Keep Your Head Held High or How I Learned to Get Yesterday's Game Off My Mind and Love the 2008 Brewers)
To be honest, I was a bit down yesterday after the game (the Packers and the Badgers didn't help much either). But this morning, I woke up, took a shower, and put on my favorite Brewers shirt with a smile. Why?
- Because of Ryan Braun's home run in St. Louis followed by Torres icing the sweep.
- Because I finally kept a New Years Resolution, to make it to five Brewers games, and they won all five.
- Because One of those was C.C.'s first in Milwaukee.
- Because it's now only been one day since the Brewers have been in the playoffs, and for the Cubs it's been two.
- Because of J.J.'s defense in the Cubs series when everything else was cover your eyes awful.
- Because I'm pretty sure my sister was crying when she told me Ryan Braun hit a three run homer on the last day of the season.
- Because I sat watching Gameday in suspence and anticipation for a Mets-Marlins game.
- Because Prince Fielder flat out mashed the last home run of the season.
- Because we got to see Dave Bush come up huge in game three after being jerked around by Ned Yost.
- Because I had a reason to call Craig Counsell C.C. Jr.
- Because of the thought of Craig Counsell trying on Prince Fielder's uniform.
- Because out of nowhere, Russell Branyan carried this team.
- Because of the number 3 million.
- Because of the number 90 million.
- Because at the end of the day, if all signs point to a job well done, I will untuck my shirt.
Thanks for 2008, now make 2009 even better.

And let us not forget

Through the eyes of a 5-year-old
As only a kid can make you appreciate the game, my personal highlights, in chronological order:
1. At spring training, asking me every 5 minutes, “Daddy, where’s Ryan Braun now?”
2. June 20. Watching Bernie slide during his (and my) first game at Miller Park. Asking me every 10 minutes, “Where’s Ryan Braun? Where’s Prince Fielder? Is dat Corey Hart?” Unfortunately, the Brewers didn’t win the game. Like most of the games I used to attend at County Stadium.
3. Cheering for whichever sausage was winning the race. Kids are born bandwagon fans.
4. Getting out of bed and running downstairs in his pajamas to see Braun’s walk-off Slam.
5. Three days later, cheering with me as the Brewers made the playoffs for the first time since I wasn’t all that much older than he is now.

Where did you end up?
Brew Angel,
I think you asked earlier this spring about where to sit with your young son at the June 20 Brewers game. I replied and told you to sit in section 109. Where did you end up?

I took your advice
(almost). I got tickets in section 107. We were on the right-field side, field level, right in front of the kids’ playground area. My son had a blast! I just missed catching one of the warmup balls that Hart threw into the seats, too.
I wound up getting to see the Brewers live 3 times this year. Spring training, at Miller Park, and against the Dodgers. I don’t know when I’ll make it back to WI for another Brewers game, but I plan to see them in spring training again next March (a trip I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to any baseball fan — the small venues, relaxed atmosphere, and up-close interaction with players is not to be missed!), and hopefully against the Dodgers or Padres too.

36) Because of the horrified look on the father of two young children’s face when our section broke out with a “Hermida has herpes” chant.

Classic
I was around 12 sitting in the bleachers at County Stadium when a couple of guys who had a little too much to drink started a “Daryle Ward beats his wife” chant. Although, at that age, I thought it was funny. He didn’t come back out the next inning, though he was probably replaced for a defensive upgrade.
