Brewers to name Macha manager | brewers.com: News
I was waiting for it to become a little more official, but once McCalvy reports it, we can be pretty sure it's legit.
Of the three finalists, Macha is by far my favorite. We may have been able to do better, but if we're choosing only from experienced big-league managers with recent success, there aren't many guys I'd rather have.

Agreed
The biggest news will be if they announce the other new members of the staff. Considering they were so anxious to announce this, I would have to think that the coaching staff is relatively set.
I endorse Blengino.
Heh

In other words, Jeff is a Macha Macha man. He wants to be…a Macha man!

So, Beane cited a disconnect as the reason Macha no longer had his services being required.
So, um, what would that be?
I guess what I’m saying is if I need to prepare for another year of meaningful Jason Kendall at bats, hit and runs, small ball with a non small ball team and generally terrible lineups, well, I’d like a head start.
From what I have been hearing (IIRC):
Macha doesn’t play backup catchers that much, so don’t expect to see a ton more of Rivera (or whomever) over Kendall. However, Macha also plays to his teams/players strengths. For instance; we hit for power a lot so that is what he is going to play for, not a lot of small ball. I’m hopeful that also means we will see more of Weeks’ speed on the basepaths as well.
Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9
If this is true, then ok with this decision, I am.
I mean, Kendall eventually has to play himself out of the lineup, right?
only when his knees give out
And, I think knee replacement surgery and catching a game the next day is entirely possible for someone as gritty as Kendall…

Kendall doesn't have knees
He has [insert grit-related punchline].

I was hoping the Brewers might make a bit of a bigger splash,
A la the Cubs signing Lou Piniella. I was rooting for us to go after Bobby Valentine.
But out of the three candidates, I agree with Jeff that Macha is by far my favorite.

He has a Degree in Civil Engineering: What does that mean?
1. He’s awesome
2. He’s really smart
3. He’s good with numbers
Go Macha!
He's an upgrade over Ned?
Ned: Building Computers, synching his IPhone
Macha: Civil Engineering – such an advanced and complicated profession I don’t even know what it is.
Advantage Macha.

He'll design the Road
to take us to the playoffs.
And then he’ll design the skyscraper to take us to the top!

FWIW, you forgot taxidermy as one of Ned's strengths
Which further increases the advantage for Macha.

Some Macha tidbits
I follow the Brewers and my fantasy league is all NL, so these are just things I pulled from old Baseball Prospectus books (as opposed to any observations)
1st or 2nd every year with the Athletics.
Team typically won more games than expected via the Pythag. +/-
Communicating with players was reportedly an issue.
Considered a strong tactical manager.
Didn’t run a lot, but good percentage base stealers.
Not a big bunter.
Typically very patient with players. Not a snap-move/reactionary guy.
Handled/developed pitching well
Macha looked like he was wearing a straightjacket in the press conference
and I was suddenly struck by how much Melvin looks like a cop
haha
He’s about as serious and dry as a cop too, but that’s what I like about him. He’s all baseball all the time.
Looking at the picture on the JSonline site… Did they temporarily give him #4?
We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!
#40
He prefers #39 but Capuano is still on the roster for now.

Speaking of Capuano
Is he likely to be able to play next year and if so when?
Because if there is any way he could pitch like he did 2-3 years ago it would a big difference to the starting pitching, we may only need 1 FA signing rather than 2

Melvin has to stop with the n’ that’s. it is beyond a midwest accent and makes us all sound like dufusses. It is really bad. n’ that. or whatever he says. n’ that. And I don’t even live there.
