.
