First Five Free Agents File
Eric Gagne, Gabe Kapler, Mike Lamb, Ben Sheets, and Brian Shouse filed for free agency today. The rest of the Brewers' potential free agents have two more weeks to file.
The linked article talks about offers to Sabathia, Sheets, and Shouse.

his agent makes it quite unlikely that he'd be affordable.

Scott Boras Logic 101
“Did my client play last year? What was his batting average? Then move the decimal back two spaces and making it MILLION DOLLARS instead of AVG and give him that per year! Oh, what’s that? He pitched? Then it’s simple, take his ERA, move the decimal to the right, and replace ERA with Millions of Monies!”

MLB.com has comments underneath their articles now!
New batch of fun. This marks the final time I ever read anything below an MLB.com article, but this is awesome:
IF THE BREWERS ARE REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT GOING TO THE POST SEASON IN 2009…They have to do the following;
1) Trade Sheets or let him go in free agency….he’s a slacker
2) Trade Ricky “Strikeout, bobble the ball” Weeks
3) Trade Sabathia —Come on, do you really think he will be back in 2009?? Be Real !! Wake Up !!!
4) Trade “Fat Albert , I’ll pay you on Wednesday for a Hamburger today” Fielder
5) Trade “Cappy” the want to be twice Tommy John shoulder injury
AND…Bring Back Jeoff Jenkins as the Third Base Coach in 2009….
Earlier last year I said we should have traded for Shields (Pitcher for Tampa), but everyone thought I was nuts, but look where he wound up….

I like the idea of trading free agents
Can we trade Mark Teixeira to someone?

What good would Jeoff be at third base?
Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9

I like the following
Shouse and Kapler
i guess when they file, they’re not really going to deal internally.
What’s Lamb got going for him? Why bother filing? I don’t know if he’d have more value to another team than as a brewers bench player. And Kapler…didn’t he retire once? why file for free agency rather than a) retire again or b) resign with the Brewers for about the same as you did last time around?

Kapler may want to see if the Red Sox want him. The Sox really didn’t have a place for him in 2008, but who knows for ’09?

Is that another mlb.com comment?
I wish people could understand that filing for free agency is a formality to keep options open. It doesn’t say anything about the intention (or lack thereof) of a player to negotiate with his former team. Even if it doesn’t seem like there will be interest around the league, it’s better to file and have potentially 30 suitors than to not file and wait for your team to renew your contract at the salary they set (granted with restrictions over pay cuts).

i dunno...isn't loyalty sometimes rewarded?
as in “if you don’t file, we’ll offer you more than if you do file”

When do eligible players not file for free agency?
They might not do it on the first day and it might not be reported if they sign a new deal quickly, but I believe they still file for free agency. Otherwise they’d just have to hope the team wasn’t lying through their teeth about rewarding loyalty.
What’s the incentive for the team to try and prevent their guys from filing anyway? I guess to avoid a player’s price tag from rising too much due to offers from other teams, but there’s already an exclusive negotiating window for former clubs.
