Fall/Winter League Update for 10/31/2008

In Arizona: Lorenzo Cain got his first start at DH and went 1-for-3, Alexandre Periard got his first start and gave up six runs on six hits and two walks in 1.2 innings, and David Welch pitched a perfect inning in relief (on 6 pitches) as the Javelinas lost to Phoenix again, 7-1.

The Javelinas travel to Mesa at 2:35 today.

In Hawai'i: Caleb Gindl went 0-for-2 with a walk as the CaneFires lost to North Shore for the second straight day, 6-3 in 7 innings.

The CaneFires host Waikiki tonight at midnight.

In Mexico: Erasmo Ramirez pitched a full inning last night for only the third time in eight appearances for Guasave, but gave up two runs on three hits.

In Venezuela:
  • Jay Gibbons went 1-for-2 with two walks and a 3 run home run (his fourth) for Magallanes.
  • Also for Magallanes, Tony Gwynn went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored 3 times.
  • Hernan Iribarren went 0-for-3 with a walk and scored a run for Lara, ending his 9 game hittings streak.
  • Brendan Katin went 1-for-4 with a solo home run for Zulia, his fifth home run in seven games.
In the Dominican Republic: It appears the box scores have fallen a day behind again. Here are results from Wednesday:

Looking at Spanish pages that follow the Venezuelan leagues I sometimes let google translate a page if Brewers are mentioned. A lot of the time it doesn’t help much. Check out this paragraph about the Magellan Navigators:

After suffering on Thursday its first bleached of the season, Magellan came with a desire to get even with anyone and it was the turn of Caribs. In the first episode, the electrical and opened the faucet rose for the safe home on five occasions. The change in the line up marked difference. Elvis Andrus Jr. and Tony Gwyn. returned to the first and second turn to bat and with this decision of manager Nick Leiva returned effectiveness in the attack. Estacazo the most spectacular stretch of what Jay Gibbons shot that flew above the blackboard garden right of the stadium “Jose Bernardo Perez.”

I don't know if it would be any better

But I use this site sometimes: http://www.freetranslation.com/

At least the gist of that paragraph gets across: Magellan was shut out, so they were out for revenge. They got five runs in the first inning because Elvis Andrus and Tony Gwynn were in the top two spots of the lineup. Good job, Nick Leyva! Jay Gibbons hit a home run.

How quickly we forget

I saw Nick Leyva’s name and thought, “oh, that name sounds familar,” like maybe he was a coach from the 90’s.

Turns out he coached third in 2007. Oops.

I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
