World Series Game 5 Open Thread
We know Cole Hamels can handle the pressure, but can he handle this much pressure?
It's Hamels and Kazmir again, this time in Philly, this time with the whole series on the line. The Red Sox managed to win two games with their backs against the wall; can the Rays do the same?
Game time is "7:00" CT, and if by the third inning my ears are bleeding, don't call for help: that's normal.
Go Rays!
[UPDATE, 5:40 PM Weds] We resume play at 7:37 CT, game tied, Grant Balfour on the mound.

Gross weather
I bet Tampa Bay really wishes they were in their dome right now.

I wonder if the hit to the fingers of Hamels
as well as all that time on base will affect him

Drinkability
If this game were at Miller Park, would there be a Budweiser ‘Drinkability’ ad on the outfield wall?

Alright, through 4 1/2
Time to bring out the tarp, wait a couple hours, and call the game. :)

Hustle?
Why wasnt Baldelli on 2nd base when that pop-uo dropped?
by statsllc on Oct 27, 2008 8:58 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Baldelli's about the only player
That has a legitimate excuse when it comes to not hustling.

announcers
Buck and McCarver are so out of touch its ridiculous. Thats what happens when you use announcers who have only seen 30 games apiece in a season.

They explained the concept of the infield fly rule.
They should have two separate broadcasts- one called “The idiot channel”, which is watched by people who are observing their first baseball game. The action would be called by McCarver and Joe Morgan. The other channel would have a radio-style play by play guy calling the action, occasionally making observations/telling stories, and letting the crowd noise tell most of the story.
I endorse Blengino.

They should dredge up the French-speaking announcers the Expos used to have
Even if you don’t understand what they’re saying, it’d be more fun to listen to.

No infield fly?
Does the umpire have the ability to use his judgment and not call an infield fly during bad weather?
by oconnobe on Oct 27, 2008 9:20 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The "ordinary effort" part mucks it up
“An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule.”
I guess the dropped pop up earlier in the game made the umpires feel catching a pop up takes more than ordinary effort tonight.

Makes me think of Counsell. What was the game that he let one drop and got a double play?
by ol Pete on Oct 27, 2008 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
July 31 vs. the Cubs
Harden popped up a bunt (so it couldn’t be an infield fly anyway) and Counsell, seeing Harden not running, let it drop and threw to second for the force out and then it went on to first for the 5-6-4 double play.

that was nice
if you looked that up, thanks. Veteran-ness in action rather than concept.

Wouldn't it be weird (and sad)
for the World Series to end with a shortened game?

Now that it's tied
They have to call out the tarp, don’t they?

Yes
MLB is now off the hook. It may be Wednesday for the conclusion of this one.

so...if they would have called it with the phillies up 2-1 (after 5 complete)
would they have been required to declare the phillies the winners, or could they have suspended it? Do different rules apply in the playoffs than during the regular season?

I hope Matt Stairs is sent up to pinch hit for Hamels
What better way to follow political yammering than with an Australian facing a Canadian in America’s game?

wow Jenkins leading off
I guess I can see it. He hates off speed stuff and Balfour almost never throws any.

re-read that, and then read it again.
