Fall/Winter League Update for 10/24/2008
Tonight is the AFL All-Star game. The AFL returns to normal action on Saturday, when the Javelinas host the Saguaros.
By the way, Tom H. has an update from Arizona with the following injury notes:
- Jeremy Jeffress was diagnosed with shoulder fatigue but the team has decided he does not need to see a doctor. Are you serious? This guy is practically the only pitching prospect on the roster. If he says his shoulder hurts, he should see five doctors.
- Taylor Green is going to be fine following his broken nose and should play again any day now. Hopefully he saw a doctor.
- Angel Salome was diagnosed with rotator cuff irritation, which is why he hasn't played since October 8. It's unknown if he'll return to AFL action, but it seems doubtful.
In Venezuela:
- Alcides Escobar went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk for Lara.
- Also for Lara, Hernan Iribarren went 1-for-3, walked and was caught stealing.
- Brendan Katin busted out of his slump last night, going 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and his second VWL HR. Two of his three VWL hits are home runs.

remarkably you can get gameday of the Venezuelan league
I pop it open. Irribarren is playing center and has a couple singles. The Caracas Tigers I believe, are up. The Cardanales pitcher walks to load the bases, walks in a run and who comes to the plate but Matt LaPorta who has a HR and a walk so far.
Coaching visit to the mound and Reny Duarte strikes him out, inning over.
Say, could Irribarren be a potential major league center fielder?

.244/.297/.293/.590
His AAA MLEs in 369 ABs say no, no, no, and no. Utility guy, maybe, if he can improve a bit next year. A .674 OPS at AAA isn’t going to cut it.
I endorse Blengino.

315/373/419 is his line in the minors
He hit for the second highest average in Arizona League history. He’s been an all star at several levels. He’s hit well at every level except for AAA. He’s hitting lead off, playing CF and averaging a little under .300 in Venezuela right now.
Maybe he’s topped out at AAA, maybe the scouts have found a hole in his swing or maybe the switch to the OF has affected him.
I love HRs as much as anyone. I hope they find a way to keep Branyan on the team, but it doesn’t bother me to have players on the team who don’t hit them. Its like Kendall. You constantly read fan evaluations that use his OPS. I don’t think that slugging is as essential for a catcher, a CF or as a compliment to the rest of the Brewers lineup. The change of position thing never seemed reasonable to me, with Hall or anyone else, but maybe I’m wrong.
Regardless, his history to me says, maybe, maybe, maybe…
