Thursday's Frosty Mug
Some things to read while waiting for this machine to become commercially available.
So with the World Series over, one would expect the Brewers to announce their new manager any minute now. Add Drew Olson to the list of people expecting it to be Ken Macha.
After that, they'll have roughly a day to convince Mike Maddux to stay. The Brewers have denied permission for Maddux to interview with the Rangers regarding their pitching coach vacancy, but Maddux hasn't signed his contract for 2009 so on Friday he'll be free to talk to whoever he wants.
Also, the Brewers now have five days to determine the future of Mike Cameron. MLB Trade Rumors says he would be a Type B free agent, as will Eric Gagne, Brian Shouse and Salomon Torres. Gagne would almost certainly take arbitration if offered, but Shouse and Torres are anyone's guess.
Then, the Sabathia sweepstakes begins. Ken Rosenthal says the Brewers will throw $100 million at him. I don't think they'll throw it...they'll probably put it in a nice suitcase or something. Probably with wheels on the bottom, because I'd guess $100 million is heavy.
The Brewers have already gotten a head start on resolving the third base situation, claiming Casey McGehee off waivers from the Cubs (as noted in the FanShots). Joe Dillon was DFA'd to make room for him, but could still return on a minor league deal...or head to Japan. McGehee probably isn't the answer, but he's one more answer to try.
Speaking of potential answers at third base, Mat Gamel won an award for consistency yesterday. Apparently they haven't watched him in the field. (Also noted in the Fanshots).
That's all I've got for today, but I figured a short Mug would give you plenty of time to invest in the 401 Keg retirement plan.
Drink up.

maddux
something I never thought about until reading the comments in the jsblog, who knew I could learn something there shudders but leo mazzone is available as a pitching coach.
would he be an upgrade over maddux?
I untuck my shirt!
Man oh man
The Yankees have 5 Type A free agents. How nice for them.
Oh, and it seems the Nationals went ahead and lined up their coaching for 2009 without waiting for Willie Randolph. C’mon, Doug - if the Nationals pass, are you really considering Randolph? Assuming he’s not our manager next season, he’ll probably go to Colorado as bench coach.

He's owed $2 mil by the Mets next year
and I think he said it’s a managing job or nothing. That would make sense, why not just sit on the $2 mil and take a break?
I endorse Blengino.
Actually...
The Mets owe him $2+ million if he doesn’t manage next season. I’m not sure if he’d get that if he took a job as a bench coach. So it’s possible sitting at home could be more profitable than working for Randolph.
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
Randolph turned them down
He cited the fact he doesn’t have a great relationship with Manny Acta as a reason.

which is weird...
because you’d think Acta would have a pretty big say in choosing who to offer the bench coach job to.
Also, cheese.

Hard to have a good relationship
with a computer like M.A.N. eACTA (Mechanized Algorithmic Numerical (internet-ready) Actionable Computation Techno-Automaton).
I endorse Blengino.
you lazy bum
click on the link, because I’m too lazy to look again. Abreu is one, though. I think I-Rod is one too.

Whoops. Forgot it was a mug. Of course there's a link, haha.
I think maybe two or three of those guys accept arbitration, though, if the Yankees offer it.

Gamel's award
Can anyone explain how Gamel won an award for baseball writing? The J.G Taylor Spink award is for writers, not players. At least according to every baseball website I can find.
There's two of them
The writers one is given out by the BBWAA and the player one (far less known) is given out by TOPPS and Minor League Baseball.

Type B's
Do we have to offer arbitration to gagne to get the draft pick? And what about cameron? Can we just decline his offer and get the picks?
And type B’s net you second rounders right?
And what happens if say the Yankees sign both Sheets and CC – They only have one 1st round pick… how do we get both of their 1st rounders in that case?
I am confused [and no it doesn’t take much]

Draft picks
Unless a Type A/B free agent is signed before December 1, you have to offer arbitration to get picks for him. If the player is signed before December 1, you get the compensation pick(s) without having to offer arbitration. Losing a Type B free agent gives you a pick between the first and second round. The order of that special in-between round is as follows: teams that lost a Type A free agent go first in reverse order of their W-L% in the previous season, and then teams that lost a Type B free agent go in reverse order of W-L%.
If a team signs more than one Type A free agent, the former club of the guy with the higher score according to the Elias rankings would get the signing team’s first round pick and a pick between the first and second round. The former club of the other free agent would get the signing team’s next draft pick (in the second round – you can’t lose compensatory picks) as well as the one between the first and second round, and so on.

Macha as manager
Buster Olney from ESPN.com is reporting Macha will be announced Brewer’s manager.
Brewers Press Conference, 2pm CT
Announcing Ken Macha as the new manager:
The Brewers decided on Macha as their choice as early as Sunday and were waiting for the World Series to end to make the formal announcement. The Phillies did the Brewers a favor by winning the championship on Wednesday night; had the Series shifted back to Tampa Bay, the Brewers were considering asking Major League Baseball to waive the moratorium on making news so they could name Macha on Thursday. Melvin leaves town for the Managers Meetings on Saturday and wanted the staff settled before then.
The Brewers also were expected to make some announcements Thursday about the coaching staff. Sveum could be back as third-base or bench coach, and Melvin also encouraged Macha to retain pitching coach Mike Maddux, bullpen coach Bill Castro and first-base coach Ed Sedar.
Hopefully this isn’t like injuries where we’ll hear a rosy story today and find out the real damage on Tuesday. :)

Hmmmmmm
and Melvin also encouraged Macha to retain pitching coach Mike Maddux, bullpen coach Bill Castro and first-base coach Ed Sedar.
Are Bill Castro and Ed Sedar that valuable that Moustache wants to retain them?

Sedar, I don't know
but back when everybody was always giving glowing praise to Maddux, a decent share of that praise went to Castro as well. The bullpen guys seem to love him.
Also, cheese.

Personally
I always thought Sedar was kind of wooden.
But maybe that’s just me.
