Brantley completes Sabathia deal
Nothing really new here, I think it's been pretty clear for a while that Brantley would be selected as the PTBNL.
Haudricourt finally confirms.

Just about to post this

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

I think this is the best scenario for the Crew
The obvious hole in the organization is 3rd so I’m glad to see Green stay, hopefully he can continue to produce with the bat. If nothing gets done in the offseason regarding 3rd I’m not going to be surprised if Green is at Spring Training and then gets at least the late-season call-up.
I wonder if it would be easier for Gamel at 2nd, or are we just going to end up with Weeks Jr.? Just throwing out scenarios.
Time to update the Prospect List
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog

And at what point do we consider Gamel
in right field?

Never. He’d play left and Braun would be the one to move to RF or like some at BP want to CF.

Mat Gamel at 2nd?

If he doesn’t make it at third he’s going to the outfield.

We'll Be Rebuilding, that's for sure
Really sad over this trade. CC has been amazing, no doubt. But I think we’ll regret losing LaPorta instead of giving them Gamel. And Brantely to go with? Just gave up too much. Not like anyone knew he’d pitch the way he would, but we gave them too much. Imagine if his numbers stayed first half style and we lost all that. Eh, can’t cry over spilled milk I guess. Hope the both of them have great careers.
As for ‘09, swap Braun and Hart for the season. Braun’s got a cannon of an arm move him to RF, and Hart can play LF and then eventually move to CF around the time Gamel’s been a proven LF in Nashville. Then, start Jeffress, because we’ll need some one to throw a 102mph fastball to keep us entertained.
I speak for everyone when I say the offseason, between resignings, free agency, maybe even trades, is going to be really interesting and telling of what 2009 even is.

while I understand the sentiment
I’m still glad we made the trade. It’s been 26 years since we made the playoffs. My last memory of the Brewers in the post season was walking to my bedroom (7 year old) after the Brewers lost game 7. I said, rather innocently to my parents and not really understanding the nature of competition, “maybe they’ll let the Brewers join in the fun.” My mom looked at me and said, “We lost. There is no fun.” And now, those 26 years are over. Maybe we won’t advance any further, but at least we’re back. We also have a decent core of players (well, at least Braun, Gallardo, and Prince) that could make a run again next year (even in a rebuilding year) or 2-3 years from now.
So, we lost two prospects. Maybe they will both be great but maybe they will both suck. I for one am so stoked that we made the playoffs this year. Even if we lose, the joy, heartache, and excitement of getting here has been astoundingly awesome.

I think many of us will wish LaPorta was still a Brewer...
… in the years to come, but I don’t see how anyone can see the trade as a mistake regardless of what happens tomorrow or the rest of October. Eve if we lose tomorrow and you asked me after the game if I’d make the same deal knowing the outcome, I’d take it. As for giving them LaPorta rather than Gamel, do we know they would have taken Gamel in LaPorta’s place?
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Guys guys
Not calling it a bust trade. Saying we out did ourselves on the deal. But again, for all we know, perhaps the Indians GM pushed the right buttons in saying others were offering bigger tools that got these pieces together.
Darn happy we have CC. His numbers in a half season with the Crew are practically legendary. Really hope we can keep him for many years to come. He’d be a great ace to have, and a mentor to the younger pitchers we have set up for the next few years in our rotation.

You know who should be thankful for CC?
Ned Yost.
Without CC, we miss the playoffs, and his lifeless body would be hanging from Bernie’s Chalet right now.

I also hate to lose Brantley because of his unique skills and potential need for lefty leadoff man. However, the Brewers apparently think he can’t play center field adequately and we if he’s going to play a corner, he loses quite a bit of value and his bat becomes league average even with the awesome OBP.
I would hate to lose Green even more, though. This season at Brevard he almost beat Gamel’s 07 at Brevard, and he is a year younger than Gamel was when he played there. For all the love Brantley gets for being a great OBP guy, Green is right there with him- career minors, Brantley is .399 and Green is .382 even with his horrendous rookie league campaign. I wonder if Brantley is the poster child for OBP just because he doesn’t hit for much power. Green does, with 15 homers as a lefty in a park that we know is death for lefty power this year.
And that barely touches defense. We know that Brantley is not very good in center (even the Indians seem to know that, they have a pretty good CF right now) and we don’t have much of a need in left field or first base. He’d be a nice fallback for Corey Hart if he continues to suck, but….
Gamel probably will not stick at third. If he moves, it could be to the outfield; that leaves us with no 2nd basemen or 3rd basemen moving up the chain that are anywhere near the majors. Green can play both, and I understand that he’s very good at second and serviceable at third. Both are bigger needs in my opinion than a potential corner outfielder who doesn’t hit for power.
Thank you for your time.

Space Coast
It’s actually fairly generous to lefty power, but death to righty power. Jeff’s analysis.

Ok well um forgot about that
Gamel hit 11 there, Green hit 15, so though that was completely and utterly wrong, the comparison kinda works.
