Last-Minute Right Field Band-Aid?
Corey Hart is slumping. There are no signs it's getting better, and with him in the 6-hole, especially when Counsell is in the lineup, 6-7-8-9 reminds one of the Giants offense.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Do we bench the All-Star to try to jump-start a little offense? If so, who do we plug in there? The options on the NLDS roster are:
- Tony Gwynn: Great defense, similar OBP
- Brad Nelson: He's a lefty, so no way that happens tomorrow
- Weeks or Durham (with the other at second) -- no experience in the outfield, but both can hit
- Bill Hall: Wanna replace one slump with another?
- Mike Rivera: He'll make Pat Burrell look like a gazelle.
- CC Sabathia: Dude can mash.
Discuss.

While CC makes me think about it...
I vote for Weeks. His D might actually improve in the OF. At least it can’t get any worse, can it?

My vote
Let’s try and Akiel-ize Derrick Turnbow. That would be a sight to see!
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

I think we're better off
Do you remember that scene toward the end of the Blues Brothers when they arrive at the Richard J. Daley center and the Bluesmobile falls into pieces? (Of course you do.)
That’s pretty much the Brewers right now. Our #1 starter is out. Our #2 is making a probably ill-advised comeback from a torn ACL. We’ve had to run our rental ace on three days’ rest since the middle of September, and our superstar hitter has been fighting a bad back for more than a month. Plus we have some slumping players who can’t be sat for a day or two because we have no one who can fill in for them, for even a game. Heck, we’ve been giving Craig Counsell a lot of meaningful playing time. Craig Counsell!
I think we used every ounce of duct tape, luck, and grace from the baseball gods just to make it to the playoffs. Now that we’ve arrived at our own Richard J. Daley center, if we end up getting swept by losing tomorrow…I’m still pretty happy at how the season turned out.

I want a win to sooth the pain. But I agree with most of what you said. It has to be harder for the Cubs as they were pretty much crowned NL champions ever since the all star break. We should have won game 1, tanked in game two but at least were reasonably in it for awhile. Cubs have looked out matched in every aspect.
Here’s to hoping our beloved Crew can turn it around.

I don't think I will ever forget
that 1st pitch dribbler back to the pitcher in the 1st inning of yesterdays game. It’s one of those at bats that totally flops the momentum of the game.

Hart?
How about replacing Cameron? One of the guys here at work made the fine point that Cameron has been just as bad as Hart offensively, and his much vaunted defense has failed to come through in both playoff games. You can rag on Gwynn all you want, but he cannot be worse than Hart or Cameron.
That said, since it’s a lefty coming up, the lineup will not change.

gwynn in center
cam in right?

Absolutely not. That is absolutely ridiculous.

I am all for benching hart
But not the next game against Moyer. You can’t put a lefty in the lineup and none of the right handers are going to be better sadly.

Moyer?
Please. I’m fine if we have to bow out in the first round of the playoffs, but does it have to be Jamie Moyer who gives the death blow?

+1
Moyer seems like the worst possible pitcher for the way we’re swinging the bats right now. All junk and gritty cheese. It’s just more embarrassing to see them flail away at BP fastballs out of the zone.

Grit trumps youth
Give Hart a frickin’ day off. 612 ABs this year. He even looks like crap. He’s wasted carrying that frame around on the diamond six days a week for six months.
On second thought, after looking again at the options, I see we’re….screwed!

One more option
Kendall played outfield last year
Rivera to catch.
If Kendall wants to “game call” he can use sign language to convey his intentions.
That’d be comical. A pitcher looking into the outfield to get his signs then turning around and whizzing one in.

Well clearly that’s not a problem, considering Jeff suggested this Mike Rivera fellow. I didn’t know we could get new players during the post-season.
I think we all know exactly who the Brewers need right now, a player who can play the outfield, pinch hit, and has a great arm. I speak, of course, of Brooks Kieschnick.

No way weeks goes to right.
There is no way we put a guy in right for the first time all year in game three of the NLDS elimination game. If anything we’d see Gwynn out there – given that Sveum seems to like him a lot as seen by his recent pinch hitting roles. Even that won’t happen because of the lefties in the phillies lineup. Let’s just hope Hart finds a way to return to his first half form.

in Philly they are calling him the MVP of the Phillies for this series. Everyone was ready for Myers to fall apart in that first inning and then Corey steps into the box. Bench his ass for anyone.

So, if Corey had a problem with the hate before, he’s pretty much the scape goat (And Weeks) of this series. He’s going to hate life if he goes 0 – 4 with 2 GIDPs.
